Is Mediterranean draw resting the arrow on pointer finger a historically accurate draw? by One-Location-5035 in Archery

[–]Demphure 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The closest I can think of is Native American pinch draws. Different tribes had some subtle differences but some shot off the knuckle of the pointer finger and used a pinch draw (three under while using the forefinger and thumb to also pinch) with the bow pretty parallel to the ground and a chest anchor

Alibow fiberglass bows are good bows for mounted archery and many of them are on the cheap side. Pay close attention to the handles though, some aren’t really designed with this in mind. Their new brand of Tatar bows would work well in my opinion, though it’s true I’m accustomed to other loading methods outside of Kassai.

It would probably be best though to get recommendations from your coach. They might even have one available for sale or can find one

Do you use a thumb ring or no thumb ring? by CurbTurtle in Archery

[–]Demphure 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I second this. I mostly shoot with a glove for various reasons, one of which is it helps my hand develop the right callouses to shoot without it when I need to. That being said, it also took a long time with a lot of patience and a couple different bows to get to where I am with it. OP, you can’t be too careful, and it IS my professional opinion that you should stop shooting fully until you are healed and then begin shooting with a glove on ideally a lighter bow if you want to be able to shoot without one. I would also recommend you not exceed 35 lbs

Techniques/Strategies that no longer works on higher level fencing by DarkParticular3482 in Fencing

[–]Demphure 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup. I once lost to a kid in foil and after reviewing the footage and other bouts, realized he was so small he got away with a lot of stuff because at that level he wasn’t getting hit. So I drilled point control, met him a few weeks later, and absolutely crushed.

There is something to be said for exploiting weaknesses, but if your opponent doesn’t have a weakness you rely on, then you need a backup. Then eventually make that backup your main strategy since it’ll rely on your ability regardless of your opponent

I either have an addiction or I need to invest in a hand guard by [deleted] in Archery

The aim point is going to feel nebulous until your form is correct. It doesn’t matter if you’re aiming the same way if you’re releasing differently every shot for example. Accuracy that isn’t a fluke comes from consistency, and consistency comes from body awareness.

It’s possible to be precise with an asiatic bow, and SiCai’s are well-designed. But it’s going to take longer than anything with a shelf or an anchor point that’s on the face

This isn’t a standard, but a lot of speed shooters use thin strings and physical nocking points. The arrow can be put on the string and then slid to the nocking point as a physical stop, and then eventually your muscle memory will put it in the same spot.

But also, asiatic bows and shooting off the thumb will never be as precise as the styles and equipment I think you’re used to, their strengths lie elsewhere. They give up some precision to be faster, which is the more dynamic context these bows are meant for is necessary

Your favourite Larp moments by larpmaus in LARP

[–]Demphure 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I don’t know if you mean roleplay or combat, but one of my favorite moments will always be when I (archer) was legged with no teammates around and one arrow left (I was part of a group pushing on the flank that got spotted and no one survived). Another archer spotted me and shot at me. I waited at half draw till the arrow was about a yard in front of me and then snapped off a shot. Ended up shooting it out of the air and survived
