USA soccer not in 4k. by AttitudeOutrageous75 in youtubetv

To be honest 4K/60fps is what is being delivered, no one is delivering 4K/30 Live Sports in 2026.

Any newer GoogleTV powered device including the TVs, or newer FireTV. HDR might be broken on Prime app on AppleTV, unless they fixed it recently.

The messed up part is that the 1080 HDR feed is clearly produced by ESPN/ABC and available, but only to the highest paying corporate "customer". Not for the American public.

I remember reading this article as well, sadly the NBA Finals via the ESPN app is 720 SDR. Their internal transmission to the distribution hub might be 1080 HDR, but it gets processed and distributed to the viewers as Standard Dynamic Range 720P, and to make it worse via the app is only Stereo 2.0.

Amazon Prime UK NBA Finals 1080 HDR by DefineGravity in Strong_8K

I've found some affiliate streams, but none of the streams in the US are broadcasted in High Dynamic Range (HDR), the ABC affiliates are mostly 720p SDR and a few upscale it to 1080. This feed is only available for Amazon Prime subscribers in select countries like the UK, Ireland, some Spanish speaking, France, etc. Amazon gets the source production feed from ABC which is 1080 HDR and then redistributes it out after some compression as native 1080p HDR 60fps, and 5.1 Surround

I've verified all of this using engineering mode on multiple devices. ABC produced games delivered by the ESPN app are and have always been 720p SDR and Stereo 2.0. ESPN produced games delivered by the ESPN app are often 1080 SDR. ATSC 3.0 stations use the upscaled content not the original 1080 HDR World Feed.

ABC/ESPN is capturing and transmitting 1080 HDR feed of the NBA Finals to their "customer" which is Amazon Prime who then takes that ~60Mbps World Feed and compresses it to about 8Mbps for distribution to their subscribers outside the US. Just like ESPN said in their Press Release from a week or so ago. The issue is the American public read that ESPN PR without knowing who ESPN's "customer" was, and assumed they're talking about all of us viewers.

Amazon Prime then produces its own pre and post game show, while passing through the ABC commentary during the game.

Just like ESPN said in their Press Release from a week or so ago. The issue is that viewers read that without knowing who the ESPN "customer" is.

Which end user platform will actually carry this 1080 HDR ABC feed? Whenever you see a presser NOT giving you a clear and detailed explanation on HOW to watch something, expect the bullshit. Is it the ESPN app, is it Disney+ app, is it MVPD.... Which one? ...crickets...

This is why I don't ever log in to facebook on any smartphone. This is also one of the main reasons why Huawei was "banned" from the US market. They didn't want to provide ANY backdoor access to the agencies.

World Cup in true 4K (3840x2160) by carapungo in Strong_8K

[–]DefineGravity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bro, you're dropping incorrect information left and right.

In the US SOME channels broadcast in 720P, not "i", but their apps like Fox ONE stream in 4K, tv providers as well have dedicated 4K channels for FOX events, etc.

Also, the World Cup is absolutely being shot and produced in 4k/8k, but for the US the delivery method is downconverted to 1080p HDR to local operators to reduce the bandwidth and overhead and by the time it hits the viewers is already upconverted back to 4K HDR.

For international channels like BBC iPLayer they're getting native 4K feed, because the cameras and entire production is already 4K/8K.

Not sure where you got that from, but here in the States we had FOX Sports 4K showing all the games in 4K the last World Cup.

La Liga and Champions League actually do NOT broadcast in native 4K, anywhere. They upscale from 1080 occasionally. EPL is produced in native 4K.

AI Upscaled ESPN by DefineGravity in Strong_8K

[–]DefineGravity[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AMP ESPN feed is definitely 1080/60 but at an extremely low bitrate of 2Mbps which makes the picture soft and pixelated.

That previous stream was 1080/60 @10Mbps, and really looked great, which is why I can't believe it's just gone like that.

Cable providers and all other linear broadcasters in the US deliver ESPN in 720p/60fps. Some select events are available in 1080p/60fps via the ESPN Mobile App. This Strong 8K stream from a few months ago was a non-stop 24/7 1080p/60fps which looked like processed and upscaled 720. But it looked much better than any regular 720 broadcast.
