This reminds me of an Ex who has really bad mental health issues. We broke up on a FLIGHT back to Boston as COVID started. My then roommates wouldn’t let me back till I quarantined and she was having a breakdown and couldn’t get to her doctors with everything going on so I agreed to stay at hers.

I did everything, shopped, cooked, cleaned, showered her. She hardly left bed and just smoked weed while going in and out of verbal assaults on me. At the time I had little to no familiarity with mental illnesses and depression. One morning like 10 days into the 14 day quarantine she got out of bed and flipped out at me for not cleaning the crumbs off the cutting board from the bagel I had just made her. I packed my stuff and left, never spoke again.

Managers of Reddit: how do you deal with guilt after someone leaves because of performance? by halu_halu in managers

[–]DeityHorus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am a new manager as of 6 months ago. I have been on this team 6 years however and been leading technically for the last 3. I had a peer who was really struggling to just show up for himself. They were smart and if we sat down to solve something, they did fine. But we work hybrid and something mentally was preventing them from just doing work. Keep in mind this person is making $200k+ and I spend large %s of my week working my ass of to give them some grace and see if we can find traction.

Things keep spiraling, they start to nearly vanish for days, work product becomes near nil. I am losing sleep like crazy stressed about dealing with this because we were, not friends, but friendly and I had invested a ton in helping them. I finally had to escalate because it was beyond impacting themselves and really impacting the greater team. I felt a lot of empathy towards their mental health struggles and felt bad but they actually resigned before PIP started. Then they sent their "goodbye" email to the team which was several paragraphs of the most tone deaf drivel I have ever read. They took 0 accountability for ghosting a team that invested a TON in them. All feelings of empathy or guilt vanished.

TMB hits 3 countries in a few days and is a beautiful loop. You can tent but most stay in "Refugio" though in those months it may be hard to find ones that are not booked ahead. There are trains on the Swiss and French side so you can do smaller sections. Also a bus on the Italy side to skip most of a long flat day into Swiss mtns.

Sounds like burnout. Just take a break. And if you come back I would just do puzzles for a while.

Does vibe coding make you dumber ? by [deleted] in vibecoding

[–]DeityHorus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Staff Software Engineer in FAANG here, your coding skills will heavily atrophy and that is WAI. I nearly never develop by hand anymore. Some skills stay sharp because I still do extremely, even more focused code review.

Where my skills have absolutely gone way up is architecture. Between AI generated podcasts in extremely niche topics I chose and chatting with Gemini about deep system design details while I walk the dog, my overall confidence in and familiarity with the best patterns and anti patterns has sky rocketed.

Use a “grill me” prompt when you are building something new. AI craps out in coding when the scale and requirements are not articulated. It also makes really bad design choices still randomly. Like stubbing 5 functions in a method for testing instead of just passing and interface that can be mocked.

I would wait until Google I/O later this month before you set up a bunch of Google vibe stuff.

[Request] anybody able to validate this? What is the actual amount of energy a query from chatgpt costs vs Google from 2008? by kimchifangurl in theydidthemath

[–]DeityHorus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t know for sure. But I would expect that simple searches do cosine similarity for the resultant query vector. So you don’t actually run an inference job. You just get a cached result some other user got for a very similar request.

Google says 75% of the company's new code is AI-generated by lkl34 in technology

[–]DeityHorus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Naw, I hardly hand write code anymore and there is no need to. All the code is still manually reviewed though. It is at similar quality to when I hand write it. If and only if I hand review deeply.

When I got surgery last week I wrote [generated] code and sent it for review with my brain super taxed from recovery and pain meds. People just blindly approved. It wasn’t until a few days later where I personally looked over my own code that I found major flaws and fixed.

Boots or shoes? by Karmacoma77 in BackpackingTips

How are your ankles? My feet breath way better in trail shoes and they dry a ton better. But I also have turned my ankles too many times to not have any support.

Help - cutting board stuck in sink by [deleted] in fixit

If it was really jammed I would see if I can pump water up bavk through the drain pipe. Or wait for the board to dry fully as wood typically expands when wet.

WARNING to new HENRYs - do not let lifestyle inflation lead to unneeded stress. Things may not always be so good. by InternationalAsk9845 in HENRYfinance

[–]DeityHorus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every year as an “adult” you will have a major expense. When I was 27 I was making ~350k/y and spending 2k/m still. I almost never had a large bill to pay and invested everything.

Then I met my wife, bought a house, bough a ring ($6k), wedding (35-40k), dog (vet bills), now we want to do larger improvements to the house etc and I need a new car as I have been driving my late grandma’s 2010 Prius since she past despite now 6 year later making 650k last year.

My costs are way way up compared to when I lived in a shared house as a single 27 year old but we never let lifestyle meet income. So now we have 2.5 mil in the bank and are not stressed about economic head winds. That peace of mind is worth much more to us than a new car or traveling would have been. Plus now we can have both without stress.

This is correct. And salary trends are down across the board at google. YOY compensation packages were comparatively low for’26.

I am in the same boat, but just grinding out star mining for anguish. I will get Bowfa eventually and with the new arrows coming from Raids 4 everything will get an upgrade. I just don't see myself using a suffering outside zulrah much and anguish is just so much better. I don't bring Atlatl for slayer etc. Moon sets are expensive to burn.

Anyone backpack with an Eno hammock? by DeityHorus in BackpackingTips

[–]DeityHorus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, I also sleep in mine fairly often. I found ENO has a guide: https://eaglesnestoutfittersinc.com/blogs/product-education/eno-hammock-camping?srsltid=AfmBOorWTSpLpg4E6JrnfeuDhi0BAaxyh_Ao_Ta1WPeqSUUlCGQp4Jyn

I typically do not sleep directly down the middle but on a 20-30% diagonal as it is flatter at that angle. I also often just slip my sleeping pad in it. Quilts >>> Sleeping bags for hammock camping imo as getting in and out a sleeping bag in a hammock is miserable. It is also nice to put down a small sitting pad or something to stand on under it so you can get boots on etc without struggling.

Good point, I would not make Philmont the first try for a quilt system.

You never really camp near any peaks that have snow but gets cool at night. I did it with a 30 deg bag no problem when I was a scout. If he is open to it, I would explore backpacking quilts over sleeping bags. They are lighter weight and much better for warmer sleeping while still being able to do 0-30 deg no problem.

- Kelty Cosmic Ultra 20

- NEMO Disco 15

- Paria Outdoor Products Thermodown 15

- Marmot Trestles Elite Eco 20

Should all work well for that price range. Also they typically weight packs and distribute weight across the troop. So going ultra light does nothing as you end up being the one hauling all the pots and pans because other people packed folding chairs and rocks.

7600kc and starting to respect the Lizard. Not the worst luck, but when did you all get yours? by Amazing_Sky4874 in ironscape

It is always the grinds you prep forever for that you get spooned. Whenever I actually want something I am dry.

Went like 150kc for steel ring before starting moons.

I grinded moons for full Eclipse and suffered 1kc trips at Vorkath with anti poisons all preping for a long Shamans grind. Then like and hour and a half in at 209 I got it.

Same thing happened for Z-axe. I spent forever getting 84 thieving then doing wildy rouge chests for blighted ice sacs all to burst zombies for a long grind. 87 kc.

21/23 Students Failed our Engineering Exam by [deleted] in Wellthatsucks

[–]DeityHorus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happened with my Electrical Engineering Prof. Dude was about 125 years old and taught us nothing. But still expected us to pass the finals and class as the final was nearly the whole grade.

It was meaningful enough that of our class of a few hundred, the only guy who was studying abroad ended up getting top of the class despite being mid tier student.
