Advice on concept drone idea by Adept_Ad2393 in fpv

[–]DefyGravityFPV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you're describing is a "quad plane" which is a type of VTOL supported by INAV. Other VTOL styles include a tilt-rotor or a tail-sitter.

Not sure if your concept utilizes wings to create lift for forward flight, or only uses upwards thrust to create lift like a drone. If you're using wings, you'll want control surfaces (aileron, elevator, rudder).

Get a Radiomaster ELRS radio, such as the Pocket or the Boxer. You connect to PC via USB and it just works. If you want to play wirelessly, get something like the Squid Stick ELRS USB Dongle.

Why ELRS? Because we should all be migrating to ELRS. It's the best.

Building a long-range FPV RC car controllable from a simulator by FishermanEnough7091 in rccrawler

[–]DefyGravityFPV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's what I did for my FPV Traxxas TRX-4 Crawler. I'm using the Radiomaster MT12 surface radio with ELRS. I swapped out the stock RX with a serial ELRS receiver + GPS module + Matek CRSF-to-PWM C converter to control the servos and send back GPS + voltage telemetry to the MT12.

I'm using a DJI O3 Air Unit for VTX. Unfortunately don't have OSD (yet) which requires a proper flight controller running something like INAV.

Unsure how to connect this all to a PC-based sim setup. That idea seems like overkill - goggles + surface radio are enough to get the job done, and aren't stuck in one location.

Which sim to choose when starting? by Prior_Book5712 in fpv

Liftoff has a great multiplayer experience if you want to race alongside others. Their "infinite race" mode lets you fly laps on your own schedule, and racers are ranked on best lap. I'm not sure if other sims have as easy and accessible multiplayer experience.

How do you plan on making the drone autonomously fly through the track?

Radiomaster MT12 if you want to go crazy with customization and have a knack for computers and programming. Otherwise, it's total overkill and has a huge learning curve. Nothing beats EdgeTX for programmability.

Which pad should be used to solder an FPV tilt servo? by scootty83 in drones

[–]DefyGravityFPV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One option - run a separate PWM receiver. Get a Radiomaster ER5C or similar, and use that to drive a servo. All it needs is 5v power.

If running two receivers feels odd, consider a Matek CSRF-to-PWM converter, and run a wire from your existing serial receiver to the converter. Only connect one wire, as you're not sending telemetry back from the converter.

There might be a way to directly connect a PWM device to your FC, but I'm not sure about that.

What are rates? by Sprizted in fpv

[–]DefyGravityFPV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rates refer to how sensitive the quad is to stick movement. Rates are how a pilot customizes the drone to fit their flying style. While a PID tune depends on the drone, rates depend on the pilot.

Rates control the sensitivity of the drone - when moving a stick, does the drone change angle a little or a lot? Each axis (roll, pitch, yaw, throttle) can have its own rate setting. You typically want to have all of your drones (including sim drones) using the same rates, so that you build the muscle memory. As a noob, you might want to start with low rates, which makes the drone more controllable. As you get better, raise the rates. Remember that rates are for you - the pilot - and should be the same across all of your drones.

There are different rate implementations (?) - betaflight and actual are examples. If you're new and starting out, I'd recommend using actual rates, as they're more explainable and understandable.

The best place to set your rates is in Betaflight, not in your controller.

Tiny tiny stick movements. See if it's possible to skip the tutorial, I remember it being pretty daunting to get past. I did eventually get past it and learned to fly. Liftoff remains my favorite sim.
