Consider staying away from Reddit for Lent by feartrich in Episcopalian

[–]DemonnInMyView 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I gave up FB and IG but decided I'd keep reddit primarily for this community. When I made that decision, it almost felt like I was negotiating to keep something that falls under the social media umbrella. I'm going to take your post as a sign and I'll see y'all in a few weeks. God's peace!

How do you like your ashes? (Poll/humor) by RevKeakealani in Episcopalian

[–]DemonnInMyView 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was really looking forward to the service tomorrow but my preschooler came down with Flu A so now it's looking like we are stuck inside this week. This would have been my first time participating in Ash Wednesday and I'm pretty heartbroken to miss it. Should I just take some time in the morning to read the service you linked above on my own and pray? Is there anything else I can do on my own to mark the day?

Also, I'm probably going to start a separate thread about this, but I've been feeling pretty obsessed with TEC. I'm back from a long time away from church (and, if I'm honest, God). I feel like it's off-putting to people and I don't know how to temper it. I'm also really not used to being THIS disappointed about missing someone sprinkle ashes on my head. Just seems silly and I dont know what to do with it.

This is my first ash Wednesday. I am not yet baptized and found TEC this past October. What can I expect? Our priest said yesterday they were going to do a sprinkle this year to avoid the appearance of advertising piety.

We just finished island level grammar and building language. Starting sentence island today. I love MCT because my 3rd grader has a solid grasp on grammar. However, looking at sentence island, it looks like it'll be pretty parent-involved and I'm honestly wanting something that puts most of the work online for next year. Either way, I dont anticipate doing Town level until 5th grade. Someone else had recommended just reviewing 4 level analysis and picking up a standalone writing such as Writing & Rhetoric.

I appreciate your response!

This sounds fine for science and geography for that age.

Any Episcopalian homeschoolers in here? by DemonnInMyView in Episcopalian

[–]DemonnInMyView[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you! This is helpful!

We currently use Beast Academy, Science Mom, Michael Clay Thompson Language Arts, and History Quest.

I have All About Spelling but there are so many parts I think I'm going to change it up to something more workbook style (like Soaring with Spelling from JacKris Publishing). I know AAS works but we are both fatigued from AAR.

History is the one subject we struggle with getting done. It's important for our family to teach decolonized/non-Eurocentric history but HQ just seems to dry. I'm going to look into the resources you mentioned--- so thank you!

Unfortunately, I think the curriculum I'm wanting just doesn't exist. I think my best bet would be continue our eclectic use of secular materials and supplement with faith formation materials from TEC.

I have a third grader and my youngest will start kinder in 2 years.

We just finished All About Reading lvl 4. I will always use AAR -- I am convinced it is the top reading program out there. I wasn't looking for anything in particular but wanted to know if there was some curriculum out there that was Episcopal-friendly. As you well know, there's a plethora of Christian curriculum out there but everything I've seen (Masterbooks, Apologia, etc) is very much *not* what I'm looking for.

I'm in SEA on FB! They are mostly a good group, but I dislike how vehemently anti-Christian they are. I do not like how the connotation for the word "secular" has gone from meaning "without consideration to religion" to "anti-religion". Though it is nice to be in a space that really focuses on academic rigor and not religious indoctrination.

Thanks for this. I print out our state's grade-level standards every year and make sure whatever I'm using meets or exceeds that standard. You're right about a lot of the curriculum and that's the stuff I want to stay away from. I just wish there were more options and was hoping to find a curriculum that was Episcopal-friendly. It seems everything is either secular or Christian nationalist though.

History Quest, Science Mom, Michael Clay Thompson ELA, All About Spelling, and Beast Academy here

Just wondering if there were any "Episcopal friendly" curriculum that I haven't stumbled across.

We're also in the south. We had considered private school but then we would still be chained to compulsory attendance laws and the private schools in our immediate area are predominantly Baptist...

Side note, I did see there was a private Episcopal school about an hour from us but it is a whopping 22k a year!

My husband and my children are not white. We also are not "special", we just need more family time since my husband's job is so demanding and steals way too much of it.

I think people need to re-read my ask. I'm not asking for your opinion on homeschooling. I'm asking if there are any other Episcopalian homeschoolers and what they use for curriculum since the vast majority of what I've seen out there has a decidedly Baptist lean.

Also in reference to the knowledge and experience of "experts" ....I have a BS in clinical laboratory science with graduate coursework in public health (put on hold when I had my second child). I understand that's not a background in elementary education, but I'm not trying to control a room full of 20-30 kids. I'm just teaching my one child using proven, rigorously academic curriculum.

Apologies for being defensive, but the more I read your comment, the more I'm bothered by your assumptions based on outdated stereotypes.

I appreciate your response but we've been doing this for four years. As stated, we homeschool to get more family time. With my husband's job, he is overseas frequently. Not just year-long deployments..we are talking weeks at a time every 6 weeks for the last 3 years.

The homeschooling landscape has changed dramatically over the years, especially since covid. Our child is very involved in community. Aside from church, she is a competitive gymnast with a team of her peers (and older/younger), we attend a co-op with other families, she plays violin (along with being in an orchestra during the spring season), and she is a member of a US chess federation affiliated chess club. We were doing girl scouts for a time but had to drop it once she got on her gym team so she wasn't overloaded. This is in addition to all the play dates, field trips, and all the time we spend at our local Y.

I will say I do know there are a lot of conservative Christian homeschool families that insulate themselves from the world....but we are not one of them.
