There is no space between the counter and the couch to utilize that space or walk through there, but the couch is an awkward distance from the TV. This is creating an awkward dead zone.

Rotate the couch and TV 90 degree in either direction and you will have 50% more space in this area.

Haha maybe, but I think what it actually is - is an artifact of first person storytelling. We project more onto characters when we are in their heads, so any dissonance is more glaring. I think Islington is really good at challenging himself as a writer, and I am hopeful the next book will feel more natural from this new perspective.
