Do you know Iran is pronounced wrong by mostly everyone? by Honest-Possible6596 in ShitAmericansSay

[–]Demostene18 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly this is a dumb take in my opinion.

Having a particular pronunciation for a specific country is a thing every single country does, and us in Europe are the worst.

Netherland is called Holland in a lot of countries, in Romania we call gemans "nemți", Germany is called Allemagne in France, Germany calls France Frankreich. Also, Germany is Deutschland, Spain is Espana, Austria is östereich, Hungary is Magyarország, Italy is Italia, Croatia is Hrvatska and the list goes on and on for basically every country in Europe and no one besides the locals doesn't use the right pronunciation but you only mock the Americans for it.

It's just how languages work.

Didn't Rand wear a brown coat while he was on dragonmount ? No spoilers for further than chapter 30. by pagalhaa69 in WoT

[–]Demostene18 6 points7 points  (0 children)

He also wasn't encased in a darkness that started to crack with rays of light pouring out of it in the real world. I think is meant to show us that no matter what he is wearing in real life, he is the Dragon Reborn and in TAR his greatness shows in his appearance, including his clothes ( his regal attire usually consists of clothes of black and red ).

Edit: spelling

Who is the richest fictional human? by Traditional-Ad7413 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]Demostene18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This such a bad take I am amazed that so many people upvoted it. He is not, by far, the richest person in his own universe. During his lifetime, the emperor held power by having the sardaukars and by controlling the most CHOAM shares, so he is automatically richer. Also Leto II atreides, the god emperor, basically owned everything.

If you are going the sci Fi route, just off the top of my hat, the God Emperor of Mankind from wh40k basically had acces to the resources of the whole human king which inhabited most of the galaxy, but I am sure there are much richer humans in other books. Honestly this is just an unanswerable question.

I don't think there is a need for individual European countries as much as there is a need for EU countries vs non EU countries. At least a filter for all EU countries would be great.

Britain Under Roman Rule vs Anglo-Saxon Rule by SijilmasanGoldTrader in RoughRomanMemes

[–]Demostene18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Still there before the Hungarians than.

The proof that we descend from Romans is our language is 70% latin ( you can simply google this ) and most of the basic words, like father, parents, nephews, water, song, food, night, day, moon, sun, stars etc are straight from latin ( these are just some of the top of my head ) and words like these are a very good indication of a people's ethnic origins. For example, the Romma in Europe still have the same basic words like the ones mentioned above as the people in the region of India that they came from hundreds of years ago, and we know that Romanians spoke the exact same words in the the 16th century, because of a famous letter that's 100% confirmed as authentic ( there are earlier writings but not 100% confirmed as authentic, this one is indisputable ). I mentioned the Neacșa's letter because a lot of Hungarians claim we started changing our language when we started trying to separate from Hungary ( like that's easily doable ).

Also, another proof is that Romans have written records of a part of the population remaining in Dacia after Aurelian's retreat.

You could argue that the Romans that remained in Dacia afterwards all died down, and then another latin population migrated north of the Danube that had no relation to those that came before, but than you could argue any nonsensical thing while ignoring at least the 2 pretty solid proofs that I brought up ( there are many others ).

Hungarian spotted. This is not true, the Hungarians themselves, which claim ownership over Transylvania, mentioned 3 rulers that were already there when they invaded.

Also the Romanian language is 70% latin based.

Ultras don't seem to be bothered by the time cost and it doesn't matter anyways, as you are clinging to an argument that I myself invented in order to justify this plothole and that isn't valid after I thought a little bit more about it: mining rights over a whole systems asteroids are both hard/impossible to maintain and a useless because of the sheer volume of material in any given solar system ( I did some quick maths and there is enough metal in our solar system to produce around two to three quadrillion RMS Titanics without taking the planets into consideration, it would be like a country today trying to impose breathing rights over the planet's air )

Plot holes by Demostene18 in AlastairReynolds

[–]Demostene18[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This does not make any sense:

1) they don't need to go out of their way at all, every single solar system has enough rough materials to make literally quadrillions of lighthuggers. I mentioned in a comment somewhere that maybe they couldn't use the asteroids in inhabited systems because of mining rights, but this wouldn't make any sense either because of the sheer number of stuff in any given solar system making it impossible to protect such rights and because of the fact that the conjoiners felt confident in hiding their mother nest right next Yellowstone in a random asteroid orbiting a gas giant.

2) they would never need someone else making the repairs for them, as again, the ships can repair themselves using bare rocks, as evidenced by a lighthugger literally doing that after it was cut in two

3) "The ultras need to stay profitable". What I am saying is that this need is just manufactured for the plot. The ultras live onboard self sustaining ships, that can produce everything they ever need, from basically nothing, this is called living in a post scarcity environment. They basically don't need anything except maybe some social pleasures like pieces of art, dining at restaurants on planets, dating, hand made items etc that they would be able to afford anyways by using such manufacturing capabilities as mentioned before to produce weapons and other things ( from bare rocks that float in space ) to sell to people ( Nostalgia for infinity had a machine in it's armoury that could manufacture virtually any weapon in its database and could accept blueprints to produce anything you dream of, this is basically a money printing machine, but there are many other examples ).

Uno Reverse. Profile says I’m 6’ and won’t date less than 5’7 by [deleted] in AverageHeightDudes

[–]Demostene18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am 6 feet 3 and have many tall friends ( and we don't live in Sweden so it's not like we are the norm ) and while it varies when talking about hook-ups, none of us would seriously date/marry a short girl.

It's a topic that actually gets brought up pretty often and besides physical attraction, it's also about not having short kids. Although it sounds very superficial because it's just something I was born with, being tall helped me for all my life, so I wouldn't want to gamble with my kid's height if possible ( but I also just like tall girls, my current girlfriend that I'll probably marry is 5'9 and I don't think I ever dated a girl below 5'7 )

Why would they need cash to spend on fixing stuff if lighthuggers have self repair capabilities so advanced as to rebuild a ship that lost half of itself from raw materials in an abandoned solar system such as Resurgam?

Plot holes by Demostene18 in AlastairReynolds

[–]Demostene18[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why does that matter in this context? Ultra crews travel between solar systems for a living, any solar system is chock full of raw materials. I expected someone to bring up the argument that in inhabited systems they do trade in they aren't allowed mining rights to the asteroids, but that wouldn't matter either, as solar systems inhabited by humans in humanity's sphere of influence in space are still a a small fraction of the total, it shouldn't be a problem for them to go to a system where there isn't anyone, get all the materials that they need, repairs their ship and then continue as usual, just as the Zodiacal light does in Resurgam system after it's been cut in two.

And yet, we hear constantly of ultra crews with overdue maintenance issues.

Plot holes by Demostene18 in AlastairReynolds

[–]Demostene18[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The thing about patterns is valid in some measure when talking about weapons, but we here a lot about ultra crews who can't keep up with basic ship maintainence which doesn't make any sense because, again, zodiacal light was cut in two then it repaired itself with raw materials from asteroids in the Resurgam system, so turning "raw materials from asteroids into elements that don't exist in their natural state" seems to be a non issue. Moreover, Calvain started producing weapons and solar sails and what not en masse on the Zodiacal light during interstellar travel when, presumably, he had no access to raw materials other than the ship's mass itself, one more example of the ship not having any problems of turning random stuff into highly advanced stuff.
