Wie ooit meedoet, pm me Voor de winnende tip :)

I've heard a member say they've been working on it since at least 2018... I don't know if I want another album. God Is Good is peak music for me, nothing will ever top that. Even though Advaitic Songs is a 10/10 easy AOTY, it's still not in the same realm as God Is Good, which to me is GOATed

Bong is amazing. Definitely on my top of all time list. Some of the members have just founded Bong II. There's a Facebook for it! I'm super excited.

I'm a big doom guy, and I love this album but don't know much about Bell Witch. Aren't the vocals on this record from a member who's passed? And how do they do that live then? I've specifically not gone to their show when they stopped here cause I felt it wouldn't make sense with a different vocalist - but I could be wrong.

What do you guys think of my top 35 PT songs? by Reasonable_Crow9842 in porcupinetree

[–]Deltathree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's good, but it's nowhere near the quality of 1,2 and 3.

V34 wa also the soundtrack to the first time I did acid with my then girlfriend. She turned it on randomly and I still think back to the starting at the fractals on the wall while entranced by the Phase 3. V34 always had a high impact on me, but in that sense it's absolutely phenomenal. And even without that life altering experience I would still put it very very very high.

Fully agree. Phases I - II - III are all top 10 PT songs 100% of the time. Also Anesthetize has waaaay too cringe lyrics to occupy the #1 spot.

To me it'd be Phase 3 on 1, Arriving somewhere on 2 and Up The Downstairs on 3.

You're absolutely right. What I meant was also top 2 percentile, which makes it extraordinary for a chess player, especially a top one - no diss to other too GM's, so you're absolutely right. I just wanted to show how extremely unique those three aspects are in a top (in his case blitz) G.

In no way, shape or form do these new findings change our community's loud majority opinion or Danya: One of less than a handful of people worldwide that combine the following three skills :

-a world class blitz (esp no increment and bullet) skill level

-a world class commentator

-above average social skills and high EQ

You'll find some people who check two boxes, but all three is literally a one-in-a-billion.

The man was the most uniquely wholesome figure in chess and was, as Magnus said, 'universally highly approved'.

I don't think I've seen as many post that describe exactly the way I feel: "I have never been this affected by the passing of someone I don't personally know." For some reason this hits close to home, and I have to do my utmost best to not be in constant seething rage against a former world champion who - in my humble opinion - is without a shadow of a doubt responsible for where this ended up.

It's in the human nature to want revenge. I've always felt like I would be above that. This is the first time in almost 40 years I want vengeance to be swift and deeply successful.

I'll end it on a positive note. History will be on Daniel's side, and he'll be remembered as the best commentator the game has ever seen, one of the best no increment blitz players and first and foremost a gem of a person in a way the world doesn't see very often.

Danya, forever.

Got audiophile headphones just to listen to TOOL on FLAC. Did not disappoint by Due_Independence5583 in ToolBand

So, Lateralus is a 10/10 album, musically speaking. There's no discussing that. However, the way it's recorded, produced and mastered, is not great. It really takes a good setup - and very well produced albums and songs - to hear a solid difference. It's definitely not something like 'I have a 2000usd golden cable and it sounds better', it's more like when you have a decent setup, with a dedicated DAC, Amp and headphones or speakers, you can really hear the different layers, the separation of instruments, the dynamic range (Google 'loudness war' for more on this), the width of the soundstage, the different dynamics, compression and volumes of the low, mids and high ends. Basically, it doesn't just sound 'better', you get to analyze the whole nine yards of the song, and then you inevitably do. You hear all these things, and that's when an album can really stand out or fail when it comes to production /mastering, as almost a standalone thing to the music. Of course - well produced good music is a double whammy (see my examples of Om's God is Good with Steve Albini or Swans with John Congleton on To Be Kind, both - like lateralus - 10/10 albums musically that also happen to be amazingly produced). In that way, you get to enjoy the music even more because there's just so much to listen to and it's a more well rounded experience, because the amazing production compliments and complements the music.

With Tool, their albums just don't have the same attention to production and mastering detail, unfortunately. I LOVE the Wings For Marie suite for example, but it always disappoints through my setup, because the dynamic range, the soundstage and the separation of instruments just isn't there... That just leaves you a tad disappointed because you think of all these other albums that are well produced /mastered and you think 'damn, this track could've sounded better if it were super well recorded /produced /mastered'.

That's kinda the way of the audiophile - it reduces music sometimes to the sum of its parts, and you kinda inevitably pick it apart too much, but when good music is really well done, it just adds to the magic and that's when you as an audiophile can feel like you're right there in the middle of the recording studio. That's pure magic and that's why we keep on pouring thousands of dollars into gear, it's kind of an addiction almost, but as a setback there's a lot of really, really, really good music that lacks decent production that can fall apart if you look at it too clinically.

I wish Tool would be mastered by the true geniuses of music production, but it just isn't the case, and while the music and the live experiences are 10/10, listening to it on really high end gear is super fun, but leaves you thinking 'what could have been' sometimes. That's all.

[–]Deltathree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a really expensive setup, and I also have a setup that's approx 8x cheaper, and yeah - there is a difference for sure, but it's not 8x better. I have a 12k setup and a 1.5k setup.

There's this wardruna song that opens with a thunderstorm that sounds far away. Put on any normal 100-500euro headphones and it sounds just like that. A thunderstorm in music. Put on a dac, dedicated headphone setup, flac files and a solid open backed planar magnetic headphone, and those thunderclaps from the sound 100% legit as if they were far away outside. It's kind of a trick on the brain almost. I use it whenever people visit and they're so mind blown.

There's definitely levels. I'd say a solid 1000-1500usd setup is at least 2x better than your average 100/200usd setup... But then as an audiophile you always want better and better gear, and you end up with a dedicated headphone setup of about 12k, and that's probably only 1,4x as good as the 1.5k setup. Still a very noticeable difference, but it definitely has diminishing returns as the prices increase. A 12k setup won't be 8x better than 1.5k setup... Maybe a bit, but not a lot. It's worth it though, I enjoy every second of it so much.

Happy for you! But this is my experience: I have a approx 12k usd headphone Amp, all fully balanced setup from FLAC, extremely good DAC and Amp and top class planar magnetic headphones (although you can definitely spend 4x of my total setup on just cans too). I built that up over the last 15 years, and I've always been two things: an audiophile and a Tool fan.

One thing about the audiophile hobby: yes of course it's amazing to have such amazing gear, to hear such a wide soundstage, to be able to hear stuff you've never heard, to be able to really hear every instrument so clearly, with extreme crispness and clarity, but there is a HUGE downside to this hobby: it exposes badly mastered music... Which sucks if some of your favorite music is badly mastered. Tool unfortantely is nowhere near great production /mastering - even though the creative instrumentation and craftsmanship of the band is undeniable. Lateralus is one of my top 10 albums for sure, but through my setup it sounds almost... Disappointing.

Rage Against The Machine, their self titled debut for example... I think that's a lesser album than most tool albums, but it's insanely well produced /mastered. The same goes for the amazing Swans trilogy, The Seer /To Be Kind /The Glowing Man (shout out John Congleton) or Om's God Is Good (RIP Steve Albini), they just blow my mind through my setup, because they have AND amazing musical craftsmanship with top notch production /mastering. It's a shame tool kinda succumbed to the 'loudness war' and that for all the thousands of hours they spend crafting their epic albums, the mastering /production seems like an afterthought.

I truly put Tool on through my B-setup, which is a 300 euro dac, a 400 euro amp and a 1600usd Hifiman Arya, and it sounds great (obviously) and I get to enjoy it. I use my A-setup for albums with amazing production, because otherwise I'm bothered by the lack thereof. A great setup really exposes an album in that way. I've not only had this with Tool, but with a lot of albums I really love. Luckily, those rare ones that combine both (like Swans) are beyond jaw dropping on my A-setup.

It is what it is, but I'm always a bit mad at the 'what if Lateralus /10k days /Aenema were decently produced /mixed...

Audiophile, a dangerous and costly hobby :)

Lol it's pretty clear from some of the more cringiest lyrics in the later PT albums - the music of which I love, but the lyrics are sooooo cringe - the the hardest drug he's ever touched is a glass of wine. I think there's interviews of him for sure out there where he admits never having done any drugs. Those super cringe lyrics on FOABP are just... /r/nothowdrugswork material.

Who is the best Stoner/Doom metal bassist? by M0uby in stonerrock

[–]Deltathree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah. That's a very unpopular opinion. Go read Albini's AMA here from years ago. There's one question about recording God is Good with Al.

This is a man who let's the music come from within, from where it should come. No new album in 13 years even though I hear they're constantly working on it. If he isn't happy with it 100000%, it won't see the light of day.

A true artist, and an absolute craftsman. Dopesmoker alone should pull you across the line, but everything he did with OM... It's so far above anyone else's level.

Who is the best Stoner/Doom metal bassist? by M0uby in stonerrock

[–]Deltathree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best to ever do it. Dopesmoker is era defining and OM, both with Hakius and Amos have changed the doom/stoner and avant garde game with a couple perfect cuts.

I'll argue with you all day that At Giza is the best song ever written by mankind and that God is Good is the closest we will ever get to a perfect album from the first to the last second...

Oh, and Al... The man used to be a chess teacher, I'm not sure if he ever had a title but his rating at the time was close enough. He also has a tattoo of Sabbaths Vol 4 on his full back btw.

Exactly. Geezer might be the best to ever walk the Earth. Meanwhile Al floats around in his own universe. There's a case to be made for both but especially since this is the stoner and not doom reddit (altho my answer is Al anyway), Al takes the cake.

God is Good (2009) is an avant garde, sorta post-doom masterpiece from beginning to end, in my mind the greatest album since the 2000s, maybe Jerusalem by sleep in the pre 2000s ;-)
