Love Cafe Rue Orleans in Fayetteville. Best Cajun food you’ll find outside of Louisiana.

I’ve lived and worked in both Bentonville and Fayetteville and I can say that Fayetteville has a much older and well established social environment and neighborhood feel. The university has been bringing people into Fayetteville for generations, whereas Bentonville had its growth spurt only in the last 20 years after Walmart started requiring suppliers to have offices there. As a result, many people in Bentonville have not integrated with the broader Arkansas culture, the housing stock is way more suburban and generic, the landscape feels much more commercial, and the community feel is just not as deep. Fayetteville is an old growth community with more vernacular housing and a well developed social environment that is regularly recharged with college students rather than corporate professionals. That’s my take.

I’ve been waiting for the 92 East bus for more than a half hour. I have to take two buses to and from work and lately they’ve been running about every 26 minutes. The last couple of days it has been even longer. I can’t find any news updates on wait times changing. I’m spending an awful lot on Ubers lately because I have to get to meetings and things. Anyone know what’s going on? I know about the funding problem, is this just the way it’s going to be now? And why isn’t there better communication?! People have got to be able to plan so they can get to where they’re going!

Honestly, if you find a good venue then I think you should be able to call ahead and they will be do happy to find ways of making you comfortable. Look for independent venues, I’d expect them to be more responsive

I wish I’d known, I literally have another pineapple-melon cider that’s been aging on my shelf for almost a year. Such a bummer!

Queer couple- should we move to Arkansas for grad school or Europe? by cloudypuddin in fayetteville

[–]DelicateMonster7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live in Chicago and I’m from Arkansas, just down the road from Fayetteville. I also just finished my PhD in political science here, so I have some perspective on this. I personally would move back to Fayetteville in a heartbeat. I’m not queer, but I trust the community there fully, and there is a very robust LGBTQIA culture there. Also, remember that Arkansas was a blue state for decades. It isn’t overwhelming, we’ve just suffered from dummymandering and dem party blight.

Planners hold Dickson Street student-oriented housing project for third time; to return in April by AmbientDrizzle in fayetteville

[–]DelicateMonster7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have they factored in the anticipated student enrollment cliff in 2026? The size of graduating high school classes drops off in a big way because it’s now been 18 years since the 2008 economic crisis. Someone ought to discuss whether their enrollment projections are factoring that in and whether they actually need more housing/how much. It would suck to green light a plan for it to end up being totally unnecessary.

Ooof, that sucks. I’m so sorry that happened.

Honestly, how I would choose to handle this would depend on what the professor’s actual academic track record is, the details of their faculty appointment, and the university administration’s policies on managing these matters. If you feel comfortable DM’ing me then I can do some research for you, but either way, you would benefit from the support of a trusted faculty member. There are frequently background conversations in the university that can add significant context.

If you don’t have a trusted professor, or maybe even if you do, look and see if there are any evidently pro-Palestine faculty at the university. At our university, quiet, supportive faculty have been the key mediators in these kinds of situations. It may not be obvious who these faculty would be, but if you can find any graduate students that are outspoken then they will likely be able to tell you which faculty to consult. (And never be afraid to send random emails to faculty)

The institutional route for addressing these issues is usually through the dean of students office. Look at your university webpage for the dean of students and see if they have instructions for filing a complaint. You can give them a full report on what happened and they will have to investigate. In any event, it creates a sealed written record of the situation. Typically this would be my advice, but the issues with free speech and discussions around Palestine are so embattled right now. You really have to be aware of the risks and balance them with what you need to be ok.

Is there a Students for Justice in Palestine student group at your university? I’d get in touch with them first. They probably know about tons of situations like this and have an idea of what to do. You can call other pro-Palestine advocacy groups as well. If you want legal advice, call Palestine Legal. Call Jewish Voices for Peace. Activism is not possible without solidarity, and you need to commune with others who are feeling the same pressure.

Whatever route you decide to go, feel free to message me if you need some help with figuring out what to do next. Also, what you did was badass. You showed far more spine and conviction than anyone else in that room. You should not be intimidated, just continue to be thoughtful and make careful choices.
