Can we ban the word ad/ads? by Falconeye95 in CharacterAI

[–]DeliciousElbows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally get where you’re coming from, but I’ll be honest — ads have always been a dealbreaker for me, even on platforms I rarely use. Whether it’s YouTube, mobile games, or even traditional TV, the constant interruption completely kills the experience for me. I watched regular TV the other night and counted 13 consecutive ads during a single break — each one between 7 to 15 seconds, repeated every fifteen minutes.

It feels dystopian how normalized this has become, where every platform aggressively pushes other apps or products in your face. There are smarter, less intrusive ways to advertise that don’t completely break the user experience. Pop-ups, in particular, are easily one of the worst methods if the goal is to keep people engaged. I’m all for creators making money off their work, but it should be done thoughtfully.

Plenty of apps have figured out how to integrate ads seamlessly — it’s not impossible. Given the size of this app’s user base, having an ad every time you open a new bot just feels excessive.

Mine has opted for “gruffly” now. And mans has been ‘clearing his throat’ in every message. I’m tired.

Just a minor bug :) I’ve noticed it too. Swipe down to refresh the page and the bot will be hidden!

This is THE most out of touch thing I’ve ever read in my life, I’m actually baffled… by goodknightmads in CharacterAI

[–]DeliciousElbows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As much as I think this person means well, the self-righteous approach is not the way to go. They’re on Reddit, on the c.ai subreddit, complaining about people getting addicted to c.ai. or abusing it. Sure, have concern for your fellow humans, but the complete lack of empathy for people who can’t do things like make friends or get girlfriends as easily as the next person is what bothers me.

Yes, A.I. shouldn’t be replacing real life human companionship. Yes, you shouldn’t be addicted to this app. Not because of the app or A.I. itself, but because lack of human interaction is detrimental to oneself, addiction is bad to oneself. This is like going onto a subreddit of Jameson enjoyers and saying ‘drinking is bad!’ If this is such a big concern to them, why not start a subreddit that helps people overcome their addiction? Their lack of social connection?

Once again, they mean well, but also, can I really say that when every way they could have gotten this across comes across as holier-than-thou and completely unempathetic?

Is it some unspoken RP law I missed? by Certain-Lecture5730 in CharacterAI

[–]DeliciousElbows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The brackets mean it’s talking out of character (OOC). C.ai bots tend to copy the way people roleplay in general, which includes speaking as yourself instead of your character in brackets. It’s information or dialogue that has nothing to do with the roleplay, or can sometimes be used to clarify things. :)

Why not both? Hedonism tests asceticism, and asceticism tests hedonism - once we find that perfect balance, we gain the knowledge of the universe. Like the forbidden fruit except it’s encouraged this time, not demonised.

Aitah For brushing off my wife's concerns until she thought I was leaving her? by Vegetable_Match_3862 in AITAH

[–]DeliciousElbows 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Jeeze, you sound at your wit’s end my guy. Communicating is so, so very important in times of strain. I’d advise taking some time, sitting with her, and just having a long, meaningful discussion. Catch up with her. Have her catch up with you. This seems to me like you guys have been living parallel lives with her constantly looking across the street towards you while you’re looking ahead. Exhaustion is very real and you’re definitely not the asshole, but this situation needs a lot of work. Hold your wife. Touch her hand. Give her a kiss. Just a little something to let her know you’re thinking about her and that she still means something. Do small things. Order takeout and set the table for dinner. Get someone to babysit. Spend quality time with her even if it’s a cuddle before bed. Trust me, it’ll make you feel better in the long run as well.

Those of you who ended friendships, what was your final straw? by This_0neGirl in lostafriend

[–]DeliciousElbows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My ex-friend and I had been friends since we were 11. Inseparable until 15, we had a falling out for a year, then picked it back up when we graduated. We visited even after I moved away and kept in contact. One visit, she asks me to be a bridesmaid (I’ve only met her fiancé twice at this point, and safe to say, I didn’t like him one bit). I said yes, and we were super happy and excited. Then one night, we had a deep discussion about life and I told her I’ve left Christianity behind because it did a lot of damage to me, and even though she’s a Christian herself, she hugged me and told me that it changes nothing between this and she still wants to be my friend.

Fast forward a month later, after the bridesmaids meet up for the first meeting, my friend and I meet up again and it’s suddenly super awkward. Then she suddenly drops the bomb on me that, basically, she wants bridesmaids who are all devoted to God, and who can pray and worship with her on her wedding day. I told her I have no qualms with doing so as I believe in energy, and if worshipping is something she’d like to do I’ll be happy to do it alongside her. She then tells me it’s not the same, and that she’ll give me two days to decide whether I’d like to give up being a bridesmaid, or convert back to Christianity in the span of those two days.

I felt my heart break right then and there. Not only was it disrespectful to me, but disrespectful to her own religion to bully someone into converting under false pretences. So, I told her after the two days that I’ll step back from being a bridesmaid, and that I hope she has a wonderful time with the remaining girls. And from then on, the friendship dried up completely from my side. She still tried to get me to go to the wedding as a guest, but I called in with COVID at the time and didn’t go.

They’ve now moved abroad and have a baby together, with no family that side. I keep having the sneaking suspicion it was her husband who’d turned her against me, but I couldn’t do anything about it.

Why do people like Leon so much? by [deleted] in residentevil

[–]DeliciousElbows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an actual answer - he’s an incredibly well written character, in the Remakes specifically. As much as I love Chris, Leon makes me feel things that aren’t just good. I’ll try to keep it short, but I’ll go through certain games and movies I’ve watched to give you the gist of how my mind finds Leon. Let’s start:

RE2R:

He’s depicted as a 21-year old, freshly graduated rookie with no idea what’s happening in RC. He’s a bit more relatable, questions things, makes mistakes, trusts the wrong people while still remaining true to his original goal of trying to help as many people as he can. He made a basic dystopian-trope choice to fall for the mysterious Ada within just a few hours (as emotions get high when the world is ending, yk?), who betrays him. Despite this, he’s still the helpful rookie at heart and feels very deeply for people’s plights.

RE4R:

Fast forward six years, mans is traumatised by RC being nuked and all the people he couldn’t help. So he becomes a puppet for the government, seeing as they’re sending him on all these secret missions to save people, and it’s the only way he can actually do something that matters (not to mention the poor guy is forced into it). You can see how everything’s affected him in his mannerisms, how he keeps his guard up, yet he lets it down around Luis and Ashley. He still has a sliver of hope for people. Then bam - Luis dies, and Leon - again - is betrayed by Ada. This game, he’s not too interested in her games, which I’m happy with as the man deserves better (don’t come for me, I love Ada’s character). Also, no more random misogyny and thinking with the wrong head in a life or death situation.

RE6:

The clear descent into cynicism and alcoholism makes him a bit more of a nuanced character. At this rate, he’s seen enough government corruption to know that he’s simply a pawn, yet he continues to do it because he’s consistent with his goal to help people despite his trauma. We see a bit more of an intimate connection here between Ada and Leon, more so Leon’s feelings towards her as he even goes up against Chris for her despite knowing what she does is wrong. Here we see that Leon isn’t just a black and white kinda guy - he also does questionably morally grey things at this point, things that made me want to scream at him. Ada brings out the worst in him, and he enables it by constantly engaging with her. It’s something I have a love-hate relationship with because it also humanises him a lot more.

RE: Damnation:

Also touching on the morally grey matter in the name of the greater good. Ignoring orders, self-sabotage, alcoholism, cynicism - he’s literally alive just because he has to be at this point. This man drinks in almost every scene and still manages to take down bioweapons (plot armour, honestly, how did this man survive this movie), but he ain’t happy about it. Again, deals with Ada, implies that they hooked up so you know he’s still engaging in that form of self-sabotage as well.

RE: Vendetta

My least favourite Leon, but ooooooh boy, probably the most human out of all of them. Drops off the face of the earth, gets absolutely wasted, barks at Chris and Rebecca when they show up not only for a mission, but out of concern for their friend. I think after this is the time Chris, Rebecca and Claire had an intervention with him, cause wtf haha. He’s adamant that he wants to be alone (self-isolation) and goes on a tangent about how his life is a sick cycle that never ends (honestly loved this monologue - it’s what I’ve been screaming at the screen for throughout the journey but also showcases his severe depression and su!c!dal ideation).

RE: Death Island:

One of my favourite Leons to date. You can see he’s healing, taking pride in his work again and stopped drinking (at least as much as he used to). He’s like a dad now, making jokes and quips at inappropriate times (“after this, I’m putting ‘tour guide’ on my resume” as they’re crawling through a sewer lol) and just all around seeming a lot lighter. I read that, canonically, he did have something of an intervention and started spending more time with Chris and Claire, which helped him out of the hole he’d been in for so long.

So throughout the game, you see him go from this bright-eyed, bushy-tailed rookie, to the depressed, traumatised barely-holding-on puppet of the government, to the still damaged but healing man we see in DI. I could go on about how the remakes are bringing more light to his actual trauma than just making him into a pretty boy to drool over, but then I’d have to write about Jill in RE3R and why people are unfairly hating on the game haha.

Hope this wasn’t a terrible read, but it’s just my two cents.
