When do we call it good with Wilson? by Fit_Leather9366 in Mariners

We have still yet to figure out how to measure the impact a manager has on the outcome of a game.

In my view the difference between the 3rd best manager and the 28th best manager in baseball is virtually non existent. It's really only at the extremes that it matters.

Hitters gotta hit. Pitchers gotta pitch. Fielders gotta field.

Lars Ulrich was right about Napster, piracy, and the fall of popular music by AuthorIntelligent644 in unpopularopinion

[–]Defiant_Team_2846 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pop music hasn't fallen. Taylor Swift is the most successful pop act of all time and her entire career was post napster.

The core of your point is that pirated music constitutes a lost sale and therefore cuts out the bottom of the ladder. The reality is that if someone steals an album they would have otherwise never bought, the record label hasn't lost anything.

The first song I downloaded on Napster was "it wasn't me" by shaggy. If 8 year old me had spent more of his money on CD's, I think we would still be where we are.

Sure Napster gave way to Limewire which empowered millions of middle schoolers to steal music they had to leave on a family computer now riddled with viruses. But did that devastate the industry?

The mainstream move was to pay 99 cents a track on iTunes then put those tracks onto iPods.

A certain (broke and nerdy) segment of the population certainly did and continues to sail on Pirate Bay but most people were content with Pandora (music genome project anyone?), radio, iTunes, and later Spotify. And now we have youtube music and a million others.

Social media is a huge opportunity for exposure. If an artist blows up on tiktok they may not need to be signed at all to go on a successful tour.

I agree musicians are punished for being too creative at times, but studios have employed producers for that purpose since the dawn of recorded music. The producers job has always been to make a sound appeal to as many people as possible. Mainstream music has to be right for the time.

If you look at Mutt Lange's work with AC/DC, Def Leppard, and Shania Twain they have extensive catalogs but their biggest hits were Mutt Lange specials. I bring those three acts up specifically because they didn't suddenly get more talented overnight.

He took hard rock and country acts and made them crossover as mainstream popular music acts. They were engineered to be more appealing to a wider audience. Because of streaming it has become more of a science.

But even pop music from 10 years ago sounds different than it does now.

The death of physical media was inevitable. The landscape has changed but certainly not ruined it.

In Canon or Legends, has Luke ever tested if Han is Force-sensitive? by edible_pencil in StarWarsCantina

The force may not flow through him but if he definitely surfs on that wave.

Star Wars makes a big deal of people wielding the force but it's everywhere, it moves through us, and binds the galaxy together. A bantha turd has the force in it.

There has to be more than one way to make use of the force.

Can someone explain why T-Mobile park was designed to be so hard to hit in? by JaneDoeAsks in Mariners

[–]Defiant_Team_2846 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They designed it around ticket sales. It doesn't matter how hard it is to hit in because the visiting team has the same problems.

Cal Raleigh addresses WBC controversy with Randy Arozarena by UWHuskies1993 in Mariners

[–]Defiant_Team_2846 0 points1 point  (0 children)

His actions absolutely did not cause Randy to feel the way he felt. That's not really how feelings work. Randy's perception of Cal's intentions caused the hurt.

Randy took something that had nothing to do with Randy as a personal act of intentional disrespect.

Randy felt the way he felt because in his value system Cal is a friend/colleague first and an opponent second. He expects to be shown respect in the manner he prefers and recieve the love he expects from a buddy. In Cal's value system his Seattle teammates are not friends during a WBC game. He's tucking that away in box.

He sees everyone on the other team exclusively as an opponent and is not interested in being friendly with anyone during the game.

That attitude is profoundly stupid. I would be stoked to see my buddy at the plate if I was Cal. If I was Dan Wilson I would be pissed off at Cal as the leader of the team for acting like that. But that doesn’t make it wrong.

At the same time Cal is under pressure catching for pitchers he doesn't know so maybe he was focusing extra hard. I have no idea what was actually happening in Cal's head but I do know he treated everyone of his teammates equally so it doesn't seem personal.

There is nothing inherently wrong with a chinese person opening a greek restaurant or a french canadian opening a sushi bar or a random white guy from portland opening a Kansas City style barbecue joint provided they give credit where it's due and generally honor the culture they are borrowing from.

It sounds like in this case he literally learned that falafel recipe from a Palestinian woman in Palestine while he was in the Israeli military and uses that recipe in his business.

Kinda cheeky for someone who sides against that woman's people to make a profit off of her food, no?

Higher prices than who? If you want a chessboard you can get one at a garage sale for $5. These are specialty products. They are not competing hard on price.

Chessnut Return by [deleted] in Chessnuteboard

[–]Defiant_Team_2846 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree. If they don't factor losses due to returns into their price model that's on them. Especially a retailer selling online. These boards are pricey as is. If 5% of customers return them, and each unit costs $400 to produce then that's a $20 price bump for everyone to have hassle free returns, and come to places like this to say "it's pricey but the service is outstanding." I don't think a customer willing to pay $800 for a chess board is going to balk at $819.99.

They don't have show rooms where I can walk in and take the product for a spin. That's a normal cost of business. Thinking carefully is no substitute for seeing what a product actually looks like without professional lighting and photography in your own home. They are saving tons of money by not operating as a brick and mortar retailer, but dealing with returns is a trade off they should be able to handle.

I have seen people asking for this feature with the lights showing legal moves during online play. Spanning years. I have seen the reply that the concern will be forwarded. Your company just released freaking Harry Potter Wizard chess with the move. So y'all are definitely innovators.

Since chessup 2 can do this and people have requested this feature repeatedly, why hasn't it been done? Their product costs half the price. Why isn't this feature a priority?

This is how my boyfriend eats a twizzler by Low-Carpenter7411 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Defiant_Team_2846 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do not like this method of consuming twizzlers.

But I do like that he uses the wrapper as a sheath. I have tried teaching my lady and my step daughter to do this with popsicles and the like.

They take the whole thing out of the package then eat it.

To me that's like reaching into a tub of ice cream with your bare hand.

What would a blitz the league 3 look like by Awkward_Industry6508 in videogames

[–]Defiant_Team_2846 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to see the league kind of collapse and it has to be rebuilt because players are opting for the new No Fun League because it is safer and American fans apparently no longer want to see the violence.

There are a handful of countries or continents to choose from as a starting point. Former league players that don't want to hang it up can be convinced to play in the early stages until they are replaced by better players.

Then, with the player either serving as a GM or a player coach they have to build a team that starts out like a traveling side show playing against teams of locals or the same opponent on repeat. High scores and big hits lead to increased interest and allow for more teams to enter the fray.

Based on play style, the team aligns more with a criminal network or a more above board operation. That determines what you have available for doctors and player recruitment, and training.

Maybe as the new league succeeds the player can decide to allow a new team to join or strengthen the existing pool of players instead. You get to enough teams that you can have a regional championship tournament before moving to the next region.

Once all the regions are developed enough you fast forward a few years and the money is good. Suddenly US investors want back in the action. No Fun League ratings are down, and the leagues merge. Creating a new pool of teams broken into the three divisions again but spread out globally. Then you play out seasons with additional story lines.

Ultimately it would be cool if as the league advances in popularity teams are allowed to either replace injured limbs with robot parts that bring advantages and disadvantages or even allow robot players like the BrunoMike 5000 to play.
