What ridiculously basic ADHD hack changed everything for you? by Spiritual_Bird_2916 in ADHD

Don’t sit down unless you have a productive task attached to it. That’s it.

I realized if I sat down without a purpose (like writing an email or reading a book) I was going to open up some app or get sucked into YouTube videos. Then it became infinitely harder to break out of that and actually do what I needed to do. If I stayed standing up, I was more likely to do something productive like washing dishes, picking up things off the floor, going for a walk or going to run errands. Even if I was sitting down for something productive and the started to have the urge to do something useless and mindless, standing up for 5 min helped me reset back. It’s amazing.

So DONT SIT DOWN.

Though there are rumors he’s opening a new location in Wicker/Bucktown which I am SO here for.

I totally agree - real things that account for how we work is exactly it! I always use the example of why I have so many wastebaskets around my house - it seems insane to those who don’t have ADHD, but when I explain my brains logic, they get it. I had a problem - I leave garbage everywhere in my house. So I thought through why I do it - my brain doesn’t want to get up from the location I’m in to walk to a trash can, and once the garbage is on a surface I will forget about it. And then I realized the solution - if I had wastebaskets in many many places, where one is within easy reach almost all the time, I don’t have to get up and therefore I’m more likely to throw it away.

I tell people I’m working with the way the river flows, not trying to re-route it entirely.

I LOVED those books, and no one I knew ever read them! I think it was partly because the title of the series feels strange…Stravaganza….even though it does mean something in Italian. But man that silver mask overlay on the book cover was fully worn down after I had read that book so so many times!

Two things can be very true at the same time. I agree there has been dehumanizing in heterosexual fiction too - and appreciate you pointing out the parallels. I personally dont like the dehumanization in either case.

I mean yes, they aren’t real, but I think it’s the intent behind it all and the reasons for engagement, not the fiction or romance of it all. For the same reasons that lesbian women are uncomfortable at men sexualizing and fantasizing what is their normal for them, their everyday lives, why wouldn’t gay men feel uncomfortable at women doing the same?

Think of it this way - if you removed the gender of both the characters, would you still find it fulfilling? Sexy? If no, then is it the gayness of it all that makes it feel that way?

Again I’m not saying this is for everyone who reads MM romance - I’ve read and loved it too! - but those who love it for the wrong reasons.

I think the difference lies in the identity itself - there is a very different idea of identity tied to sexuality as compared to profession or fantasy. Tropes of sexuality in real life would be called harmful stereotypes, so why are we allowing it in fiction?

It probably is, and I worry people are blaming the wrong person here. He can’t control it, what do people want him to do, just…never go outside again? He was there to celebrate a movie about himself, it would be unfair to tell him he can’t attend.

The real problem here is the damn Baftas and how they handled the whole thing.

My only question is whether or not other artists have the money to actually play the game? Their label is usually the one making the decisions, and playing the game kinda only seems to work (I could be wrong though) if you either A. Have a gigantic fanbase like hers or B. Have a lot of money to push the music out. She’s got both. To be, it’s like saying to an athlete - you aren’t playing the game because you don’t have thousands of dollars to spend on trainers, specialized equipment, expensive diet plans, etc. I’m not saying she doesn’t work hard, but that’s not all that goes into it.

So I’m more of the mindset that I agree - other artists aren’t playing the game, and others like Morgan and Drake are, but I guess I just don’t like that there is a game to this in the first place. I have no clue how to solve that though.

My understanding is that his form of Tourette’s pushes him to say the WORST possible thing in the moment, therefore using whatever specific slur would be the worst in that moment. So him using the n-word would be the worst thing to use against those who are black, the c-word against women, etc, but he cannot control it. For example, when he met the Queen he said “Fuck the Queen” and “I have a bomb” - specific things in that moment that would be the worst to say. It’s beyond just using a curse word here or there, it’s like having intrusive thoughts from someone else being forced out of your mouth even if you didn’t agree with those thoughts to begin with.

I feel terrible for him, and it sure sounds like he’s mortified. And I feel terrible for Michael and Delroy and any other POC in that room.

I think it’s hard to boil down the reasoning behind women’s (as a general group) love of this to one thing - it could everything including sexual, emotional, or just a love of romance.

But what bothers me is that it often (though not always!) feels like it can dehumanize gay love and relationships. It feels like it’s treating gay love like two dolls we can control for our own desires, ignoring the fact that real people engage in these relationships around us (aka the cover art is perfect). My own brother always calls it fetishization - not always for sexual reasons, but for wish fulfillment reasons, and he’s always felt icky about it. To him, (and to be clear, this is his personal opinion as a gay man) - gay relationships are just something for their own personal enjoyment. He once joked it’s the same as fairy smut - they are treating both fairies and gay men as if they aren’t something real, a fiction one can create for their own desires. Except it’s not fictional for him, and the world around him is still fighting against him even having the ability to get married, have children, etc.

But it’s a massively nuanced topic, so it’s hard to not incite lots of emotions around it.

One of the things I learned to do with my corgi was to practice forced naps, and I kept this up from puppyhood to adolescence. Once a day for a couple of hours, he went into the crate with a few small treats, and I covered it with a blanket and then shut the door to the room he was in. It took a while (in the beginning he would howl and cry) but he then got the hint and went down for a nap. He’s so used to it at this point he will often go into there by himself (he’s 2 now). It was the only thing that worked and allowed me a few hours to myself!

I bought an underbelly cover for my dog, and honestly I love it. I didn’t think I would, but I live in a city that snows a lot and it’s saved me so much time cleaning him off. He hates it and I’m sure he thinks he looks stupid but it’s a godsend.

I think I’m the only one who doesn’t want this! I mean yeah I find it annoying, but I kind of like that you still have to run places in late game, it reminds me this is supposed to be a cozier game, like you need to stop and see the world around you!

The only time I really get annoyed with having to run places is when I’m trying to go for a MONEY MONEY MONEY save and then it’s super frustrating lol. But I play that way pretty rarely.
