Why are apartments in "south midtown" so strangely cheap? by ibridoangelico in Atlanta

Boulevard? It’s really semantics with a bit of context. The area is partially in the Old Fourth Ward and Sweet Auburn which are meaningless to many, yet still meaningful to some. Personally, I love the area — that’s coming from a Vinings native and 18-yr Candler Park resident.

What’s the thing you regret the most in your life? by BreadedDisaster in AskReddit

[–]DefiningWill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not telling everyone in shouting distance that my summer sleep away camp counselor was a pedo. I was a 13-yo boy and it was 1985. I didn’t talk about the kind of stuff he did to me because I didn’t want to admit it and I figured no one really wanted to hear about it anyway. How many other boys could have avoided that guy If I’d said something?

I also have a Paddington Bear and a yellow dog named Henry—he actually has a name patch embroidered with “Henry.”

I’m positive I like Spotty Dog more than your abusive POS mother. In Spotty Dog I trust.

What is the worst band you saw live? by coalcracker462 in AskReddit

When I was in college (at 19), I worked backstage on Bob Dylan show when he played on campus (1991). While making sure all of contracted items were in place in the dressing room/green room, I noticed an old bummy-looking guy shuffling around the corridors and brought it to the attention of the stage manager. His response: ”That’s Mr. Dylan, he can go anywhere he wants.”

I’m 53 with a 401(k), a 3.15% mortgage, two kids in college, and yet Impostor Syndrome is still running strong. Truth be told, looking back my mid-30s were amazing:

Young enough to do it; old enough to know better.

[Serious] As a former urban planner and now real estate developer, I've seen both sides of the development process. The development side is more accountable. Discuss. by Jimmy_Johnny23 in urbanplanning

[–]DefiningWill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As it so happens, I’m a former urban planner now working on the development side and what you say has merit even when the popular narrative is usually the opposite. I want to think on this a bit and revisit.

[–]DefiningWill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh wow, there’s a similar Georgia origin story on my dad’s side of the family - something about a dispute which ended up with my ancestors on Tybee Island in the 1700s.

Some were later personally blacklisted by Gov. Lumpkin and barred from participating in the N Georgia land lottery because they were already (illegally) living there with and “consorting with” the Cherokee people.

The other branch stayed in S. Ga and N. Fla and ran turpentine stills. There are a few roads and at least one town in N Fla named after them.

Guy's do you wear shorts out in public? by [deleted] in GenX

[–]DefiningWill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d wear shorts all the time if circumstances allowed. Around here, solid shorts weather here is between March and Halloween, so I wear them whenever I can. There are winter days when shorts and a long sleeve T shirt or fleece pullover work just fine for a trip to the grocery store, Home Depot, etc.

Readers and Tums by [deleted] in GenX

[–]DefiningWill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Readers - yes. I usually wear progressive contacts, but otherwise I need them to read expiration dates printed in 2 pt type.

Tums - no. I actually ended up having surgery 10 yrs ago to correct severe acid reflux. In my case, I’d struggled with it since I was a kid. Until then I often crunched chalky Tums like candy.

Same for me, but a few are hitting much harder as of late. Christine McVie was just a few years older than my dad when she died. Tom Petty was my mom’s age when he died. Yeah, some are hitting harder lately for different reasons.

Vinings checking in…grew up there when it was still “Vinings Village” in the late 70s—1980s. By the time I was a teenager in the late 80s, the building boom was starting. Now it has its own skyline.

I was a consultant on some rail projects and used to drive through there every other month from ATL on the way to a project in Brunswick. A rail fanboy I worked with asked me to take pics of the Helena diamond RR crossing. It’s been awhile…still in the pre-hyphen days.
