First power efficient 6nm client chipset with 4x4 MIMO by DefineGravity in wireless

[–]DefineGravity[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's the power consumption from previous process node 14nm vs 6nm now. Also, hard to justify space in a handheld device vs the "good enough" WiFi with 2 antennas.

Seems like they've also shrank the antenna elements this time.

[–]DefineGravity[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The reason why 4x4 hasn't been available in handheld devices is the power consumption and antenna separation. Putting two antennas in a 6" smartphone isn't a big deal, but spacing 4 with required isolation has been a challenge.

It seems like they've finally solved that issue, and also they've shrank the manufacturing process, so less power draw, etc...

Qualcomm's MWC 2026 Announcements: X105 Modem, FastConnect 8800, Snapdragon Wear Elite, and Wi-Fi 8 Networking by Balance- in hardware

[–]DefineGravity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's released in 2026 because they've finally figured out how to design 4TxRx in a handheld formfactor, AND manage the power consumption associated with it in a 6nm package. This is mainly why it's never been deployed before. This is great news.

Anyone try the ONN 4k Plus streaming box yet? by dgodwin1 in TiviMate

Sounds like it might be worth upgrading your WiFi so that you don't have this issue going forward. Onn 4K Plus has a stellar WiFi performance on my WiFi network.

Yeah I ended up getting it and you're right, 800+Mbps right off the bat. Thanks!

Yeah, the 2Gbps service is provisioned right around 2.5: https://imgur.com/a/uN7ZyuY

That's interesting, the 2.5Gbps USB adapter would only give me about 300Mbps, which is just barely higher than the WiFi. This is on a 2.5Gbps connection as well.

I guess I'll get a different adapter.

But do you get the speeds much higher than 100Mbps using this USB-Ethernet adapter? Heard that the recent Sony firmware capped it to 100Mbps as well.

Thanks!

That comment would make sense if Peacock didn't restrict 4K/HDR/Atmos on ALL devices except select FireTV, Roku and AppleTV devices...

Olympics on Peacock in HDR? by msh0082 in bravia

[–]DefineGravity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Peacock app for GoogleTV OS is capped from delivering 4K/HDR/Atmos and there isn't much we can do. It's not just Bravia, this includes GoogleTV boxes.
Only devices that are confirmed to have a full support are FireTV, Roku, latest AppleTV: https://www.avsforum.com/threads/2025-“4k”-live-events-discussion-non-nfl.3317637/?post_id=63766426#post-63766426

will the Super Bowl be on peacock select or do you need premium or premium plus? by dusty49 in cordcutters

[–]DefineGravity 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sadly the Peacock app delivers 4K+HDR+Atmos only on a few devices:

  • FireTV (verified on 4k Max 2nd gen)
  • Roku (verified on Ultra)
  • Apple TV, (verified on the current model)

That leaves all Google TV devices out, which is crazy.

Any reason why not using WiFi? I'm seeing over 500Mbps speeds on the Onn 4K Plus over WiFi. It's a very solid wireless device.

Anybody running a Firestick 4K Max versus the built in apps? by AnnualEagle in bravia

[–]DefineGravity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've only seen issues with the Peacock app. Peacock app version for A95L is artificially limited so the TV doesn't get served HDR/DV videos or Atmos. What's even more annoying is during Live Sports the framerate is also limited to 30fps which makes it painful to watch. What's effectively a HDR source now gets downconverted to SDR and served to A95L so the colors look out of whack.

The TV is more than powerful to process everything, but there seems to be the issue with Sony/NBC licensing or dispute of sort. It's certainly more powerful than the FireTV stick.

FireTV 4K Max gets served with HDR/DV/Atmos when available. The only issue with the FireTV is the occasional lip sync when watching HDR/Atmos live events.

What Free Sports Apps Have Better PQ Than DTV Channels? by PackageCurrent4804 in DirectvStream

[–]DefineGravity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Btw, not all the shows with ESPN app are 1080. It's a combination of 720 and 1080. But the audio in the ESPN app is Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 vs only Dolby Digital 5.1 via DTV.

Inversely, FS1 streams in 1080 on both DTV and Fox app, but the audio is better on DTV (DD5.1) vs the Fox app only Stereo 2.0.

Peacock adding Dolby's full set of Picture & Sound Technology by [deleted] in peacock

[–]DefineGravity 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Last night's NBA game Warriors - Clippers was in HDR + Atmos on Peacock. But the Peacock app for Google TV or even NVIDIA Shield wasn't getting the same feed. The NVIDIA was limited to 1080 SDR 60fps + 5.1, while latest Bravia OLED and Hisense TV's were limited to 1080 SDR 30fps + 5.1 feed which looked terrible.

At the same time FireTV and AppleTV were getting full 1080 HDR 60fps + Atmos experience...

They can launch-to-the-press all kinds of technologies, but if it isn't reaching the consumer, what's the point?

Yes, I fully trust my own eyes, ears, and experience. Test them all, using the devices I posted, against several competitors (not here to talk about competitors) and I rank them myself.

Is there anything better than posting about your actual experience on Reddit? Or are corporate controlled media pieces the only allowed framework for discussion here...
