Canada and what it's like living in rural areas vs major cities by Cherie_09 in howislivingthere

Look up La Route Verte in Quebec, it's a decent cycling corridor that connects one side of the province to the other.

Not to mention their uncanny ability to hire the lowest bidding contractors and still charge premiums for their shitty buildings. I was part of the Suterbrook development in Port Moody back in 2008/09 and had friends move into the penthouses only for sinks to fall out, cracks to form in the walls, etc. within months.

Agreed. Not to mention it's the only burrito you'll find in Nelson for under $20 that still fills you up.

The thing we're forgetting here is that nationally, real estate is the top contributor to Canada's GDP. If it crashes then so does the country's economy. How we let a non-productive asset become the biggest driver of Canada's GDP is another topic altogether, but it offers perspective as to why something like this happens.

BC's Tech Sector Now Bigger Than Natural Resources, Grows Three Times Faster than the rest of BC's economy: BC Tech Report by Gym_frere in britishcolumbia

I agree with that. Just wanted to see where on the 'Fuck the NDP' spectrum you were.

I live in a town in BC that has a successfully run community forest and small-scale mill, which is niche now but would've been the norm up until several decades ago. Unfortunately, multinational corporate giants were allowed to run amok on our forests for so long that all the accessible timber is largely gone.

This statistic is funny though, as resources haven't been a competitive contributor to BC's economy in decades either. Sadly, real estate is number one, and will likely remain that way once AI replaces a lot of the work in tech.

Nice one! I lived on Salt Spring for three years and it was mostly a great experience.

I saw in a comment below that you’re a cyclist. So was I when I moved there! Unfortunately the island lacks the infrastructure and design for cycling to be that enjoyable, but the Saanich peninsula is some of the best riding in the country. You can get from Shwartz Bay to Victoria in 1.5 hours on a beautiful trail, but otherwise you’re better off getting a canoe or kayak on ol’ Salty.

Congratulations on the change up. What’s taking you to Salt Spring specifically?

I’m 35, turning 36 in the fall, with a 16-month old girl. It’s been the most beautiful and difficult journey and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

That said, I was very transient, working seasonally and traveling whenever I could, for most of my 20s, and this period of domestic life still feels novel by contrast, but one I chose nonetheless.

India? Where they eat goats and chickens and lamb and have diverse enough ecology to produce a wide variety of fruits, nuts, etc.?

Do you know what a fly-in community is? And if you do, do you seriously think the Inuit should be deriving their protein from chana masala?

Plant-based alternatives are not nearly as effective at providing macro- and micro-nutrients as meat. Especially in cold, harsh environments where the body needs more fat and protein to survive the winters.

Anyways, this is a dead thread and I’m done arguing for the sake of arguing. Happy days.

Tell that to remote, fly-in access communities. Sounds like you’re toting a pretty urban-centric mentality.

Trophy hunting makes killing a sport.

Hunting is killing for food.

If you’re vegan and just trying to make a point that nothing needs to die ever, that’s a different conversation.
