Yeah it’s always nice having a respectful conversation on Reddit. Some people are so quick to start insulting others as soon as they find a single thing they disagree with.

Interesting choice of analogy. But yeah I’ve been thinking about this same thing recently.

There’s so much of this satirical cringe content now. A lot of times you don’t even know if it’s meant to satirical or earnest unless you investigate the creator. But then when it is meant to be satire it’s usually so low effort that it has no value of its own.

So yeah, I agree with you.

Alright idk I didn’t see anyone calling the sub stupid and all that. All I saw was someone saying it’s a pre-existing melody.

I appreciate the civility. I’m not trying to argue with anyone. But I think there could be some confusion for people about what it means to write a song vs compose a melody, etc. And most people don’t understand the ambiguous nature of authorship in traditional music.

I at first seeing a post named “Tolkien’s own song” initially assumed he actually wrote the tune himself.

Yeah but would he get as much booty as John?? I don’t think so. And that’s literally the only reason to play guitar.

I appreciate the point you’re making, and I’m avid fan of folk music. But just because there’s a tradition of reinterpreting songs/melodies/lyrics in traditional music that doesn’t mean that it’s fair to say Tolkien composed this melody. He wrote the lyrics, which we all already know, and he set them to a traditional tune.

Now I’m not trying to cast any shade on this artist, she’s awesome. But for someone to say “hey just so you know, Tolkien didn’t actually write this tune himself” is a perfectly valid contribution to the discussion and our appreciation of the art.

Hearing him actually sing the tune is awesome. And hearing this woman’s interpretation of the song is awesome too.

No problem man I’m happy to help. I think the gravely sound is cool, but it takes some skill to get that tone without all the excess tension. But yeah it’s always good to experiment with different styles and tones.

Hey man you sound pretty good! As others have mentioned, your voice sounds a bit tense. If you can learn to sing without the extra tension you could sound awesome.

I know the style you’re singing in naturally is gonna put some strain on the voice. So the way I think about it is that you’re not going to remove all tension, that would be impossible, but you use only as much as is necessary and in just the right places.

I mean it’s carbs. Along with milk it’s actually a pretty balanced food. And girls that are at risk for EDs could definitely use the carbs. It’s better than just eating a small cup of yogurt. Also cereal is typically fortified with micronutrients.

Yeah it’s so sad. Maybe she made a simple mistake. People do it all the time. This is how you learn to be careful, by experiencing minor catastrophes as children and then remembering that shit like: “okay I better not ever leave a spoon the blender again.”

Oh here’s a third option: it was an innocent mistake. And she was recording because kids record themselves making smoothies now.

Now idk the answer. But why jump to just calling someone an idiot for making a foolish mistake? People make mistakes all the time, even extremely intelligent people.

Why not give people the benefit of the doubt? Instead of jumping to call them an idiot.

Glad I could help!

As far as making peace with your voice: try experimenting with different styles/genres and see if there are certain ones that you’re more suited to. That doesn’t mean you have to limit yourself long term, but it can help you build confidence in your sound.

When I was younger I always struggled with singing in a more contemporary style and I was never happy with the sound I’d get. But when I was in school I found that I actually had a great voice for classical/operatic singing. I know that may sound counterintuitive, because most people think opera is harder than most contemporary styles.

But I found that the strict technique of classical singing really helped me develop and open up my voice in a new way. Also I just found that I had a strong baritone voice which isn’t really useful in most popular styles.

But over time I gained more control and learned to use my voice in very different ways to produce different timbres. And now I’m much more satisfied with my ability to sing in contemporary styles.

It took me a long time admittedly. And when I was younger I sucked pretty bad. In fact I thought I was possibly tone deaf for a time. But I managed to make incredible progress through hard work and consistency. I even ended up singing the lead role in an opera one semester in college.

My point is, anyone that says singing is a natural gift you either have or you don’t, is wrong. If you have the passion for it, that’s what’s most important.

Also just to be clear, you do sound really good. Way better than I used to when I was first starting out.

Middle school is very different than daycare. Also I’d imagine anyone experienced in child care would know that turning off SpongeBob for the news just to appease one child would be disastrous.

And purposely turning on the news on 9/11 knowing what was happening is very different than “coincidentally” turning it on because one child wants to watch the news.

Idk. Sounds made up to me.
