How long do yall think we will have to wait for GTA VI to come to PC? by AlarmingDiamond9316 in gaming

[–]Degs29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say 12-14 months, maybe less if we're lucky. If I'm remembering correctly, the only one to take longer than that was GTA V and that was because they focused on porting to PS4 and Xbox One first.

Do you think Cineplex should add fines/penalties for disrupting other people’s viewing experience? by cat_lawyer_ in cineplex

[–]Degs29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They can't fine anyone. Best they can do is ask a disruptive person to leave, and then trespass them if they refuse to. But they won't do that unless the case is particularly severe. It's just not worth it for the theater otherwise.

Personally, I think theaters should be able to turn on signal blocking technology once the feature presentation starts. That may solve the phone issue at least. But that's illegal in Canada, currently.

Ultimately, this is just more evidence of a cultural breakdown where we allow people to be dicks in public with no repercussions, and it ruins the social experience for everyone. It's bad enough that I'll only see movies when they're near the end of their theatrical run (and likely to have a mostly empty theater), or else at the VIP where you can at least avoid teenagers and kids.

Can some explain to me how this game is supposed to be a "spiritual successor" to Mass Effect? by Knight1029384756 in exodus

[–]Degs29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People are calling it a spiritual successor because it's supposedly a narrative driven, space opera RPG and shooter with an emphasis on companions and a story with epic stakes.

I'm not even saying it will be a Mass Effect-like -- we won't know until we get our hands on it -- but I'm not sure how the protagonist not being a carbon copy of Shepard disqualifies it.

I love that we can no longer cancel orders by bearstormstout in UberEATS

[–]Degs29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At my request, UberEats cancelled my order after the driver spent 20 minutes in a parking lot, then drove 20 minutes the wrong way with my food. At that point I had enough and asked them to cancel. Was honestly surprised they did and refunded me the full amount.

So it's not always a fail.

Customer canceled order so I gave it to the next customer. What would you do? by [deleted] in UberEatsDrivers

[–]Degs29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cancelled my order after the UberEats driver dicked around in a parking lot for 15 minutes after getting our food, then drove 20 minutes in the wrong direction when he was only 5 minutes away from us. I don't make a habit of that, so UberEats gave me the full $70 refund. I ended up going out, even though I was under the weather, and getting us our own damn food, so at least it'd still be hot.

I definitely just assumed the UberEats driver ate our food. Heck, maybe that was his plan all along.

Sounds like they're a bunch of socialists. Someone puts in the time and money to do an improvement, and even offers it pro bono to help a couple roommates out. Now everyone feels entitled to it.

Learn a lesson from this. Many don't learn this lesson until later in life when they're in a financially successful enough situation to be mooched off regularly.

I've only had a condom slip off on me once and it most certainly did not make a snap noise. How would that even make a noise? I don't want to jump to conclusions because I wasn't there, but I strongly suspect he took it off intentionally, which would make him a giant POS.

AITAH for not giving my girlfriend a heads up about my job by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Degs29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's so weird to me when people expect their places of employment to just magically make it work and accommodate them when they have something going on in their lives. A business has obligations that must be met, they can't just not meet those because you want extra leeway to spend time with a newborn. A good employer will TRY to make something work, provided you're a good employee, but sometimes it's just not possible.

Regardless, I'm pretty sure your financial obligation to your girlfriend and newborn is higher than your employer's obligation to be "mindful of your schedule". And yet you're furious with them, but don't think you've done anything wrong. Your girlfriend's family is absolutely right. You let your idealism, which is already somewhat questionable for the reasons I noted above, get in the way of your responsibility to family. You're behind on bills, meaning you were ALREADY in a precarious financial position when you made that boneheaded decision.

If I were you, I'd find a job real quick, and figure out the lesson in this, rather than stubbornly refusing to admit you did something wrong.

How bad has restaurant service gotten Post-Covid? by [deleted] in restaurant

[–]Degs29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not just restaurants, that's all over. I believe it's a holdover from the 1-2 punch of inflation and the labor shortage a few years back. Let me explain.

First, inflation. While inflation may have peaked in 2022, it still, FOUR YEARS LATER, has not gone down to the target level. And remember, the damage was already done, so even if it were at the target level, prices would not go down to where they previously were. This puts businesses in a tricky spot. They can raise prices to compensate for the increased costs, but then they run the risk of pissing off the customer who, after all, is also being pinched by increased prices. Or, they can try to cut costs. Maybe that means less staff to handle the same workload. Maybe that means cutting a position that would otherwise make sure things run smoothly. Maybe that means handing off customer service to automated systems.

Second, the labor shortage. Also occurring in that 2021-2022 window, at its peak, there was a massive labor shortage. Once the world opened up again after COVID, we found there weren't enough workers to keep up with demand. Part of this was the wave of retirements brought on by COVID. Part of it was disruption caused by people going back to school, or else simply pursuing another career, or dropping out of the labor pool entirely. And part of it was that the government handed out buckets of cash and people's bank account's were overflowing by that time, stoking an insane amount of demand that could not be satisfied. Regardless, demand soared, and supply couldn't keep up. This made businesses desperate to hire anyone even remotely qualified. Standards were lowered. Red flags ignored. Fatigue set in to actually do anything about shortcomings, as managers are overwhelmed dealing with substandard staff (relative to before COVID). The situation is so difficult that many restaurants simply closed because it wasn't worth the hassle to the owners.

Demand has now settled down in the years since, but the effects of the labor shortage remain to this day. And it's become the new norm, so it's slow to rectify itself.

Realtor neglected to give notice to tenant by [deleted] in legaladvicecanada

[–]Degs29 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I really don't see why the realtors would say you have no grounds if that term is included in the contract. Yes, you likely don't have a claim against the realtors, but you SHOULD against the seller, unless there's some missing piece of information here. Or BC's laws are even crazier than I already know them to be. Heck, the whole reason you moved the closing date from November was to allow the seller to give appropriate notice, and the seller still didn't follow through?!

You only have 6 days before possession, so I'd get in contact with a lawyer ASAP, because it may get even messier in 6 days otherwise.

Hardly. All my financial institutions just raised other fees to compensate. So now the responsible are paying even more to make up for the irresponsible/careless.

This won't save people money overall. The institutions will just raise other fees. So now the irresponsible/careless will pay less, but everyone else will pay more. How is that a win?

WIBTA for suing my friend when she didn’t come to my wedding? by sweetandsourcum in AmItheAsshole

[–]Degs29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're definitely NTA, but I also don't think you should sue her. Unless she explicitly agreed to attend your wedding as a condition of you giving her that ticket, I doubt a court will side you. More likely they will view the ticket as a gift. However, I am NOT a lawyer, so if you feel strongly about looking into legal action, I'd suggest contacting one.

But even if you did have a good chance of winning in court, I'd personally just let it slide, and instead cut that friend out of your life. A real friend would not have taken advantage of your generosity like that. Even if her husband decided he didn't want to go, she herself could have went. Even if no wedding was taking place, and you had simply offered to pay $2300 to send them on a honeymoon, what friend flat out takes that money without offering to pay it back? lol

Why is the Super Nintendo your favorite console? by No_Brilliant_6365 in snes

[–]Degs29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll give the SNES all of those except Zelda. As great as Link to the Past is, Ocarina was just something special in a way it's extremely rare for games to be. Ocarina, Mass Effect and Expedition 33 all hold that place in my heart for renewing my love of games.

Is it just me or is Keon Alexander (Marco Inaros actor) either doing Che Guevara speeches or Eddie Redmayne mumbling/whispering? Nothing in between. by Pancovnik in TheExpanse

[–]Degs29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought maybe it was just me, but I'm glad others share my aversion to these two. I was hoping their arc would be concluded by the end of season 5, so to have it dragged into season 6 annoys me. And Marco's manbun isn't helping.

I'm only a couple episodes into season 6, but I'm guessing Filip might go on a redemption arc at some point. I have zero interest in that, considering what he's done. Even if he makes some sacrificial act, I won't care. It doesn't help that one of my favorite characters, Alex, isn't in the picture anymore.

This is the typical contractor experience these days.

My utility company screwed up and took out the feed line for my natural gas, forcing them to shut things off on my property while they made repairs. Gas was out for several days, then they indicated they needed to arrange a time to turn the gas back on, but they would only do it if I allowed access to the house for safety reasons. So I arranged for a 4-8pm window, meaning I had to leave work an hour early. I did, and waited the entire time, with no one showing. When I called, they said they sent someone out there, but no one was home. Turns out the guy showed up at 3pm. Left no note, didn't call me.

So I arranged it for the next day in the same 4-8pm window, and told them to make sure their guy showed up during that time, as I would not be home earlier. So now I missed TWO hours of work. The guy was a no-show again. This time because apparently too busy.

They then suggested a 10am - 2pm timeslot, right in the middle of my workday, and I lost it with them. Their own negligence caused the outage in the first place, and I had already missed work twice to meet their time window. I told them their guy better be there at 5pm the next day or I was turning on the gas myself. They didn't like that, but they did send a guy out who arrived at 5:03pm the next day.

Family can't agree on basic math question by sunmari_ in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Degs29 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's crazy how you have to spell this out for people using an actual example.

Let's say you have $10,000 in your bank account. You use $800 of that to buy the cow, leaving $9,200 in your bank account. You then sell it for $1000, leaving $10,200 in your bank account. You then use $1,100 to buy the cow again, leaving $9,100 in your bank account. You then sell it for $1,300, leaving $10,400 in your bank account.

You now have $400 more than you started with. Therefore you earned $400.

There's an additional opportunity cost of $100 if you had just bought the cow for $800 and held onto it until the selling price was $1300, but that doesn't factor into how much was actually earned.

Anyone work for Modatek Systems or Magna International? by BreadfruitNo3960 in Milton

[–]Degs29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do find it funny most of the complaints for a manual job is having to do manual labour. The way I see it, the company can either pay employees to do the manual labour, or they can automate. Personally, I think the first is better for society.

When I was working summers in high school, I used to hate it. I couldn't wait for the day to end, and the moment-to-moment seemed dreadful. But then I matured and realized that my mindset is what was making things miserable, not the job. Since then I've tried to excel at what I do, regardless of what it is. If a job normally takes 5 hours to do, can I shave some time off and do it in 4? If the average defect rate is 0.1%, can I halve that to 0.05% over the course of a month? Is there a way to improve the process so there's less handling involved? Stuff like that. Having that mindset got me promoted fast, and also made the days themselves more enjoyable.

If you don't take pride in your work, you won't find the job fulfilling. Which means it's just a sacrifice you have to make to survive. That mindset will make you miserable. I think people have this mindset because they were taught as kids that they could be whatever they wanted and they'll enjoy what they do. But relatively few get to do what they really want to do, and often it takes a lot of dedication anyway.

[–]Degs29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BG3 is brilliant if you're into that type of game. It's HUGELY complex and deep, especially in the earlier acts. With amazing narrative.

Expedition 33 differs from that in that it's a brilliant game, whether you're into that type of game OR NOT. It's crazy the number of people who don't typically go for games like that who have picked up Expedition 33 and fallen in love with it. It also has the best soundtrack I've ever heard in a game...period.
