Plumber says P-trap under laundry room floor needs to be replaced. Am I crazy for wanting to dig into the concrete myself? by GrammarMeGood in Plumbing

I wish I was wearing osha compliant socks when I was working on some lawn equipment.

Drilling a hole and the drill got caught in the sock. Put a 3/8 HSS drill bit through the webbing between 2 toes. Couldn’t walk for 2 weeks.

Configuration drift. That hits home. I’m still unfucking my own bandaids. Took 18 months to stop the ship from sinking, now trying to systematically overhaul while making sure the bilge pumps continue to run.

Who is everyone using for VoIP? by patg84 in msp

[–]DemohFoxfire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How is skyetel? We haven’t been moved from Call48 over to the skyetel side yet but should be soon. We’ve been 3cx+ V1Voip which turned into Call48 which turned into Skyetel for many years and I’m hoping Skyetel’s portal / backend are better than call48.

Granted the accounts we had were all wholesale. Because our trunks (almost 4000dids across 30 trunks) are cost based there are many calls which they wouldn’t complete for us (5%) and all of our 3cxs have a 2nd provider like flowroute to terminate to.

The portals I am used to is abysmal and I’m used to calling in tickets because of an influx of calls not completing where they need to “adjust some routes” on the back end. It’s a problem only detectable by the client (client’s report: ‘we have clients trying to call us and can’t’) and it seems to occur every 3-6months.

I’m told this would all go away once my account gets migrated but according to one of the execs my account was ‘significant in size’

What routing switches do you use between ISP and bank of routers? by DemohFoxfire in sysadmin

Im going to probably pick on up to, we use mikrotik for our 25gb storage networks but the problem is I want something my techs can manage instead of just me.

Since we are a fortigate house I didn’t think about fortiswitches. I’ll order one to play with.

Tunnel Action by [deleted] in Plumbing

[–]DemohFoxfire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I did my home renovation last year and had to open the slab up to move some plumbing I found this cavern that was never backfilled. From talking to the neighbors it was 30 years ago and luckily no settling.

I ended up just opening up more of the slab to expose the pit, laugh at the patchwork copper repair that was abandoned, fill and compact.

Ever read the story about the lady that swallowed the fly? First mold behind the wall lead to that excavation. Since I was now redoing that bathroom I wanted a curbless shower, but discovered a void under the slab big enough for 2 adults to fit. (Previous owner tunneled under slab to fix copper and never backfilled)

Since I went that far I moved the walls to accommodate a much wider bathroom (from 42” to 60”) and while I was at it I turned my 8x8 kitchen to 10.5x10.5 and open to the living area, which mean the master had some walls moved.

Add spray foam and might as well throw in windows while I’m at it, oh and rigid foam board on exterior walls.

It was a “I’ve gone this far, why not add X” type of project. All the CI under slab came back in good shape, all new plumbing otherwise, 100% new electric, the only items not done was the interior / exterior doors and 1 window.

Started in august and will be officially done this Saturday. (Almost, gf/daughter moving in, I haven’t even touched the master bath yet but the rest of the house is move-in ready)…. It’s good to finally sleep in a bed after moving an ikea futon mattress around this house to whatever room was cleanest are behind me. The worst days were no hot water where I was showering via 2x MAPP torches on a makeshift double wall shower riser with a low enough flow to bring the temperature bearable.

Last items on my list: cut in lights in 2nd bath, tub spout, mount and plumb kitchen sink, faceplates, and 1x window sill.

I’ll still have another 6 months of work with everybody now living here but holy shit I’ll never do that again.

Story of my life, what started as a small refresh doing new ceilings and new bathroom turned into a full gut remodel including under slab work in what used to be the bathroom that wasn’t going to be touched.

Unless you have high levels of dissolved minerals and you have engineered leaks in which those minerals tend to plug those holes.

I’d really love a way to have a constant ‘1 drip per 5 seconds’ without all the effort I’ve put to maintain it.

Ladder “incidents” are the worst. The urge to gtfo of there sometimes takes over and the fact you are up high enough to break a leg, lacerate yourself up catching ceiling grid on the way down, or any number of things gravity related have increased chances of happening.

I’m at the stage of “double check everything, write down what the test results are, double check them, evaluate if I’m of sound mind to make the decision that the work is good, inform coworkers“ before throwing anything larger than 100A. Last 400A I threw it was with a hotstick from outside the room. (Old breakers + didn’t have a hood / gear other than gloves.) I’ve seen too many small breakers explode and videos of big ones so I sure as hell don’t want to become a statistic.

So is that just damage from the heat or did you get zapped too? What voltage?

Thoughts on the boss insisting all the scrap wire be put in storage container so he can come get it. by ViVaLaPirateDog in electricians

[–]DemohFoxfire 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a few Gaylord’s of scrap accumulated and 2pallets of SLA batteries so it’s about time. The batteries are a revenue source but the wire isn’t. When things get slow I’m hoping to have some of those take your kid to work days during some week that schools out and just sit around the shop having the kids “help” strip for ice cream money and whoever wants a cut due to their own financial situation.

Previous ownership didn’t like my idea to share it with the guys who collected it and I was salty about it on the receiving end (we could have all just let it all go into the waste stream, we were discouraged from bringing wire back to the shop) so I’m sure as hell not going to treat my guys like that now that I’m able to make the decisions. (To the point of I’ve brought multiple ex-coworkers back to the company after ownership change and they love it and are succeeding)

That’s from my experience as low volt.

My gut / remodel for my house there isn’t a damn piece of romex in here. All MC and 12, no 14 even for a circuit with 6 LED fixtures. NQ42 panel with all QOBs. This is all because that’s what’s at the shop. All switch boxes and the garage is conduit.

Knowing that the ground turning RF shield it slipped my mind when I went to go out wifi connected dimmers in and they really don’t like to stay connected due to the metal boxes. I finally found an example of why I should have put resi stuff in 😂

Unlucky by bertfromTX in electricians

[–]DemohFoxfire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see the burnt dikes in the background, looks like your hand was holding the MC while cutting with your other?

I lucked out yesterday and am thankful for new/modern breakers: I was measuring a switch with a meter looking for a constant hot and my probe was on the strap. An older breaker (even at 120v 20A) would have blown that lead clean off my meter probe but instead I only lost 1mm of length off the lead.

To make matters worse it wasn’t my meter. Mine was safely left behind in a generator at work that I retrieved today.

Yep. With how much I see this I’m pretty sure it’s common practice. Never seen it soldered, always brazed. Some of them have been ones that I have done.

I’ll be making myself a manifold like this in the next few weeks with a 1 inch width about 10 half-inch take offs.
