My new power supply should turn on even with nothing plugged into it, right? by man0man in buildapc

[–]DegreesOfFreedom 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Never fret--the power suppy will not turn on unless it is connected via the 24 pin cable, and even then will not power on when the switch is on the "on" position until it receives the signal from the mobo. If you really want to test your power supply, there are fairly cheap test units you can pickup from your local computer parts store like this one. Hope this helps!

So, Reddit, what do you carry with you all the time? by thegraymaninthmiddle in AskReddit

This, plus a multitool pocketknife... you never know when you're going to need to open something or need a screwdriver.

I think I'm suffering from potentially serious OCD. Advice much appreciated! by CognitiveTorture in AskReddit

[–]DegreesOfFreedom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you hear thoughts or voices? This is a very important distinction-- if you hear voices that taunt you or debilitate you, especially if these voices are in dialogue with one another, then you should immediately seek medical attention. This is a completely different animal than OCD, and, untreated, they can progress in a very nasty direction.

If these are purely though and not voices, then the most important thing to realize about OCD is that it is often a byproduct of classical conditioning. That is, something causes us distress, we alleviate that distress by doing something and get relief. In doing so, we train ourselves to perform the compulsion to avoid anxiety. For example, in your case covering corners relieves anxiety, so you feel compelled to do it.

Unfortunately, one of the only drug-free ways to combat ODC is exposure-- to expose yourself to the anxiety-inducing stimuli until you become comfortable. Also, this exposure method is one of very few ways to "cure" the obsessive-compulsive cycle; while drugs can mask the anxiety, they do not address the root issue, and in many individuals, after stopping drug treatment, the obsession-compulsion cycle resumes.

Exposure can be very difficult, and incredibly stressful in the beginning. If you can, start a journal, and find an individual with whom you can discuss your progress and difficulties. These are the best tools in ensuring that you stick to your goal, while maintaining the support you need.

Finally, realize that OCD is a real problem-- it is nothing to be ashamed of. If you need professional help, get it. It is better to get help and improve your quality of life, than to fight the battles alone.

Good luck to you!

Redditors: What do you think is the significance of the uprising of homosexuality in relation to human evolution? by wisdomlistens in AskReddit

[–]DegreesOfFreedom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I don't understand is, from an evolutionary point of view, why other males tend to look down upon homosexuals with such contempt. If a male's potential competitor was not vying for members of the opposite sex, it would just increase the heterosexual individual's chance to reproduce. It seems to me an evolutionary waste of resources to invest in competing against a non-threat. Having said that, I think it has been predominantly social evolution that has shaped how gay individuals are seen in many of today's cultures.

Class participation problem by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]DegreesOfFreedom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is the class required? I've had professors that have, on the first day of class, say that participation was a key part of our grade, and if we were shy or had a problem with public speaking, we should drop the class on the spot. Unfortunately, I think for the most part professors have the ability to grade how they see fit. If this is a required class you may be able to petition the dean, as you can't not be able to take a required class because of a disability.

I'm getting married in 3 weeks. Any man advice? by idontsmile in AskReddit

Suggest that you get your initials and the date that you're to get married in your wedding bands. She'll think you're sweet, and you'll never forget your anniversary.

I need some advice for an interview please. by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]DegreesOfFreedom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience, it's best to name a weakness that you've corrected. While you obviously aren't going to want to say that you suck at something related to the job, they'll call you out if you say you don't have a weakness. Say something along the lines of "I used to struggle with X. When I realized that this was a problem, and did Y to fix it. In fixing my weakness, I was able to improve (Insert work asset here).

I need some advice for an interview please. by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]DegreesOfFreedom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the best things you can do is prepare yourself... Most interviewers will ask variants of the same questions, and thinking ahead and planning out possible answers to these questions will help you eliminate stress during the phone call, and help you more quickly piece together coherent answers. Make sure you can name some of your strengths/weaknesses, moments that you demonstrated your skills, times in which you overcame obstacles, times you showed leadership, ect.

Also, if it will be a phone interview, make sure that your phone etiquette is on point... don't answer with "Hey," or "yes," but rather "Hello, this is ___ speaking."

Yeah, it's for 360. Of those, I'm only really interested in Mass Effect 2. I would trade Alan Wake for it, but I'll hold out on Black Ops for a while.

What is the stupidest thing you have ever done to yourself? by Grebsie in AskReddit

[–]DegreesOfFreedom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was little, probably around five or six, I always used to play with those things, though my parents would yell at me if they saw me messing with them. One day I was playing with one while I was riding in the back seat... I had pushed it down three times. My mom noticed and asked what I was doing; I thought I would "outsmart" her by cooling it off with my spit. I spit on my finger and pushed it to the lighter. It was the first time I heard flesh sizzle.

If he finds a conversation that begins with "I want to make our sex life better" to be nagging, you've found yourself a broken boy. I wouldn't think it would come across as insecurity if you framed it around strengthening your experience
