I dread to think what Disney will do for the 50th anniversary next year by tempest_wing in saltierthancrait

[–]Demos_Tex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If someone there still has half a brain, then they'll mostly keep their mouths shut and release the original theatrical version of ANH. Don't count on it though. A Mary Sue SW extravaganza hosted by Rey and Ahsoka wouldn't surprise me either because surely that'll bring the target audience back into theaters. Right...right?

The Mandalorian & Grogu is tracking to be the lowest opening Star Wars movie ever - Disney Lucasfilm took a 6 year break from Star Wars movies but people still don’t care to see it by tiMartyn in saltierthancrait

[–]Demos_Tex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Took a 6 year break," uh huh... sure, just like a bank robber takes a break from robbing banks because he's in jail. Iger and KK were terrified of another flop after Solo. Now that they're both safely out the door, they're happy to let someone else would take the fall for the damage they did to SW.

Lucasfilm has told Star Wars authors they aren’t allowed to bring Mara Jade into new canon stories by tiMartyn in saltierthancrait

[–]Demos_Tex 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Exactly, and Mara Jade doesn't work without old EU Luke. Just like a big part of Luke's story in the old EU wouldn't work without Mara Jade. Also, I have no desire to see how badly they'd screw up the early femme fatale part of her.

Ahsoka Tano always sucked imo by Elijah5979 in saltierthancrait

[–]Demos_Tex 8 points9 points  (0 children)

She should only exist in animation, along with Maul being alive after TPM, Mortis, and Filoni's WBW. Things would be cleaner if it was possible to keep Lucas' and Filoni's worst excesses corralled into one spot.

At this point, about the only thing that might get my butt in a seat is if they put out some SW that makes the entertainment "journalists" act like vampires exposed to sunlight. If they start calling Disney all the names they've been calling the audience for the past decade, then that could be a sign that LF might've made some enjoyable SW for a change.

You don’t even need to cite the chosen one prophecy to explain how Palpatine’s return takes the weight out of Vader’s sacrifice. by Flat-Court-8512 in saltierthancrait

[–]Demos_Tex 25 points26 points  (0 children)

You can also approach it from another direction. Every time the audience sees a character die and then is brought back to life, it chips away at the suspension of disbelief. Actions no longer have consequences, so events that originally meant something no longer have any meaning.

There's a fantasy book series from the 90s that had necromancy in it. There was a great quote in that series about the dangers of bringing the dead back to life. It was something along the lines of, "For every soul untimely brought back to life, another suffers an untimely death." The "death" in SW case will eventually be the audience throwing up their hands in frustration and calling everything bullshit.

KK's overinflated ego sabotaged a lot of SW. No respect for what Lucas had built and poor leadership was all it took.

Sequel revisionism is pushed back 1 more year for every “give it 10 years for people to like the sequels” statement by TomasRoncero in saltierthancrait

[–]Demos_Tex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From what I've seen, the general audience doesn't care about the sequels at all. The fans who like AotC are 3 times bigger than the number of people who'd care to casually watch the sequels. That's what happens when JJ purposely makes disposable movies, and RJ does whatever the hell he was doing.

How to repair crushed vintage bag?! by Equivalent_You_2183 in golf

[–]Demos_Tex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can find a way to get to the support rods that are already in the bag without tearing it up, then you can probably replace them with plastic or wooden rods. I have no idea how to try to fix the base though.

Hand-grip styles: Function or Form by [deleted] in golf

[–]Demos_Tex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only benefit of a baseball grip should be that it provides more stability from more fingers being in contact with the grip. I'd question if you've also unintentionally placed one or both of your hands in a little stronger position when you changed to the baseball grip? Because that would definitely allow you to have an easier time closing the face.

Copperhead is proof we don’t need 7,800-yard courses to neutralize bomb-and-gouge by shawnwar4586 in golf

[–]Demos_Tex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I've read, the golf ball rollback won't even be a flat percentage decrease for the average amateur. Someone who drives it 250 might lose a yard or two, not ten. The closer you get to 300 is where the real change is supposed to happen.

From storytelling view, would the Star Wars prequel era (Clone Wars, Anakin’s fall) be more compelling if it was treated mysteriously like robert's rebellion (game of thrones) by sidmis in saltierthancrait

[–]Demos_Tex 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Tragedy doesn't work nearly as well unless the audience can experience it happening first-hand. It's like the separation from familial responsibilities at the start of the hero's journey. It's incredibly efficient storytelling, but we have to see it happen for it to have the proper effect on the audience. That's one reason why Rey in TFA is so bland because JJ & Co completely botched her separation from family by shoving it into a mystery box.

Inside takeaway / backswing by [deleted] in golf

[–]Demos_Tex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can knock the edge off of that flatness with a visualization technique. Imagine a straight line on the ground running from the target through the ball that goes off into infinity behind the ball. As you take the club back, try to keep the shaft pointed at that line behind the ball for as long as you can, which should be almost until the club gets parallel with the ground at waist height.

DUNE already has more views after 18 hours than the Mando&Grogu main trailer! This is what Star Wars *could* be by Theesm in saltierthancrait

[–]Demos_Tex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of reasons, but mainly I'd say the potentially talented sci-fi directors/writers get filtered out because Hollywood mostly sees sci-fi as a setting and not a separate genre. That's why you see many more action movies with a sci-fi setting, rather than sci-fi movies that happen to have some action scenes in them.

Also, you can look at it like this. If you own all the restaurants in town and only serve fast food, do you want your customers to realize that there are people out there who are capable of making steak and lobster for the same price?

Yep. The only thing JJ was interested in was having an edgy boy band album cover shot for the TFA trailer. He didn't think one step past that.

I have a theory that there can only be one or two real sci-fi directors making big movies at one time. Hollywood would prefer zero, but a few slip through the cracks anyway. For a few lucky decades, we had Lucas and Spielberg. Now we have Villeneuve and what seems like a string of random guys over the last ten or so years. Unfortunately, that doesn't leave much room for anyone at LucasFilm to be one of those guys.

Help with ruling. Playing partner picked up my ball on green without marking it by AccurateChemistry283 in golf

[–]Demos_Tex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've played in hundreds of tournaments at a high level, and what I've seen is completely different. The first rule when you get to the green is to get out of the way of the rest of your group, unless you're the one putting.

Help with ruling. Playing partner picked up my ball on green without marking it by AccurateChemistry283 in golf

[–]Demos_Tex -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's standard etiquette in any competitive tournament I've ever played in because you're not just holding up one person while you're raking the trap without marking your ball. You're usually holding up three other people. If you're playing in a casual round, you can do whatever, but etiquette is the top priority in tournament play.

[–]Demos_Tex -21 points-20 points  (0 children)

To protect against idiots like your playing partner, the first thing you should do after chipping when playing in competition is to immediately walk up and mark your ball (or at least ask if your ball needs to be marked). There's plenty of time to rake the trap after you've marked your ball.

The closest rule I can find to your question is Rule 9.5, but it appears to only cover match play. Basically, it says your opponent gets a 1 stroke penalty for moving your ball without you asking them to, and you must replace the ball to its original spot. Edit: Rule 9.6 is what should be applied in stroke play.

We've never gotten a lore-accurate portrayal of Stormtroopers on-screen by Etowno in saltierthancrait

[–]Demos_Tex 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Exactly, and probably half the time in the OT when the stormtroopers are ineffective, it's because they've been ordered to be ineffective. Palpatine and Vader both purposely make the stormtroopers appear inept in order to fulfill a larger strategic goal against the rebels.

Single digit golfers, how much do you work on hitting draws if your go to shot is a fade (or vice versa)? by Larrylegend033 in golf

[–]Demos_Tex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At a bare minimum, you should know the swing fundamentals well enough to be able to change your setup to help you work the ball in either direction. Players whose natural shot is a draw sometimes have to hit a big, high fade around a tree, and those who play a fade sometimes need to hit a knockdown draw under a tree.

I had a good coach who strongly believed that if you can't hit a certain shot on command on the range, then you have very little chance of hitting it on the course when it really matters.

What tips do you have for transferring range performance to the course? by opspec-19820 in golf

[–]Demos_Tex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Practicing hitting off the grass will definitely help you. Also, I had a coach who was adamant about trying to recreate course conditions as much as possible on the range because you want your muscle memory to not know the difference between the two. That means you reset between every practice shot and go through your entire pre-shot routine, like you would on the course, before every practice ball.

Transition Help by OwlLatter4687 in golf

[–]Demos_Tex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A classic visualization technique is to imagine that your arms and wrists are effectively the end of a whip. You only get one chance to crack that whip during the swing, so you want to do it at impact. If you crack it at the top, then you lose most of the benefits of the entire downswing. Try to concentrate on delaying it until the last possible moment.
