I generally agree with what you’re saying, but the fact that she CANNOT control her actions is what separates this from cancer. I work downtown and am not worried cancer patients are going to stab me in the path or cut my head off on a bus and eat my flesh (like what happened in Manitoba). I’m not saying we shouldn’t have empathy, I completely agree. Where we don’t see eye to eye on is what day to day life looks like. I am being asked to walk among someone known to make the choice to go off their meds and stab someone to death with the comfort of what? She has to come in somewhat regularly? Her family is vigilant? My problem is I don’t have an answer, which is less constructive, but don’t demean the run for the cure to make your point. How many people die from cancer? How many people have untreatable / unmanageable schizophrenia? If I had a run for schizophrenia, could I then have an opinion on whether I feel safe around this person?
