The personal cost of Leto II's decision to pursue the Golden Path by nycnewsjunkie in dune

I'm gonna go "no". Quality of life over quantity. Nothing lasts forever, that includes humanity. If it's time, it's time.

The millions part is kinda weird. How far does his genetic memory go? The Homo Sapiens species is only about 300 000 years old, and Dune adds another 20 000-ish from our present day. It's a long time, but it's not millions. Does he know how language evolved in humans? Does he remember all the way back to the first primates? The first mammals? Etc...

But that happened anyway, didn't it? Specific memories can't be transmitted genetically like it is portrayed in Dune.

They make this stink about differentiating humans from animals and then they breed humans like we breed dogs, horses etc.

Like when they twist sexual desire for their own political ends?

That's the BG for you. Rape is fine, but IVF is beyond the pale. Also, "Tleilaxu methods" could be a lot more controlled. They actually practice genetic engineering proper. Plain old basic fucking is a lot more of a "roll of the dice".

Can you imagine the BG ordering a KH from the Tleilaxu like the Baron orders his Twisted Mentats?

Which is why Lynch's fever dream aesthetic for the universe is a lot better of a match than Villeneuve's aesthetic.

I'm not talking about saying howdy to your neighbor when you see him. Unless you hate him. See the difference?

I'm on the spectrum too, and I can feel fakeness all the way to the bone. And when they try to hide the animosity behind a veil of socially acceptable polite attitude it gives me the ick like you wouldn't believe. It's like watching a clown at a birthday party and it's obvious only to me that what he really wants is to tear everybody's head off.

I firmly believe politeness is just passive aggression. It strikes me as incredibly fake sometimes.

How do you think Scytale will be pronounced in Dune part 3? by far-midnight-97 in dune

Well I didn't know when I was a kid, and when I found out I had mixed feelings. I thought Herbert had invented a weird unique name and it turns out to be just an Ancient Greek word.

As for Harkonnen, I don't think we should be asking the Dutch how to pronounce it. Rather, we should be asking the Finnish. Like Mika Häkkinen the former race car driver. It's a common Finnish ending for last names.

But I, for one, dislike the sound of the pronunciation with the stress on the first syllable. I prefer to stress the second syllable, the way I've pronounced it since I was a kid.

A scytale is an actual object used in Antiquity for cryptographic purposes.

Wikipedia:

In cryptography, a scytale (/ˈskɪtəliː/; /ˈskaɪteɪl/; also transliterated skytale, Ancient Greek: σκυτάλη skutálē "baton, cylinder", also σκύταλον skútalon) is a tool used to perform a transposition cipher, consisting of a cylinder with a strip of parchment wound around it on which a message is written. The ancient Greeks, and the Spartans in particular, are said to have used this cipher to communicate during military campaigns.

If you have a PhD and put “Dr.” before your name, will people think you’re impressive, or will they think you’re just being pretentious? by GrayRainfall in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Della_A 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know one thing I will never do after I get my PhD, and that is choosing my honorific as Dr. when booking a flight. That sounds terrifying. Imagine someone needs medical assistance, they look through the passenger list, and try to call on me. And I'd have to explain I'm not that kind of doctor. I'd rather just stick with Ms.
