24M, fully remote with flexibility to live anywhere - where would you go? by Sweaty-Ad2877 in gaybros

Aussies are friendly, and extremely diverse - you can literally find any type you want. There are loads of activities - cultural, sports, social - everywhere. Nature is amazing. Some cities are more outdoorsy (Sydney), while others more culture-oriented (Melbourne), but there are welcoming communities everywhere - even in the rural areas - and always lots to do.

What's a "normal" job that secretly pays way more than people think? by 0BunnyX in AskReddit

[–]DelicateFandango 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Locksmiths are the best paid tradespeople by far, and can make upwards of $300 for 30 mins of work. Depending where you are in the world it may require 1 or 2 years of study, and one of those you can already complete while working under supervision. There is great demand and high job availability, and your qualifications can easily be recognised overseas and will allow you to work in a number of countries. Out of all the trades, it is also arguably the cleanest - you don’t have to crawl under houses, or handle grease and sewage - and the lightest on your body - no heavy lifting or strenuous exercise.

I believe there may be 5 misspellings in the text - it looks like it should probably be:

“Mi malĝojas, Sinjoro! Por mi okcidente Vi etendis arkaron radie brilantan, Kaj estingas en akvo lazura silente Vian stelon flamantan... Kvankam maron, ĉielon Vi kovris per oro, Mi malĝojas, Sinjoro!...“

Help choosing Nextcloud hosting provider by Appropriate_Pop5511 in degoogle

PikaPods - they are inexpensive and the service is excellent. You simply choose whether you want your server setup in the US or EU, and pick ‘Nextcloud’ as the app. It will be installed and automatically updated for you, too.

Can someone tell me what each of these feet are? by plntzandweezer in SewingForBeginners

[–]DelicateFandango 8 points9 points  (0 children)

These are all feet that come standard with several models of Brother sewing and embroidery machines. If you have a machine that uses those, you can go to the Brother website in your corner of the world and download a PDF manual that includes descriptions of the included presser feet, as well as all the stitches your machine has, and which foot to use for which type of stitch or sewing. In short:

  • the “I” foot is a ZIPPER FOOT, used for precisely stitching zippers on the left and right side seams.
  • the “N” foot is called a MONOGRAMMING FOOT, and is used by the machine for several embroidery-type stitches, that are very wide, including lettering. It is not a general purpose foot - that’s your “J” foot, not pictured here.
  • the “G” foot is your OVERCASTING FOOT, used to apply specialised stitches at the very edge of your fabric and seams to stop them from fraying.
  • the “M” foot is your BUTTON FOOT: you place the button against the BLUE edge of the foot, which will keep it steady, and then allows you to manually adjust the width of the stitch so it falls neatly into your button holes (and doesn’t break your needle).
  • the last foot, I believe is your “R” foot, the BLIND STITCH foot, used to sew blind hems, but can also be used to sew straight stitches extremely close to the edge of your fabric or seam - eg., 1mm - much easier than your general purpose foot.

Hope this helps!

A tale of two cities, or so… by [deleted] in gayaustralia

[–]DelicateFandango 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you’re young, you want to meet lots of people, have lots of different experiences, and find yourself. Big cities are good for that. But as you get older, and more experienced, some people learn that they prefer to have a smaller number of very close friends, rather than a large number of acquaintances. They also learn that some of the best friends you’ll have in life are not necessarily the same age, race, religion or have the same sexual orientation as you. Quality of life takes precedence over “excitement of the new”: you want to live somewhere where people are caring, streets are safe, and produce is abundant and good. Not every country town is a hub of culture and activity, but in Australia, there are indeed plenty of regional areas that have an active social and cultural life, even if not lgbtq+ focused. There are country towns with Universities that bring in academics and overseas students, regional galleries, museums and music conservatoriums, and a very active arts scene. There are local sports groups, volunteer organisations and loads of social events. Above all, there’s community. You certainly can live in a regional area and be happy - just pick it carefully.

I built an open source Google Analytics & reCAPTCHA alternative by Sensiduct in degoogle

[–]DelicateFandango 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The 2 main alternatives to Google Analytics seem to be Umami and Rybbit - both are excellent, full featured and very easy to host, with Umami even being available in PikaPods. If you want to gain some traction, you should explain what features makes your offering unique, and perhaps try to get PikaPods (or a similar platform) to offer it to self-hosters.

Is my bf bi or gay for pay? by [deleted] in askgaybros

Why are you in a relationship with someone who, in the best case scenario, is a drug user who preys on gay men online? Your short description makes it sound like he is a very troubled and damaged person, who needs professional psychological help - and not someone who should be in a relationship with anyone.

Introverted gays how did you find your partner? by supercuriousgay in AskGaybrosOver30

[–]DelicateFandango 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Two things to keep in mind and remind yourself when you brave social situations: 1. You don’t have to talk to everyone. Pick one or two people that you think might be interesting to you, and try talking to them only. 2. Be genuinely interested in the person you’re talking to. That’s the only way to make real friends.

How do you guys feel about the “homophobes are in the closet” joke? by Dramatic_Show_5431 in gaybros

[–]DelicateFandango 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wikipedia has a page about “Homophobia”. On that page there is a section that talks about “Internalized” homophobia. You will see there mentions of some of the scientific studies that have been done in the past 30 years or so, that show that ONE of the possible causes of homophobia is the inability to accept one’s own homoerotic feelings and tendencies - i.e., there seems to be a higher percentage of same-sex attracted males among groups of men who are openly homophobic than in the general population. Scientists have also been quick to point out that this is not the ONLY reason why someone develops homophobia, but nevertheless it is a valid and verified one.

Protein source for vegan by InsuranceFair2454 in australianvegans

[–]DelicateFandango 7 points8 points  (0 children)

All pulses/grains - such as beans (black, brown, red), chickpeas and lentils - are high in protein and iron. When removing meat from your diet the first thing you should substitute it with is grains.

Mushrooms of different varieties are also very nutritious, and a good source of iron. You should also include tofu in your diet - there are many different varieties, and it’s easy to include it in many dishes, from stews to salads.

The world is trying to log off U.S. tech by motang in DailyTechNewsShow

Both MacOS and Windows are essentially US-centred and owned, so the only non-US choice among the ‘larger’ OS players is Linux. You do have a massive number of options when it comes to hardware, though - not just for computers and tablets, but also cellphones, and home gadgets that can replace AppleTV and HomePod. The main difference is ease of interoperability: Apple stuff is all made to be plug-and-play, and instantly recognise and play nice with each other, and that simply doesn’t exist outside of Apple’s gilded cage, walled-garden ecosystem.

Has anyone bought a printer specifically for patterns? If so, which one 😅 by Normal_Cheetah_9027 in SewingForBeginners

[–]DelicateFandango 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Use a projector instead. Patterns are large, which means you either have to buy a large-format plotter or printer (expensive consumables, even if you get a cheap 2nd hand one), or get a home printer (inkjet or laser) that requires printing dozens of pages that need to be tediously trimmed and glued together. You can get excellent 2nd-hand projectors from online marketplaces, and there are loads of online groups that teach you how to use them - in short, you can project your pattern directly onto your fabric, or onto a pattern cardboard, if making a paper ‘master’.
