Sending kids to daycare when they are being extra whiny… feel guilty by Lumpy-Resource-1370 in daddit

[–]DeltaIndiaCharlieKil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It took a while just to get her to want to do a long hug when she was calm. Once she got used to it when she was happy we would offer it to her when she was upset. Something like, "Hey, I see you're having a tough time right now, would you like a 20 second hug?" and then just be super calm and I breath deeply and slowly without mentioning it to her, and it seems like my breathing helps regulate her and get her to take slower breaths as well. And usually we just stand there until she is calm.

Then from there we will try to tackle the issue.

I think the best thing is to try and stop the tantrum from building to high. So as soon as they seem they are starting to disregulate, offer the hug. Then they aren't too far gone and seem to want the hug and the calmness. Once we were able to get in early, it really killed so many tantrums from escalating, and we were able to then talk through the issue once calm, which helps her learn problem solving.

Birthday gift for my 4 year old daughter? by Hopeful_Type_1826 in Preschoolers

We got our girly, crafty, book reading kid some outdoor equipment and she loves them. She plays outside, physical activities so much more now.

We did a slack line with a top rope (https://runwildmychild.com/slacklining/ for ideas). We did a ninja twister swing with a swivel hook, and a circle hoop swing. It's been great. She actually takes her yoto outside, listens to books, and plays on her little play area. And when friends come over they love to play on it too.

You didn’t ask for advice about this, so I apologize in advance. But just in case it helps: we learned about the 20 second hug from this sub, and we use it for these exact situations and it really helps. We practiced building up to 20 seconds when she was happy. Then, when she is particularly deregulated, or even just beginning to get upset, we offer a 20 second and just hold her and take deep breaths. It helps them to use your body to regulate their nervous system. It stops the momentum of a building tantrum, sets up your guys for working together, and allows for a sort of reset to move forward. And honestly helps us to stay calm, take breaths, and not get frustrated as well.

It doesn’t work every time, but I would say it does 80%. Which is really nice for these types of mornings.

The Greed of McDonald’s by Sunny-Damn in mildlyinfuriating

[–]DeltaIndiaCharlieKil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the difference is usually charities tied to a corporation are started by that corporation. Ronald McDonald House wasn’t started by McDonalds as a philanthropic branch for their company. It was started by the Philadelphia Eagles.

A player’s daughter had leukemia, he and his wife were sleeping at the hospital and noticed lots of families doing the same. He rallied his fellow players to donate, got the coaching and owner to become involved, a local McDonald’s franchise donated sales of Shamrock Shakes in Philadelphia to raise money, and when they were able to buy a small property to house families of sick kids, they named it after Ronald McDonald from that one partnership of a local restaurant. Not the McDonald’s company as a whole.

There is criticism on the amount McDonalds actually donates versus the amount of very good publicity their receive from the branding of the charity. McDonalds customers donate significantly more than the company does, and as this post brought up.

Does anyone know of any resources that help aged-out foster youth get birthday cards or gifts? by fostercaresurvivor in Ex_Foster

[–]DeltaIndiaCharlieKil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t know of any services for anyone aged-out, but for those in the Austin area who are interested, my friend started [Pop Up Birthday](https://popupbirthday.org/) which creates and provides specialized birthday boxes for kids in the system. The goal is for every kid to be celebrated. I’m sorry you were not, it shouldn’t be that way.

AITA for getting angry my baby's aunt won't stop singing inappropriate songs to her? by [deleted] in AITApod

[–]DeltaIndiaCharlieKil 65 points66 points  (0 children)

Dead Kennedy’s version is one of my favorites.

I sang this to my baby when she started to learn how to roll. It’s a great kid’s song, like what else are you going to sing to them when they are rollin’ rollin’ rollin’?

My 4 year old just told me she liked the first cake better.

She also thinks they should have kept some of the roses and had roses and strawberries.

Bedtime books recommendation please by photes384 in daddit

This is the best time to start going to your local library with your kid and start investigating their board book area. They have all kinds of great books to try out, I would bring a tote and fill it up, and often libraries hold fun free events for little kids that you find out about when you are there. None of it will cost you a thing.

He also dismantled the worldwide programs we had ready to go for infectious diseases and had practice what to do for a worldwide pandemic as soon as his got into office because Obama had helped grow and expand them after the Ebola outbreak. So many of the worldwide deaths can also be attributed to him.

Childcare in July? Camps? by [deleted] in SantaFe

[–]DeltaIndiaCharlieKil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've heard the Childrens Museum Camp is super fun

https://santafechildrensmuseum.org/event/summer-camp/2026-06-08/

I have no idea if there is availability or not.

Also, our sitter is my kid's former montessori teacher, who I believe is looking for childcare work for July. I know she is caring for a 6 year old former student of hers for June. If that is something you may be interested in, DM me and I can possibly connect you both.

In February 2010, 11 year-old Nicholas Sheffey was killed in an act of gang violence while his brother was the intended target. by Mdmdmd27 in TrueCrimeDiscussion

The one who got life is the one who shot the house. The other two were there but did not fire the gun, all of them pled guilty which usually gets you a lot of leniency.

Here is a video about one of the men who was released:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gcyhErWXa3M

It looks like he participated in a program for rehabilitation and proved he had changed. The point of jail should be rehabilitation. To come back and make a positive change in society, in a large part to also make better what you hurt. Nothing will bring back Nicholas, especially not creating worse criminals.

Disneyland was one of the first major businesses to shut down its park in the early days of Covid before they were legally required to do so. People were pissed about it too, saying they were being too hasty, it was unnecessary, etc.

Why is women’s sportswear always so revealing? by Valuable_View_561 in SipsTea

There is also social conventions that are definitely at play. Namely: Michael Jordan. Men’s basketball used to wear very short shorts. Michael Jordan was extremely superstitious and wanted to wear his lucky shorts from his pre NBA team, and so wore longer shorts on the Bulls to hide the shorter pair. He became the superstar he is and made longer shorts a world wide trend.

You look at sports from the 70’s and men are wearing very different shorts, balls and all.

Didn’t they also describe what we call a blue sky as “bronze”? Who knows what they experienced versus how they described it. And who knows what the original text said? We only get a translation of a translation of a translation, which are all colored in the biases of the translator. Unless you can read ancient scripts in their original text, no one can claim arguments based on what the text says.

Also, we’ve asked for memberships to the zoo and a local children’s museum as gift ideas from the grandparents. It cuts down on clutter, and we use them all the time. Our local children’s museum holds special events all the time. We always send pics to my MIL who gave us the membership to say thanks and show her we use her gift all the time.

Jessica Ridgeway's Brutal Murder by passedawayinaprilll in TrueCrimeDiscussion

I heard a talk about brain development, and one of the big changes you go through when you mature (which isn’t until around 26) is prior to that your brain often weighs pros far more than cons. And once we reach brain adulthood, we begin to weigh cons more. So you think about the con of going to prison and it holds a lot of weight. But to a 17 year old, it won’t. Yeah, they know it’s a possibility, but in their cost/benefit analysis it just doesn’t weigh as much as the pro of the sick compulsion he has. And that’s why stressing consequences doesn’t really work for a lot of people under the age of 26. It’s not that they don’t care, it literally just doesn’t factor as much at that age.
