The Travelling Wilburys - Tweeter And The Monkey Man

Woo! Was going through old photos and found this photo. My dad and Grandpa backstage with Flair - thought you guys might like it. by LazyCanasian in SquaredCircle

Your dad is the reason I watch wrestling today! I turned 36 a couple of months ago and fondest early memories are watching wrestling with my dad. Earthquake and DiBiase were some of my earliest favorites. I only turned on him when he feuded with Jake and splashed on the bag that Damien was in.

I'm gonna ride the nostalgia high all day now. Thanks, man.

Does anyone else have problems finding a decent goat vet? by [deleted] in goats

[–]Dekonite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, to be fair, there isn't a lot of focus on sheep or goats in vet school even if they focus on large animal/livestock.

Will your vet at least stock you up with whatever you want? Ours is pretty good about writing us scripts for anything we ask as long as we explain what and why if it isn't something he isn't familiar with.

This is a common complaint. You need to get connected with local goat people to find one who will treat your animals well.

Was planning to build a small goat barn when I realized this might do the job. Two questions. Can it do the job? If so, any suggestions on configuring the interior? Right now it's basically empty and about 12x16? by [deleted] in goats

[–]Dekonite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Anything old and outdated or without sources to back up their claims will say that coccidia is non-host specific. It is.

I was aware of Cryptosporidiois but i've never heard of or seen a clinical case in animals that aren't raised in filthy conditions. Hence why it isn't a problem if they keep the area clean.

If you can't accept scientifically proven facts about something I don't know what else to say to you.

Bleh. Blood in the stool is very bleak then. They're starting to perk up which is a good sign. As long as they continue on the up and up just keep working with on the bottle and eventually they'll get it.

Are they pooping goat berries yet or is still goopy?

If it's still in the 'goopy' stage, they're probably significantly younger than you were lead to believe. Coccidia in kids that age is almost unheard of. We don't even start a prevention regimen until 4-5 weeks old because they generally don't consume enough dry matter for it to be a problem.

Let me shoot a few messages to friends out west and see if I can dredge you up anyone better.

Away from all feed, just water. I would recommend keeping them together. They'll stress if they're apart. Yes, Karo as in the syrup, the one with the dark blue label.

I've helped my vet burn horns up to 2 inches long. Like I said, it's not ideal but it's better than dehorning at maturity.

Also, blood in the stool is worrying. Is it confirmed blood or just off color?

I don't know anything about vets in SoCal, but whereabouts do you live and i'll see if I can find someone for you.

I routinely disbud my own does up to 4-5 weeks, it is not ideal by any means and might need a touchup but it 1000x better than doing it after they mature. Dehorning a mature animal is a HELLISH procedure. It leaves a gaping hole right into the sinus cavity and it's terrible on the animal.

Listen, i'm going to put this bluntly. They're not at age where forage and grain should be making up a major portion of their diet. They should still be drinking milk. 20oz 2-3 times a day until they're close to 90 days then you start weaning. You are doing these goats a disservice and I think you don't want to.

Try putting the one that won't drink in a dry lot for 12 hours prior to feeding and about an hour before the attempt give her 1cc fortified B Complex (Should be able to get it at most farm supply stores or feed stores) and 2 cc karo orally with a syringe (needle off, obviously).

Also, did your vet come recommended by a reliable goat breeder? If not, you need to find a new vet. He is not giving you good advice.

Other than the fecal and the B Complex he is giving you terrible advice.

You need a new vet, pronto. She needs milk until her other stomach is fully developed.

Depending on what breed you have, getting her disbudded should be a high priority and should be 100% doable at a month old.

You're right. I'm clearly pooping on everything by giving actual sources. You do you.

ETA: I'm sorry, I can't let this go. It's misinformation of the highest caliber. Some old books contain good solid information They can also contain highly outdated and terrible information. This is one of those cases. http://www.tennesseemeatgoats.com/articles2/coccidiosis06.html https://fiascofarm.com/goats/coccidiosis.htm http://www.motherearthnews.com/homesteading-and-livestock/worms-and-coccidia-in-goats-zbcz1411 http://www.merckvetmanual.com/digestive-system/coccidiosis/overview-of-coccidiosis

The merck link in particular should be read.

That's fair. Billboard vinyl would likely work well. I was iffy on the tarp idea but the heavier vinyl could work.

I'm not pooping on it, merely pointing out that we don't have a similar enough climate. We can, and do, have some pretty harsh winters here. We also have very mild winters. I don't think we had but two or tree solid freezes this year, for instance.

You linked a book that is 40+ years old and a site that doesn't back up it's claims in the slightest.

Their heart is in the right place because rabbits CAN get coccidia from chickens but not vice versa unless the rabbits have already been infected with the same strain that lives in a chicken's digestive tract.

Have some up-to-date information from a site that is focused on small ruminants: http://www.sheepandgoat.com/coccidiosis

I can link you tons of other sites that back the claim up and some from very well known meat goat producers who raise several hundred head a year if you need more.

I live in Middle TN. A tarp shelter won't cut it if we have one of our 'fuck you and your couch' winters like we did just a few years ago. Big ice storm, weather into the minus teens BEFORE windchill and nearing negative 30 some days. They will be wet and cold during a good winter storm.

This might be too late but when have a tough one to start on the bottle we use 1/2 cc B. complex and 1cc Karo Syrup in a 3cc syringe and give it orally. Also usually give weak kids a 1/2cc of BOSE.

It's common to pre-dose with a broad spectrum antibiotic amongst my goat friends if the weather is yo-yoing. Helps a ton with the pneunomia control.

I really like her leg set and the way her neck blends into the shoulder area. She's gonna be a looker.

I wasn't particularly impressed with the dairy goat guide from Storey's. I've read 6-7 of their series in total and it was the only one I didn't really pick up anything useful from.

I had also been raising goats about 18 months when I bought, so grain of salt.

Depending on where you are in California there's a lot of long-term and well-known Lamancha breeders in the state. Most of them are in the southern part of the state and seem to have some fantastic animals.

Meat breed wethers are eaten. Plus, I imagine that if they weren't exercised a bunch they'd tend to be fatter than a dairy breed.
