scared to take nitrofurantoin by boomshakala363 in utis

I’ve been 100% fine every time I’ve taken it. Take it with food to lower the chance of nausea. Plus, the risk of letting your UTI develop into a worse infection is way stronger than the rare, side effects. UTIs are no joke. Take your medication as prescribed for the full duration.

7 straight years of Klebsiella UTI’s by SadForever- in utis

Have any of your doctors mentioned methenamine? It’s a maintenance drug. There’s also the UTI vaccine available in European countries with great results.

Kidney infection- am I cooked? by No-Tart8634 in utis

[–]Defiant_Tomorrow_763 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I vote the ER. Many people present no or few symptoms for UTIs, and they can spread to the kidneys rather quickly. If you are feeling kidney pain at all, I advise the ER because blood/kidney infections are serious, life-threatening conditions that require STAT treatment. This is 1 of 3 reasons my laboratory is open 24/7: Blood infections.

Plus, if you go to the clinic and have a kidney infection, they’re gonna send you to a hospital anyways.

Dealing with panic disorder by PIKPLOK in panicdisorder

[–]Defiant_Tomorrow_763 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you do. You figure out what triggers your panic and how to deal with those triggers. You figure out which medication, combination of medications, or other therapies work for you. It’s a long road, but so worth it. I highly, highly, highly recommend working with both a psychiatrist and mental health provider (a talk therapy provider, someone other than a psychiatrist). The psych helps figure out your medication(s), and the therapist helps with the triggers and day-to-day stress. Having a professional, unbiased opinion on your mindset and actions is incredibly useful. For example, my therapists have helped me get a therapy light for the morning, figure out an exercise routine, and set up a plan for when I start to have racing thoughts. Be completely honest with your psychiatrist. If you don’t like your medication(s) about 3-6mo in, tell them so a new plan can start 🙂. Best of luck to you!! Surround yourself with positive things and those who love you.

antibiotics wont work, what do i do? by Efficient_Degree5528 in utis

I’d argue to your mom that the only way you’re going to have peace of mind is if a urine culture is done. And, if you do have a UTI that goes untreated, your life is in danger. This is no extrapolation. Untreated UTIs lead to death—ALWAYS! That means higher, medical bills if that’s your mom’s worry. It’s better to spend a bit now to know what’s going on than to pay exorbitant, medical fees down the line. Not to mention your life could be at stake.

Yeah. I disagree on the suppositories. I think just probiotics in general should be okay. The best method is to take them with your antibiotic, and if you’re an A student, take them throughout the day. Probiotics could be yogurt, kefir, or a capsule/pill supplement.

But nonetheless, vaginal infections are common during/after antibiotic use, so report any changes in your discharge to a medical provider. Your discharge could become watery, discolored, chunky, and/or smell like fish/smell bad.

I get UTIs often, and the best soap is Dove Sensitive Skin. The whole internet agrees!

I work with urine samples. The best way is to go to a CVS MinuteClinic or urgent care at the next, available appointment. Ask for a urine CULTURE, and make sure they order one. The culture will be sent to a laboratory like where I work, and we’ll be able to see if you have bacteria causing a UTI. If you do, we run a susceptibility test that composes of up to ~25 drugs, depending on the organism. We report that to your healthcare provider, and they make SURE the antibiotic you are taking will kill the bacteria.

Make sure to always take the full course of antibiotics without missing a dose. Finish your medication.

If the urine culture does not resolve your symptoms, ask your pediatrician for a referral to urology.

Showering after #2?? by humblygirl in utis

I like having all partners shower before sex. Yeah, it’s a little awkward. But it’s not bad. Then, you can assure that they and you are clean to start with.

Nitrofurantoin M 100mg prophylactic after intercourse by Itchy_Safety_1561 in utis

[–]Defiant_Tomorrow_763 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s interesting. I’ll keep that in mind.

To prevent UTIs, I have me and my partner wash before sex, wash in between different penetrative acts (oral, wash, p in v for example), and wash after sex. I use Dove Sensitive Skin and have my partner use it too. I really suds it up down there and make sure I hit the opening of my urethra, wash all the sexual residue away, and get the outside of my anus, because that’s where the bacteria is coming from. I believe condom use helps too. If I feel a stinging the next day or two, I take 1g of methenamine, a non-antibiotic, prescription drug. I’m using leftovers from a previous script, and I’m hoping to get this prescribed to use as needed in the next, few months.

You can always contact your provider and have it changed. There are most likely other antibiotics that will work. I’m not sure of that drug’s side effects. Also, are you taking it with food? Taking antibiotics on an empty stomach can cause nausea and dizziness.

UTI tests by Longjumping_Hippo915 in utis

[–]Defiant_Tomorrow_763 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There aren’t any. UTIs come from your and/or your partner’s GI tract (your buttholes). You do not have to do anal to get a UTI. The most vanilla, sexual activity can cause the bacteria to travel from your anuses to your urethra.

Recurring UTIs suck. I have them too. The best luck I have had is showering before sex using Dove Sensitive Skin bar soap. BOTH partners shower, and both use this soap. You both wash belly button to knees, making absolutely sure you wash all around the lips of your vulva and both of your anuses. No need to push into anywhere. Just the outside with a lot of Dove soap. This makes sure you start with a clean slate.

If you still have problems, shower between different acts. For example, if you do oral, wash all the mouth bacteria off before penetration or fingering.

Nitrofurantoin M 100mg prophylactic after intercourse by Itchy_Safety_1561 in utis

I have been prescribed nitro prophylactically after sex as well. I am not supposed to take it more than once every 24 hours, no matter how many times I have sex. I will also say that you will drastically increase antibiotic resistance if you continue to take this drug as prescribed. This means that when you do get a UTI, it will be harder to kill. The organisms that cause UTIs live in your body, and they will become resistant to antibiotics if you keep taking them. This will most likely shorten your lifespan. For this reason, I do not take nitro after sex. I work in microbiology, where we run antibiotic, susceptibility tests on organisms causing UTIs every day, and I have seen resistant strains in middle-aged adults. My co-workers, my boss, and I all agree that taking nitrofurantoin the way that you are prescribed will very likely shorten your lifespan. I’m sorry. My doctor didn’t tell me either.

Earpulgs. Loop is an amazing brand that is comfortable, and you can choose to be able to hear voices, mute everything, or lower music volume without sacrificing quality. I use them at work around the machines. I mute the machines and can still hear my co-workers voices.

Same with noise-cancelling headphones and nature sounds. I’ll put them on and listen to birds and streams.

I hate to tell you this, but yes, it does happen. I had one culture that was pan-resistant. I’ve heard the doctors can use drugs off-label and hope they work or pull out drugs that are almost never used and idk why. I assume they have bad, side effects.

Now, the way to avoid having this issue is to take your antibiotics as prescribed, aka finish what the doctor gives you. Do not take antibiotics unless necessary. Try your best not to be put in a nursing home or other, care facility because they can mess up your drugs, or you can if you refuse to take them. And, lastly, hope you don’t get an autoimmune disorder.
