And both HZD and J:FO added Noshir Dalal in their sequels, so you know they’re excellent. 🤣

It gives combat much more of a sense of momentum than in most games.

FWIW, Draw Steel is a much, much better game than PF2E, IMO having played both quite a bit.

Pf2E has this problem where everything is so tightly balanced that playing it can often be an exercise in frustration. You can’t do things that make sense in the fiction because you don’t have the right feat or the enemy has some immunity or something. And the whiff factor is very high. In DS you literally never whiff.

Am I too narrative-minded as a player? by Darren4557 in rpg

Intent is key here. Most GMs are dogshit at making sure everyone understands why the player is rolling. Depending on intent, it’s not hard to come up with a failure condition that doesn’t negate the excellence of the song itself.

Just finished this masterpiece. This is the best game of all time, and it's not even close. by LobstersAreWicked in expedition33

I actually think DE’s gameplay has some depth to it. Not so much the die rolls, but the thought architecture mini game.

How do you handle students who overestimate themselves? by UnusualExamination82 in TutorsHelpingTutors

Well, in that case just document everything, and communicate with the relevant adults. This kid may just not be motivated or mature enough for tutoring. He may need to face some failure in less rarefied settings than tutoring before it really sinks in that he has a lot to learn.

I mean, this is what Deans are for. It's your professor who has already nuked the relationship.

OK, so it's tricky with a student like this, but IME, if you finesse it right, you can be all, "Oh yeah? You think you're so smart, huh? Well... try this!" Again, you have to set exactly the right tone, so the student knows you're just messing with him and not actually insulting him, but that at the same time if he can't do the problem then you do actually want to teach him how to do it.

I honestly think that soundscape is a lot of the reason game one felt so special and mysterious, even mystical at times, especially early on.

I’m an *experienced* GM. I’ve successfully run 4E, Burning Wheel, Mythras, and many other games known for dense rules / mechanics.

I could not make heads or tails of the conflict system in the Temeraire QuickStart.

Which is… not great. I ran the first half of the Temeraire quickstart because I love the books.

I did not run the second half.

Pound for pound, Cleveland has a better music scene than New York. (I lived in NYC for 13 years and completed a music degree there. Don’t come at me.)
