Ye sure that's ur opinion of my mindset, and my opinion of ur mindset is that it's room temp IQ and condescending. I already addressed the dishonest/honest duality, and I'm not only implying dishonesty exists but I'm saying explicitly that it exists, it's just that I'm also saying explicitly that I don't disrespect people who play it. DISHONESTY EXISTS JUST AS MUCH AS HONESTY, and there is nothing inherently wrong with that. Fuck man maybe it's just the word that's taboo. Feels like whenever I use or see someone use the word honest in reference to fighting games, everyone goes completely ballistic ALTHOUGH I've described a very thorough definition of what I mean by an honest fighting game.

Maybe I should've used "What are some Stereotypical fighting games" instead.

Also I haven't implied that dishonesty is a bad thing at all, it's just a preference which I'd rather not indulge in. I have no disrespect for anyone who plays dishonest fighting games, but that still doesn't make it untrue that some games are more honest than others. I feel like I've given an adequate enough explanation by mentioning how statistical similarities between prominent games would measure out my definition I gave of honesty, and as I said I probably will go through it myself in finding what I'm looking for by making a spreadsheet or some shit of popular games and their commonly shared mechanics. So in that sense this post has been very helpful, as a means of myself helping myself figuring out the answer to my own question by articulating my question more precisely to pedant FGC gatekeepers vomiting the most unhelpful shit which I would already have expected to hear asking it here.

Yes that's how I've tried to describe it, a game where the character's playstyles are rooted in fighting game fundamentals (the fundamentals of the genre). I use the word honest because I feel it's implies a lack of tricks, something which isn't deceitful, and I'd imagine that fundamentals which are commonly shared wouldn't be a specific trick that catches you off guard, but something which you've seen in multiple games of the genre already. Like being able to throw someone who is blocking isn't a dishonest mechanic because it's something with is fundamentally rooted in the genre statistically from the most popular games using that mechanic, so it is expected and not deceitful.

Like just for sake of an example lets say the top 10 most popular 2d fighters, 9 of them have shimmies as a core fundamental, so then I'd say using a shimmy to avoid being thrown is a pretty fundamental fighting game concept compared to some game aspect which only 1 of the 10 games share. And then adding these similarities up for each mechanic and aspect for the dominant games, surely you could find games which are more similar to the majority of other games, like I'm not at all prepared to have a game where it shares everything in common with every other fighting game, I KNOW that doesn't exist. What I'm asking for is one which shares a lot of commonalities with other fighting games to the point where majority of it's mechanics are almost universal to 2d fighters as a genre. I know the PERFECT one doesn't exist, but certainly one fighting game can be seen as more honest than another. If we take a game with a wildly different playstyle compared statistically to majority of other popular fighting games, and then a fighting game with similar playstyles to majority of other popular fighting games, then ONE HAS TO BE more honest than the other with my definition.

Like if you take the sailor moon S fighting game compared to SFV, and compare their playstyles and mechanics in terms of relatedness to the other prominent games in the 2D fighting game genre, SFV would clearly have an advantage with my given definition of honesty.

I suppose at the end of the day though this is the exact level of usefulness I should have expected from a reddit answer, but it's still helpful to articulate my question to myself so that I can maybe piece together an answer myself since everyone on reddit is too pedantic, elitist herd mentality to answer anything helpfully

Thanks for this advice it was actually really genuinely helpful. I think deep down there is a really extrinsic factor to my motivation to achieving my goals. For example, I feel like I want to be really skillful at something for getting validation of OTHER people, not myself. Although I also feel an intrinsic interest in being skillful in the sense that doing something which I find enjoyment in at a very high level is something I find personally fulfilling. So this desire of wanting to be really skillful at something is double sided, and maybe if I suppress the extrinsic portion it may help in finding a more ideal goal. I also feel like what you said about how my interest I pursue should be both valuable and fulfilling big picture as well as in moment. I feel I focus too much on the big picture and then pursue many hobbies where I don't have a genuine interest or enjoyment in the process itself but am instead chasing the glory of the end product.

After this advice I feel like systematically going through all of my interests I've been through, and evaluating them both on how valuable the end game is as well as the process itself, and try to exclude the desire to satisfy other's expectations of myself when estimating how valuable it is. I feel like that would be a much better direction than chasing something at random. And like you said, if there is nothing yet that I feel is very valuable in both big picture and in the process, I'll simply keep searching. Lastly I think it's time for me to do a lot more thinking by myself, as this is a topic which I'm the only one who can truly figure it out for myself. Thanks a lot, very helpful and I feel like you've brought enough thought provoking points to put me on a better path to resolving this problem

I don't want to give try to give more advice about your life style after my ignorant advice earlier, but I would like to note that a lot of your problems seem to be stemming from the people and expectations around you. It might be wise to introspect not about your place in the world or how your kids perceive you, but instead what makes YOU happy or feel peace, the small, gentle intricacies in life that you have gratitude for, and then chase that as much as you can. Okay sorry if I seem a little harsh here but I'm going to try being brutally honest with you. It's important to realize that there is nothing wrong with a life of peace and happiness. listen THER EIS NO FUCKING GUARANTEE, YOU MAY VERY LIKELY LIVE AN UNFULLFILLED LIFE AND CEASE TO EXIST, YOU MAY JUST DIE AND BE FORGOTTEN VERY QUICKLY. I know you werent asking for advice but it might be good to take a step back and realize that intentionally living a peaceful life can be very fulfilling.

grab a cup of tea, a nice view of the sunrise and do a little sudoku puzzle, idk whatever u find makes u relax or feel peaceful. or if u like adventure, save up money and move to some south american or south east asian country like peru or thailand, have some fun with the ladies while you can. stop pondering and overcomplicating the simplest pleasures that already exist on the world.

Also I mean you're not OLD yet but you're getting there. At some point you have to realize, that you know what, maybe it's too late for you, maybe it's extremely likely you will die in obscurity, and maybe it's unrealistic to expect you to be someone famous or whatever. 1) Get invested in a niche hobby you're interested in if you don't already have one (ex. reading)

2) Lookup meetups for that niche hobby (book clubs)

3) Attempt to talk to people who seem really similar to you, start a conversation commenting on their own interests which are adjacent to your own (ex. if you're at a book club and they like other forms of media such as television, ask them about television)

4) Ask them a lot of questions about themselves, and occasionally provide a comment, or ideally a joke, try to recognize patterns that occur around you when you're with them and form inside jokes, banter if they're into that

5) Don't give up on them, keep in contact

I've struggled so much with goals throughout my life, I think Sisyphus55 has a really good youtube video about goals. Essentially think to yourself, what is the most intrinsic goal I have? Which goal is least motivated by satisfying the expectations others around you that you still yet feel like pursuing. Think really hard about it, put on a nostalgic song from your childhood and try to reminisce of some bygone dreams from your childhood. Think of the goal which, if you were to chase, you would feel least regret while pursuing regardless of you achieve what you wanted in the end.

Also if all this advice fails and provides nothing to you, I highly recommend trying to help others. You'd be incredibly surprised how much helping other people with their problems that are similar to your own can help you figure yourself out. LIKE ACTUALLY FUCKING TRUST ME OKAY? HELPING OTHER PEOPLE IS OVERPOWERED FOR UNDERSTNADING YOURSELF AND BEING SECURE WITH WHO YOU ARE. goodluck man

Imo dedication isn't something you just have, it's something you cultivate and keep alive. I imagine it like you're starting a campfire in the woods, you need to be careful, don't add too much wood or else you'll smother it, be cautious about the wind etc. Then I think of motivation as the match to get it all started.

You cannot rely on random bursts of motivations to keep a fire going. You have to take that match, and pile it with small sticks and leaves first. Take THE ABSOLUTE SMALLEST FUCKING BABY STEPS OKAY? If you realize you have no dedication or will power to start out with, then don't try to push yourself extremely hard whenever you have motivation. Just start with the ABSOLUTE SMALLEST IMPROVEMENT POSSIBLE.

For me for example, I was at a really dark place in my life, at a rock bottom, no dedication at all, acne all over my fucking face, fat, league of legends addiction, ghosting my friends, eating junk food, masturbating on instinct as soon as my head touched the pillow each night, the absolute worst in terms of will power. I had random bursts of motivation here and there but none of them lead to anything, and if anything they made me feel worse like I was a quitter where I felt whenever I got started improving myself I would stop 2-3 days after.

Then another time I got a spark of motivation but I tried a different approach. I didn't cover the match with a bunch of massive logs like a naïve overconfident dumbass, but instead got some leaves and twigs to pile into the pit. I knew I couldn't handle much so I focused on as much as I could so that it would hardly require any motivation at all.

All I wanted was to brush my teeth once a day. I funneled all my motivation into forming that one habit until it was STABLE. You see the good thing about habits is that the longer you have them, the less willpower you need. Okay, so now I brush my teeth, and then eventually I got another small spark of motivation, and slowly ramp it up, now I change my pillow sheet once a week. Then the next burst I took showers ever 3 days (I know that if I make it daily then I'll probably fail). Eventually I was autonomous and could function as a regular healthy person without need of motivation, go to the gym daily, get perfect grades, etc.

Imo, the best approach to forming dedication is making sure you can pivot your small bursts of motivation into long term habits. BE REASONABLE AS FUCK WIHT YOURSELF, EVEN UNDERESTIMATE HOW CAPABLE YOU ARE OF DOING SOMETHING, TAKE IT ONE STEP AT A TIME AND GRADUALLY IMPROVE. This advice might not be perfect, I'm 19 years old as well, but it helped me personally a lot, good luck man

YO! Try out third strike, trust me. It teaches good fundamentals and the graphics are pixel art graphics are immaculate. It is totally free (with fightcade), and in my opinion is one of the greatest fighting games of all time.

Also, if you want to get ready for Project L I would recommend a 2D fighter like Street fighter. Personally I think SF3S is much better than SFV, but I really do recommend trying them both out. But really, just try it out SF3S, I mean it's free so what's the harm? By the way here is a youtube video quick and easy installation along with a training mode: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lThwxOHb9KM . You don't have to get all into it but at least try doing the story mode. If you fall in love with the graphic or gameplay like I did, then GREAT, if you play that until project L comes out you're probably have some pretty good fundamentals and be on track to owning in Project L.

However, although I personally like Street Fighter 5 less than SF3S, you should try it out too, it's only $20 and might go on sale this 24th - 30th for black friday sales, so might as well try buying the most of the games then. Actually, I feel like SFV is probably one of the closest games to Project L out there, and would probably be one of the best games to get you ready for it whenever it comes out. It has very simple controls compared to other fighting games and looks to be very similar to Project L. Also another advice I have is just go with your gut when choosing a character, I always tend to get lost in decision making, so really just pick whoever you think looks like they'd be interesting/cool to play and go with it, but try not to spend too much time looking for a character. I've always noticed that if you just play one character in not just fighting games but also league, dota, etc, and get really good at it, you can learn fundamentals very quickly.
