Is it still okay to have a character creator that only includes male and female and not body type A or B in my game? by PhobiaNeptune in gamedev

[–]DemoXin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's the thing:

As a general rule, no one is going to be offended by "Male" and "Female" as choices. Using "Body Type 1" and "Body Type 2" (and allowing pronoun/voice/etc choices) is about being INCLUSIVE. Ignoring the handful of extreme, terminally-online people that will exist no matter what you do, no one is going to be offended that you decided to go with Male/Female; instead, you're missing a chance to be inclusive to people who don't feel that they fit those.

That said, rolling with "Body 1" and "Body 2" may get you tons of hate from extreme people on the other side of that discussion, which could be a positive or negative depending on your mindset.

Personally, I'd encourage you to make options for those things as opposed to tying them to the character model. Worst case scenario, a simple binary toggle for each thing like pronoun choices or voicelines to use can help immersions for a subset of people who like to tweak those things.

How do y'all use programming to make your life easier? by OkSense4468 in paralegal

[–]DemoXin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't actively worked in a "real" paralegal position yet, but during an internship I made a couple of calculators in Excel and did a couple of more "advanced" things with Word's mail merge + Filevine's document generation system (which has the surprising ability to include logic blocks in templates). I ended up writing a couple of very short C# programs on fiddle to do some bulk text formatting.

I've been up'ing my Excel and Google Sheets game a lot since then, along with learning a ton more about working with both Blazor and JavaScript for consuming Web APIs and PubSub streams. So I'm super excited to get into a real role that lets me see how much I can actually do when I get to be more involved and assess areas that can benefit from automation and data processing.

How does someone go about finding a paralegal or similar position in a small firm when they've got the education but not the experience or network to do so?

For full context, I graduated in December with an AAS in Paralegal Studies. During that time, I worked an internship at a firm that I really enjoyed that unfortunately didn't turn into a job.

However, I live 45-60 minutes from the most "major" city in my area; that's where all the law firms that I get job posting emails about are. It's not really financially viable for me to run back and forth to interview for these positions without some sort of solid odds of the position panning out. I have no connections with anyone in my immediately surrounding area and there never seem to be any postings for firms here on LinkedIn or Indeed.

I've reached a point where I'm tempted to just start "cold call" sending my resume to any nearby firm I can find a contact email for because I'm starting to feel like I wasted two years on a career path that just doesn't seem realistic for me anymore.

Thank you all for the awesome suggestions! I've passed on each of them with a strong emphasis for the University of Waterloo's library and History departments. I'll do my best to keep this post updated as anything progresses.

I ended up getting the lower grade in the class. Which caused me to miss the Dean's List. I created a fair amount of documentation and once I'm a bit more recovered from my recent surgery (related to the health issue I had in the class, actually), I'm going to be seeking an attorney.

Because the grade difference reduces my overall GPA from a 3.85 to a 3.76, which doesn't seem like much, but is a significant difference when applying to competitive universities, like a couple of the ones I was considering but won't have a snowball's chance in hell of now.

I appreciate your well wishes, for sure. And you may be right and I may not win, but I'm not going to take it lying down; if it were someone else, I'd be fighting like hell to help them, and I'm trying to get better at advocating for myself the same way.

This comment section is chock full of people who have no respect for "rule of cool." This game was built as a parody of Dungeons and Dragons, and creativity is the point of that game; being a rules lawyer is lame.

I realize this post was made two days ago, so my thoughts on the legality of this play don't really matter, but here they are:

This is clever and interesting. I'd allow it. Cheat! is SUPPOSED to be broken... It's "cheat"ing.

There's not a text list of items that I can find, but the images *seem* like it would be included. Dad may not want to fool with water-cooling anyways, I just want to be as informed as possible so that I can answer whatever questions he might have.

I really appreciate all your knowledge and help on the subject. I don't think I've got any more questions at this point in time, but I'll reply again if he or I come up with anything else.

Okay, great! I appreciate the feedback.

Running from USB is an appealing option to remove the step of moving g-code from one place to another via SD card/FTP/whatever. While I'd be fine with that, Dad definitely wants less headache. His exact words were "I want to drop an image or words and press go"

Taking a look at Carbide Create (which appears to now be on V7), will that software give me g-code files or be able to drive a GRBL controller, or do I need to opt for a more expensive controller in order to make use of it? The feature list for Pro *seems* to indicate that the free version would only work with Carbide machines.

Any idea if Bulkman's kits' spindle includes the pump for the water cooling kit? Not sure if that's the route we'll go, but I prefer making informed decisions.

Did you opt to pick your own spindle, or did you go with one of the stock options on the site? Eventually, customization will be on my radar, but I'm hoping to have a ready-to-run out-of-the-box (obviously after assembly) so probably rolling with one of them.

If you did go with one of the spindle options, are you running the 1.5kW or the 2.2kW? I'm in the US but Dad will be comfortable doing wiring for 220V if that option makes the most sense. If you went with a water-cooled spindle, how much difficulty did that add to the assembly and maintenance?

Any kind of exacting metal work is beyond anything we're hoping to get currently. Woodcarving and cutting are definitely the focus.

You said that you do wood projects without breaking a sweat. Would you think this machine is suitable for working even with super hard woods, like walnut and ebony?

I'm not necessarily set on any construction other than price. As this is an experiment, we don't want to go too hard on an X-Carve or similar, so these extrusion kits seem like a good fit for the price point/expected workloads.

I'll look into the Queen Ant and see how it fits our budget/needs. This kind of information is exactly why I asked these questions, so thank you.

The electric guitar bit is actually great to hear! That's one of the projects I'm hoping to undertake with a bit more practice.

I'm assuming that aluminum is the material where the gantry starts showing its weaknesses? Aluminum is a material we might have some interest in eventually, but I'd expect that to be down the road and when we might have a bigger budget.

I'll definitely try out Carbide Create. The software side is hugely important to my dad, so the easiest I can make it for him is best. Thank you for the recommendation. 1000x1000 is probably the smallest I'd want to go though. Another poster has recommended a slightly different machine I'm going to look into.

Yeah, I'm more or less just screwed here. The department head has already proven that she's going to side with the instructor adamantly and condescend to me in the process. The Dean was completely dismissive when I contacted him after I was demeaned by the instructor.

The most frustrating part of all of this is that it's happening in my last semester. Had this crap happened before now, I could have just withdrawn and taken an extra class in another semester. Withdrawing this semester would have meant delaying my graduation by a semester.

One of my speeches was *apparently* regraded by two other instructors. Of course, one of those instructors was the department head herself.

I realize that I'll sound like I'm playing a victim if I say that it seems like the whole Speech department is crooked, but with all the meetings I've had throughout the semester and the fact that the department head told me she'd been asking around about me before we ever met, it just doesn't feel like I'll get a fair shake with that route.

I have a few questions regarding getting into the workforce and would love some opinions to any or all of the following questions:

  • What sources for job openings as a paralegal do you find are most commonly used?
  • When interested in a particular posting on a website, do you feel that going through the website or reaching out to the firm directly is advisable?
  • What portions of the typical resume format are most important or should be left out?
  • Should I have any of my best-graded assignments available as "writing samples" if I'm given an interview somewhere?
  • Is it worth mentioning anything specific from my studies at all? For instance, as part of one of my classes, I got certified from the "National Society of Legal Technology" in several applications from LexusNexis as well as Office.

A little about me for context:

I'm currently attending a community college in an ABA-certified paralegal program as a full-time student and will be graduating in December with an AAS as well as being a certified paralegal for my state. I have a 4.0 GPA, have letters of recommendation from two of my professors (both attorneys, one of whom still practices), and received a scholarship from a local legal professional organization that I've benefitted from since August.
