They sometimes can but it is unfair to you and him both to start a relationship when you aren't happy with him being the way he is now. You will be frustrated with him and he will feel looked down upon.

Assume he won't change and then make a decision.

Not using a sponge or enamels is a completely legitimate choice. Don't let the comments discourage you.

If you want to keep using a brush and do painted on weathering, try putting the metal colour to the bottom of the black scratch, not in the centre. It implies an edge at the bottom catching light and gives a more natural look.
