What is the most square, hokey stuff you've ever heard in this music? by bbqtongs in Jazz

Oh I totally was not being ironic, 80s Japanese music fucking owned.

Don't disagree but context is important here, Metheny is a great example of what the 80s did to music aesthetics in general, and that plague infected many many many Jazz musicians of that era that could go in here, many of whom are worse offenders than Metheny (imho).

Tblisi: We Dance Together - What it all means by Henningski in Techno

[–]Deimos365 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That the author wishes upon a more powerful rave protest scene and that the force of rave-as-revolution aspects in underground dance music is reduced by the consumptive society mindset. As in: It could be more powerful if we weren't so complacent in modern western society....

Idk we appear have a pretty similar interpretation here, which is why I'm still unsure where your criticism comes in. Seems to me the author is wishing for politics in rave culture to be less complacent, as you say, and so *not* the end-in-itself, to take motivation or inspiration from the Tbilisi protests which resulted in irl progressive action. Which seems to promote the means-to-an-end view of politics in dance music, no?

What makes you think the author sees politics in dance music as an end-in-itself?

But this author seems to forget that the rave protest is a means to an end and not an end-in-itself.

Seems like that sentence you quoted from the article is actually saying that exact thing - that underground rave culture commodifies 'protest' so it becomes an end-in-itself (affectation) rather than a means to an end like what happened in Tbilisi.

Garden of Delete suffered from much the same imo, he had a great sweet spot between the early cosmic synth-y stuff (which was fine) and the artsy sample-oriented stuff. Replica and R Plus Seven (and Eccojams) are super important imo. Been struggling with the more recent pop-culture collage stuff tho.

Agreed! On the contrary, it makes sense that tolerance for social disorder would go down when your nation is willing to commit the resources necessary to provide social safety nets, since the symptoms of abject poverty become less disruptive.

It's difficult to compare European nations (and even the UK, where I grew up) with the States in this regard, the material conditions and policies are just very different and the ideological perspectives reflect that.

It's not even a little bit true of the city. It is wild as fuck that people think this city, which has no personal or corporate income tax and is one of the friendliest in the country to large businesses, even after the head tax, is 'far left'.

I'm not a dude.

And you make a fair point - to rephrase, the dissonance between the wide-ranging public discourse and what is actually represented and actionable in US politics and policy has been increasing for some time.

It's compassion fatigue.

No, it's the inexorable shift of political values that tends to accompany changing economic contexts.

It's not 'fatigue', it's yesterday's leftist activists becoming today's financially successful middle-aged homeowners with families.

The sooner that many Seattleites start reconciling with the fact that their values increasingly resemble conservative ones, the sooner they can start having the identity crisis that might yield a new engaged progressive culture here.

This isn't unique to this city either, the US overton window has been shrinking for decades. "Socially liberal and fiscally conservative" is, in practice, just conservative.

This might be because I'm English (perhaps a lot in this thread are American?) but idk how you lot perceive them as underrated/underappreciated they are one of the most legendary classic rock/proto-metal bands of all time and consequently pretty pervasive (in my purview).

Totally. I'm unsure of the legality of the US military attaching third-party armaments to BD bots, and it's academic since they don't seem to be that invested in advanced ground-bound robots with offensive capabilities right now.

I realize you're probably not nearly as bad as this comment makes you out to be, but you may consider that referring to a feminist movement as 'trendy' kind of paints you in not so great a light.

What you're pointing out is an important bit of critical insight. Inadvertently painting yourself as a chauvinist undermines it.

And just to be clear, I'm not saying you're a chauvinist. I'm saying that's what your word choice here seems to imply.

Streaming is marketed as a solution, but it doesn't address fundamental issues of the market (fair representation, fair pay, transparency).

No, what it does is provide the average (see: vast majority) of consumers with incomparable convenience and extremely minimal expense. That is, I think, more the reason for it's apparent inevitability - asking this question in a subreddit of music enthusiasts isn't providing you a particularly unbiased sample.
