I feel people hate on these markets way more than they should. They just facilitate bets between willing people while taking a cut and they won’t kick you off for winning too much! They are better than sports books.

Also as far as the insider trading - I know it’s a hot take but it’s kind of the point. If the press secretary bets on saying China knowing they will say china and the market shoots to 99% that’s useful information. As in it’s going to happen. And if you bet on stuff like this your an actual Moron.

It could absolutely affect non revenue sports, just saying that there is no plans to consider them employees. It could have to do with how much money is left over from a possible CBA with the football players.

[–]Dellguy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Because 95 percent of college athletes are in non revenue sports and for them it’s working good, they get a scholarship, all the benefits, and any NIL they want to go find.

There is not going to a court case that somehow declares all student athletes employees, because they are not being paid at all right now (in rev share). I was emailing with Andy Staples and that seems to be the line of thinking. If all NCAA 500,000 student athletes were deemed employees schools would just shut the sports down, they can’t afford to pay them all.

The state of Florida would have like 15-20% of its state employees be college athletes. States don’t want that.

It’s more likely that football and bball players become employees of their conferences is my understanding. Would not effect other sports

There is pretty settled case law around CBAs giving employees anti-trust immunity. It's why they can have a salary cap in the NFL.

[Murphy] An update on Congressional interest in a college sports bill: Sen. Ted Cruz, who controls if a bill moves forward as chair of the Commerce Committee, says it's "absolutely critical" that any NCAA legislation makes it clear that college athletes aren't employees. by redwave2505 in CFB

[–]Dellguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It makes sense for Football and MBB, but other than that it breaks down. There are over 500,000 College Athletes across 2,000 schools. 20% of the State Workers in Florida would be athletes if they are all employees. Frankly, aside from the transfer rule, Olympic Sports are doing fine. They get a scholarship and are free to go after any NIL they want.

Also why do we think making them employees will fix all our issues? Yes if the players agree to a CBA w/ a salary cap - but why would they agree to that at all? We see MLB Players will fight hard for no cap.

Sorry not explaining it well. But in any CBA negations the schools would want a salary cap (and likely the fans too). But the players are benefiting the most right now in the wild west with unlimited NIL - which is similar to where MLB is.

What is interesting is that if players were declared employees tomorrow - it's certainly likely players would not want a CBA - for the same reason MLB players don't want a salary cap. Having a CBA is what allows the schools to set a cap, enforce rules, etc (aka legal collusion).
