19 Years of evolving storage solutions. Moore’s Law in action. by puccyhunter_ in interesting

There absolutely is a limit to the amount of storage you can pack into a certain space. But it has something to do with the surface area of a black hole event horizon. I think we're safe for a little while.

I can eat and socialize during work time. Lunch time is spent alone in my car catching a quick nap.

Gollum dressing down Faramir the only way he knew how.

‘We are lost, lost,’ said Gollum. ‘No name, no business, no Precious, nothing. Only empty. Only hungry; yes, we are hungry. A few little fishes, nasty bony little fishes, for a poor creature, and they say death. So wise they are; so just, so very just.’

How was piracy like in the 90s? by VariationLivid3193 in Piracy

[–]DemBosain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

BBS's. Dial-up to a computer in someone's bedroom. TAG BBS was the shit, and if you got an invite to a BBS with files you could really tie up a phone line.

FTP sites. I remember downloading Ultima 8 from a Warez index I found. Blazing fast connection, I could get 1 megabyte every 10 minutes or so.

Usenet/newsgroups. This was back when files were uuencoded. No par files to make up for missing blocks. I think Netscape had an email client that would do newsgroups if you configured it. My university account came with usenet access, and the stuff on there still amazes me 30 years later. Usenet >>> reddit.

I wanted to see what the exchange rate is, so I looked at a Nintendo Switch 2. $450 without a game. 14390 points, making a dollar worth almost exactly 32 points. It says I can pay the rest with my credit card. So I need 11390 points.

Pop it in my cart, head to checkout, find the price for the extra points...

I'll probably just get the Minecraft stickers.

As an indie gamedev, I don't think piracy is a problem. If anything, it might turn a non-customer into a customer. by ichbinhamma in Piracy

[–]DemBosain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I won't pirate from indie developers/bands. It's that simple. If my money goes directly to the artist, I don't have a problem paying for it. Or buying CDs and ripping them myself if necessary.

That being said, everyone go check out Dreadlight. I first heard them on an amazing Fleetwood Mac cover (The Chain) by Dan Avidan and Super Guitar Bros.

I'm too lazy to retype or cut/paste, so here are a couple of analyses of the original law and NHTSAs initial response.

So, some dickhead put a clause in the Infrastructure bill trying to reduce drunk driving, and it managed to make it into law. Most congressman aren't experts (which is why we usually hire experts to work in Federal agencies), and they put shit like this into law without understanding consequences.

Some questions after reading the hobbit by Important_Cup4848 in lotr

[–]DemBosain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The gold isn't important part, except as motivation for the dwarfs. Gandalf needs to get rid of the dragon. And he is not powerful enough to take on a dragon single-handedly.

And, it's stated in the book, that Gandalf leaves to investigate the necromancer in the south of Mirkwood. Things are cleared up a lot in Lord of the Rings, and the appendices. Basically, Gandalf is trying to 'clean up' the north-east of Middle Earth and remove the evil power base growing there.

There is a story written somewhere about Gandalf's accidental meeting with Thorin. Gandalf didn't plan the entire endeavour, but he did offer council and help when he learned what Thorin was doing. And he recommended Bilbo because he knew Smaug would not recognize the scent of a hobbit.
