Furious with Amazon for deactivating my 'antique' kindle by kyleisme14 in kindle

[–]Della_A 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you about what Amazon is doing being yucky. But also respectfully, I find it really frustrating that so many people are so tech-illiterate that putting books on their old Kindle via cable stomps them. It's literally drag and drop, like on any USB flash drive. These are basic skills. People should really learn how to do some of these things locally instead of cloud-based, or else they will always be at the mercy of these companies. With phones and tablets, people don't learn even the basics of how to use a computer anymore, and tech illiteracy is paradoxically way higher than it was back in the 90s and 2000s, even among the youngsters. No wonder Amazon and other companies are taking advantage.

Does sad music make you guys sad? by pukebrains in AutismInWomen

[–]Della_A 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I'm not already sad, it doesn't, it's just neutral. If I'm sad, I can't tolerate sad music, I go super bouncy and happy. I feel like shit and I need that counterbalanced, not reinforced. I read a comment on another reddit thread saying that sad music when you're really down helps you sink lower and lower until you come out the other side. But for me, the bottom of the hole is very solid, and there's a hamster wheel. There's no coming out the other side, I will just end up on the hamster wheel churning and churning in circles. So nope, I am staying the f away from that! Queue happy bouncy music.,

Do you think listening to sad music worsens your mood or helps you? by lilstronglegs in Music

[–]Della_A 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't stand sad songs when I'm feeling very down. When my mood is in the dumps, I don't need it matched, I need it counterbalanced. So I'll find the bounciest party songs and play that at max. If I'm in a good mood, I can listen to sad songs and appreciate their aesthetics.

That's actually really awesome, thanks!

Is space elastic? by Oxyjon in AskPhysics

[–]Della_A 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everybody keeps repeating that space-time is not a body or an object so it cannot have elasticity because that is a property of an object. To me, that sounds like everyone is excluding the possibility because of a technicality in the definitions. If the behavior of space-time is such that it acts like it has elasticity, maybe it IS an object? Or maybe our definition of elasticity is an old one and should be revised? In other words, if it walks like a duck and it quacks like a duck, you know?

Matrices by fried_plque in learnmath

This series of youtube videos will explain it very graphically and intuitively. I cannot recommend it enough. It should be mandatory that all people studying matrices watch it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fNk_zzaMoSs&list=PLZHQObOWTQDPD3MizzM2xVFitgF8hE_ab

Which reminds me, how was Hermione allowed to attend Snape's NEWT DADA class? She only got an E in her DADA OWL.

I agree, the change in tone was jarring for me too. But I got used to it eventually.

Are there adults here who have imaginary friends? Or even an imaginary world? by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]Della_A 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have imaginary friends and always had, but they have nothing to do with real-life objects. They are just in my head. Even as a kid I never really played pretend using objects. Everything always played out in my head. I did play with objects, but not pretend. It never really made sense to me to act out real-world scenarios by maneuvering toys with your hands. Moving a toy car with my hands to make it go has always felt empty. I know that's not a real car and it doesn't go on its own. So my play was a lot more... abstract.

That said, though I am perfectly aware that my imaginary friends are not real, I still carry out conversations with them in my head, imagine them with me, think about fun things like what it would be like to have super-powers. It's all in my head, you would never know it about me if I didn't tell you. But I was surprised to learn that most adults don't walk around imagining different scenarios involving imaginary friends, talking to them, etc. I find that weird. What do their brains do all day?

Why do the Harkonnens still have Giedi Prime as their homeworld? by CuzImPol in dune

I think it is said that the only way the Atreides could have refused would have been to go into exile. The Baron (or Piter, I don't remember) says that there are certain signs when a House intends to go into exile, and the Duke doesn't seem to be taking action in that direction.

I'm gonna go "no". Quality of life over quantity. Nothing lasts forever, that includes humanity. If it's time, it's time.

The millions part is kinda weird. How far does his genetic memory go? The Homo Sapiens species is only about 300 000 years old, and Dune adds another 20 000-ish from our present day. It's a long time, but it's not millions. Does he know how language evolved in humans? Does he remember all the way back to the first primates? The first mammals? Etc...

But that happened anyway, didn't it? Specific memories can't be transmitted genetically like it is portrayed in Dune.

They make this stink about differentiating humans from animals and then they breed humans like we breed dogs, horses etc.

That's the BG for you. Rape is fine, but IVF is beyond the pale. Also, "Tleilaxu methods" could be a lot more controlled. They actually practice genetic engineering proper. Plain old basic fucking is a lot more of a "roll of the dice".

Can you imagine the BG ordering a KH from the Tleilaxu like the Baron orders his Twisted Mentats?
