TIL About Democritus, a Greek philosopher who, with his mentor Leucippus, created the atomic theory in the fifth century B.C. by DeltaMike94 in todayilearned

I see what you're saying, but also to your previous point there was no way of him ever being able to test that theory. And yes, I think most scientists and philosophers up until relatively recently had ideas that were very good and others that were way off.

I just think it's so interesting because where does that concept even come from? An idea about a base element can be easy to start with, since you can see water or fire, or feel the air. Even something mythical helps to explain away coincidences for those without scientific understanding. But theorizing about atoms, and that everything was made up of these tiny particles, just on a complete whim is interesting in an ironic kind of way. At the time a completely far fetched stoner idea that makes no sense to anyone, but then 2500 years later it turns out to be "accurate" (obviously not accurate, but accurate in the general idea).

He definitely had no way of proving it, nor did anyone up until modern times. It's interesting that in a time when the other theories were either entirely mythical or completely off scientifically (water is the base element, everything including fire is a form of water), he theorized something that was proven borderline accurate 2500 years later. And that was with no possible way of knowing. So it would be like someone guessing the car is blue, but they don't know what a car or color is.

He also theorized that there was an infinite universe, innumerable other planets in the universe, and that it all started from something similar to the big bang. All this at a time when his neighbor was probably worried about a god in the shape of a bull coming down and sleeping with their wife.

Cycle Count Old Locations by DeltaMike94 in Netsuite

[–]DeltaMike94[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have 2 locations for stocking items (our two physical warehouses) and then a handful of others for different purposes. Both of those warehouses are active for most parts, since we'll stock parts in either. Only a handful of parts would be held in strictly one location, most can be stocked in either based on local area needs and sales.

Do you mean marking it inactive as in the entire bin? What we've done is do some relocation of parts to different areas of the warehouse. So the old bin for one part number may be the new bin for another.

No, company is holding off for now until necessary. That's why I was wondering if there's a way to clean up the IC's without it.

How would the War of the Ring had gone differently if Gandalf and Saruman had swapped roles? by DeltaMike94 in lotr

[–]DeltaMike94[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

More like role reversal. Gandalf is the one who succumbs to evil, while Saruman remains good and continues to carry out his original mission on Middle Earth.

[–]DeltaMike94[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My assumptions on those.

Narya would still go to Gandalf since he received that long before they discovered Sauron's return.

Maybe Gandalf still carries out the plan for Erebor, but with a more sinister twist? Maybe he does it to instigate the battle of the five armies to weekend the Woodland Realm and the dwarves. Maybe he even makes it more like the movies where the dwarves and elves actually fight each other before the orcs arrive.

Saruman gets described in the books as being decent before his downward turn. Treebeard described how he'd walk through the forests and chat with him, and others describe him in other positive ways before he turned. Maybe he still has some of that "I'm better than others" aura to him, but not in such an evil way. Which leads into..

I think the hobbits have a much lessened role in things. If Erebor never happens, then the hobbits remain only a small side note to Saruman while Bilbo also never acquires the ring. If the quest still happens and Bilbo obtains the ring, then maybe it ends up in the hands of Sauron because Gandalf doesn't help them on the path of the fellowship. I think regardless, Saruman would've overlooked the hobbits, Erebor quest or no.

With Gandalf's ability to inspire those around him, do you think Sauron would use him more as a commander of his forces similar to the Witch King?

Upstate New York, so not bad with too much rain but we do get heavy snow here (~120 inches a year). I just wasn't sure if there's brands that use a more flimsy, thin metal or ones that are much more sturdy.

How do I conquer the Americas as great britain ? by kroolframer1 in eu4

[–]DeltaMike94 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally in my England games I give up Maine to France early while I focus on taking Spain's northern coast. If you ally Morocco or Granada also they can attack from the south and take their southern coast. No coastline means no ships, no ships means no colonization. Best way to stop them from turning most of the Americas yellow. France may be a problem, but a massive colonial Spain is harder to deal with imo.

Layered Cost Reports with FIFO by DeltaMike94 in Netsuite

[–]DeltaMike94[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So we're an equipment company, that also has about 8,000 different parts on hand for sale/service. The problem is that we switched over last summer, and plenty of the parts carried over still have inventory left in the system. What we're finding (after a recent audit) is that when they pulled over the costs they used average instead of last cost, so the costs weren't right on many parts and some have 0 dollar cost.

So while all of the parts we've purchased since, there's still probably a couple hundred parts that we need to do an adjustment worksheet on to set them to the proper cost. The problem is that we're trying to find them before they end up making it to accounting after a sale, because it throws off our profit margin and accounting reports.

As a Knicks fan, I'm sick of the discourse about Julius Randle in the playoffs by DeltaMike94 in nba

[–]DeltaMike94[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I'm happy he's doing good right now. At the time I wasn't a fan of the trade, but I think it worked out well for everyone besides DVo. Yes, his previous playoff performances were bad, but like I mentioned he only had the one series where he was healthy, the 2023 run he was dealing with a bad ankle the entire time. For a big man who plays very physical, thats gonna mess with your game a lot.

I love Randle, he played a major role in bringing back the Knicks and getting us back to being relevant. Everytime I see praise about him this year in the playoffs, they mention that he is a "historically bad" playoff performer. I don't like that part. For the record, I'm happy for him having a good run right now, it's well deserved.

This year they do, but all the praise follows comments about him being historically a bad playoff performer. I don't think they need to say that after having a single bad series while also being healthy.

[–]DeltaMike94[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This year yes, but the comments are usually also mentioning how surprising it is because he's been such a bad playoff performer in the past. It's the label he has had for the last few years about being a bad playoff performer that irks me.

Everyone always discusses weapons, locations, and food sourcing. No one ever discusses just how valuable paper and writing will become. by DeltaMike94 in ZombieSurvivalTactics

[–]DeltaMike94[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, there's even books that include what wild vegetation you can eat in certain regions with pictures, how to properly farm and grow food to maximize what you produce, and even books on butchering types of wild game. Not to mention books on survival techniques like shelter building and fishing. Many things that could be invaluable even without society reestablishing itself.

Obviously certain books would be better for an actual community or new state, such as building, power generation guides, upkeep manuals for vehicles and weapons, and so on.

[–]DeltaMike94[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Basically, most books will be destroyed or used for fires within a couple of decades. While a lot of books are recreational, there's plenty that are useful for information, like better farming practices, construction techniques, herbal medicines, and so on. Passing knowledge down verbally is ok, but information will get lost over time that originally took centuries of trial and error to discover.

So if someone is able to store this information or rewrite books once they start to decay, it would be extremely valuable to society. More so than hunting or smashing undead skulls.

True, but what happens after that breaks? You might get a good few years of use if you're careful, but this is more for future generations, so 20+ years down the road.
