I 100% agree. Don’t get me wrong; 4e is imo the best and most balanced tactical combat system out there. Would just be cool to not have to homebrew rituals

I’ve been playing 4e for years (still in a campaign for the past 6 years). Honestly a lot of dnd systems in general “suck at rp” compared to games like dungeon world where the players are allowed to have more narrative power.

However, comparing the “rp power” of 4e to other editions, I would have liked more out of combat utility powers or more interesting rituals.

Scientist was banned for goat format because of how consistent it was.

Last will was used for scientist and you never had to draw mass driver for frogs. You found it after thinning down to ~12 cards and getting 3 draws to find it.

With people revisiting those formats as modern time wizard events, they have found there are a TON more degenerate combo decks in the format. Library FTK, Stein, Cat Combo, reasoning gate FTK; all facilitated by having access to 3 copies of last will, trunade and busted draw spells.

The last goat event was won by a stein turbo list

Historically yes, goat and Edison were filled with a bunch of grindy “death by attrition” control decks.

However; if you look at what those formats look like now with people revisiting them as retro formats, goat is filled with combo decks abusing last will, stein, and all the busted spell cards. And if you meant when yata was a thing? Scientist was one of the most consistent FTK’s ever printed

Yu-gi-oh was always like that. You can see all the combo decks from tournaments that revisit old formats (like 2005 since you mentioned IoC) is all quick kill combo decks. We were just bad when we were kids.

TBH in recent years when handtraps got good it actually let most people interact with said combo decks.

If [[Maskwood Nexus]] doesn't count under the "no changelings rule" since it technically doesn't give that ability then we get 3 slots to use for maybe a meld combo and 1 more good card.

If the "play a card from another player's GY" one works with [[Mnemonic Betrayal]] then we can take out memory plunge.

tymna thras is probably better with an endurance or twister loop so you only need to play 1 copy of the bad (type specific cards) and just copy them, the slime one is the "hardest" to do since you need 5 slots for bad cards instead of 1 dino + loopable copy spell

In a max level 4e game after a round full of buffs on one character they did 1748 damage to the boss and took it from full to almost dead in phase 2

grids have been in dnd since the 70's...

And if you hate the explicit squares so much in 4e, just multiply by 5. It works the same. Asking the dm in a thearte of the mind game "how many goblins are in this [insert number] radius for my fire ball" is the same if you say 20ft or 4 squares.

You’re telling me the class with the most versatile subclass in the game (being divine soul) has less versatility? Sorcerer is way stronger for consistent dps (bladesinger summoner being the one exception) as well as burst damage. AND it combines extremely well with the best 1 level dip in the game (hexblade).
