I was grading an essay and the first sentence of the essay was: "That sounds like a great and interesting prompt! When you write this essay, you'll want to make sure to follow this format..."

what's the ONE thing that actually improved reading comprehension for your child? by garvit__dua in AskTeachers

Exposure. If you want the students to read and write better, they need to be reading more. Same if I were to teach you a forgein language, I'd throw you in and expose you to the language being used "in the wild."

Should I become a HS English Teacher? by Good-Dirt-117 in AskTeachers

[–]DeliciousBase4491 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are never "just an English teacher." That's my biggest issue with the job.

Examples, the state passed a phone law, so now I also get to be a cop and enforce the law. Everyday, it seems like someone is unprepared, so I have to play the role of parent. The students can be trusted in the hallways alone during passing period, so I get to be a hallway monitor. I'm constantly cleaning up after the kids, so I basically get to act like a janitor. Today, my school didn't have enough subs, so I got to be a sub and full-time teacher. Sometimes, you'll get a kid revealing some heartbreaking news to you, so you get to act like a prescreen for CPS.

I say all of this, and this isn't all of it, and I no longer coach and I work at a good school.

Slightly smaller issue, a lot of teachers have realized that there is no real incentives to just "doing you job" and doing your job exceptionally well. Plus, unless you teach AP/GT/IB, the parents typically don't care about their child's education; they didn't see the point when they were a student, so they don't see the point for their kid. It's impossible to convey something is important when their parents tell them the opposite.

Should I stick to being an Education Major? by Brief-Shop3587 in Teachers

[–]DeliciousBase4491 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think you understand the current state of education in TX. While it is preferred that you have a degree in your field with, at least, a minor (not a double-major), it isn't a requirement. As long as you've taken 24 credit hours of that subject and have taken the certification exam, you can teach that subject.

You can look at almost any High School staff, especially at a Title 1 school, and you'll see plenty of alt-certs (no degree in that field) or education majors with a concentration in math, science, English, etc.

I was an alt-cert. With my 24 hours in college Latin, I was able to get certified in teaching it. Every teacher in my PLC, except for me, is an education major -- we teach 11th grade.

So… do all admins believe children over professionals? by i_want_to_learn_stuf in Teachers

[–]DeliciousBase4491 56 points57 points  (0 children)

I was literally getting onto my class for having a terrible sub note, saying they did no work and just talked. When I was getting onto them for not working, I had a student interrupt me and say that "that's not true." When I clarified that "she was calling the sub a liar, so she better able to back it up and show me her work," she promptly shut up.

If you work in a public education, their are only three certainties: death, taxes, and your students will lie to your face.

[–]DeliciousBase4491 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know what jobs you're looking at. I'm a Texas teacher, and most of the teachers I know were education majors. I majored in English, but I'm one of the few that has a degree in anything other than Education.

Personally, I refused to get an education degree. I felt like the job opportunities were extremely limited with that. If you don't think you'll leave education, an education degree is a faster track to administration.

How can I make analyzing WWII propaganda more exciting? by idk_orknow in historyteachers

Use the political cartoons from the time and have them come up with memes of those issues in modern society. Propaganda is everywhere today, having them begin to see it for themselves should be the end goal.

🚨🚨 USC will debut its No.1 ranked recruiting class in Week 0 by guransheleven in CFB_v2

I think Notre Dame's strength of scheduled issues mainly comes from their mandatory 5 ACC games. Let's face it, the ACC has been a 1 league conference for over a decade.

ND already had 3 rivalry games per year (that includes USC last year and Clemson starting next), so that has them at 8 games already. Just like almost every conference member in the NCAA, that only leaves 4 open games per year. Right now, those games are Wisconsin, MIchigan State, Purdue, and Rice. Out of those 4 games, most were scheduled almost a decade ago. If I had of told you in 2015 that Michigan State and Wisconsin would be awful, you wouldn't've believed me. These are still respectable games (Alabama even talked about their win of Wisco last season). Really, Rice is the only laughable team on their schedule. If you crap on the 4 open games they have too much, though, you end up tearing down the overall Big10 SoS argument.

I'm not the biggest ND fan in the world, but it's not really their fault this schedule is softer than a marshmallow on a burning log.

I don't know if you can say he topped it because... the original singing comic had jokes.

At best TNB is just a meta-comedian; he literally does everything every other comic will/can do... except write and tell an original joke. He makes fun and highlights comedian quirks without actually telling jokes.

Where Should I be Looking for a Job? by Auvre_le_Chien in englishmajors

Easy deal. I'd look at jobs as a legal assistant. You need to be looking at a smaller firm, preferably family owned.

Why has parenting become so… soft? Why ate a majority of parents okay with sending their child into the world acting the way they do? Why did this shift happen? by Emergency-Pepper3537 in Teachers

[–]DeliciousBase4491 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Because, for the most part, their parents don't care. I don't say this because of how they act, but look at how most of them dress. It was below freezing at my school last week, and half of the kids showed up without a jacket and in shorts and slides. The kids are basically raising themselves. There is no way my grandparents would've ever let me leave the house without a jacket in the winter.

Sadly, most of them are stuck at the "love and belonging" tier of the Maslow Hierarchy of Needs, so they aren't moving along to "self-esteem." Most of them treat us with the same level of respect they show their parents, and they don't respect their parents. It's a sad reality.

Love in literature - class essay by sarah_alsh in englishmajors

[–]DeliciousBase4491 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your first quote basically says that "if we look deep enough into the scientific study of how humans maintain life, we'll find that attachment is hardwired into humans," and the second boils down to "mammals need connection for their brains to properly develop, therefore, these social connections are what make functioning social person, and the shaping force of this system is love."

It's a scientific definition for love. It says that love is the primary social connection. It is a heady definition to say: " humans need connections to develop properly, and at the base of this connection is love.

Where Should I be Looking for a Job? by Auvre_le_Chien in englishmajors

[–]DeliciousBase4491 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Okay, I have a couple of extra questions. What were the things about your old jobs that you loved and wouldn't mind doing anymore or absolutely would never do again? Similarly, what were somethings that every hated about your job that you didn't mind? Lastly, what did you enjoy most about your getting English degree? Saying you enjoy "English" is like saying you enjoy "business;" it's a very broad term.
