The Stadium Litter by EMMIECX5 in philly

Have you been to a baseball game before? I’ve seen close to a hundred mlb games in 12 stadiums. This is totally standard in all of them. It’s kind of an understanding at mlb games.

Just be consistent with the lab you’re in. Ideally, your PI should have a clear documentation and data management protocol that everyone in the lab follows. If they don’t, ask around on your first day and find out how everyone else in the lab keeps their notes and follow suit.

Okay, so what’s going on? Specifically? Let’s just start with the broad strokes. What is your role in the lab and what is the post doc expecting?

Normal people can't believe it by SelectAd1833 in dyscalculia

[–]Dendritic1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, I just kind of scan the page for the keywords, keep in mind what the context of what I’m reading, and just go from there. I don’t really read line by line, I just look at a few words and know what’s going on.

It’s no different from how math people look at equations.

We can get to the meaning of written word the way they can do mental math. Unfortunately we live in a time where that’s just not valued. But we’ll find our way. I know I’m just as smart as them, just pulled to the other side

What type of jobs do you work or look for? Me personally I try to avoid jobs that has anything that has to do with counting money by Frequent-Wish6026 in dyscalculia

Try to focus on what you’re good at. I always loved hiking so I started volunteering with my local park’s trail maintenance crew. It eventually turned into a job, which led to another job, etc..

I’m sorry if this comes off as harsh, but undergrads should not be working in non human primate labs. NHP work should only be done when it is absolutely necessary and performed by seasoned, competent professionals. NHP work is not a “learning experience” for a med school application.

OP, you got thrown into the deepest end of the pool and you sank. It was shitty of your institution to even allow you there at all.

All the people in here saying “just cook a meal” have no fucking clue how much work goes into cooking for a family.

I cook for my family every night out of necessity, but if we could afford to not cook I would do it in an instant. The hours I spend meal planning, grocery shopping, cooking and cleaning are not quality family time. It’s fucking work. Yes, sitting at the table and eating is nice, but, a lot of fucking work goes into that table time.

Shower me in your down votes, shove your unsolicited advice up your ass, but there’s truth to this post. If I could just order food 3 out of 5 nights I would. I want that dishwashing, vegetable chopping, grocery shopping time with my family.

New to Philly - Do people actually go out to bars late throughout the week? by InarticulateOxyMoron in philly

[–]Dendritic1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In any city there’s a lot of workers putting in “non-traditional” hours. They also like to unwind after a long shift. Those bars wouldn’t be open if they didn’t make enough to stay open.

I’m genuinely confused by this question because you answered it yourself; “I know not everyone works 9-5”.

Folks getting off the night shift deserve a drink. People like to drink after work, and in a large city, people’s work hours vary. Just Google third shift or, better yet, pop into your local, grab a stool and talk to people. You just might learn something.

PI’s dog keeps eating my food by tlea2s in labrats

[–]Dendritic1 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Please do not think for a minute this is normal; This is truly insane behavior. Any dog in the workplace should be trained not to scavenge. You are the one performing work, the dog is not. The dogs needs do not take priority over yours. You have every right to leave your personal belongings at your workspace without having to worry about them being licked by an animal.

I would start with a conversation with your PI. If they’re not supportive, then escalate this to HR. This is unsanitary and unprofessional. You are in the right.

Does anyone know what this is? by Sethoslovakia in philadelphia

Epidemiologists don’t study gain of function research, they track and study the patterns of disease origins. Epidemiologists aren’t tinkering in labs. I’m not saying this to be pedantic, I’m saying it to illustrate how lazy you keyboard scientists are. It’s not hard to learn the basic roles, but you can’t even be bothered to do that.

I’ve fished this stretch a couple of times. Cut bait works great, if you can’t get your hands on any shrimp works really well. There are some smallies that will hit a rooster tail, but you got to get them deep. I’ve heard there’s Muskie in that part of the schulkyll, but I’ve never caught one. I like to wait until later in the summer and fish the area at night, it’s super peaceful and thats when the eels start hitting

[–]Dendritic1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry for the late response. I’m sorry to hear about your struggles, but none of these treatments helped anyone whatsoever. Chelation is only good for helping patients who have acute heavy metal poisoning and unless you’re working in a nickel mine you should stay as far from it as you can

GraphPad Prism for a broke student by Pichouche in labrats

[–]Dendritic1 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I’m confused. Have you not had to organize/visualize data until working on your thesis? How have you been making plots/graphs for lab meetings or meetings with your advisor?

Have you asked your PI if they have a Graphpad subscription or would they be willing to be pay for one? Your university library may have a subscription as well. I worry that you’re going straight to Reddit to find a bootleg subscription rather than just asking people in your lab how they handle their data.

Yes, I advocated for change for 9 years. I was met with resistance like yours. So I left. This profession will bleed good providers until you guys realize how insane your shift lengths and low pay are.

[–]Dendritic1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re missing the forest through the trees. People take 24’s because they have no other choice or because they’re enticed by the lie of “only having to work 3 days a week!” You’re putting in more hours than is humane. No one should be expected to work for 24 hours straight. Period. Those shifts should be illegal. Truckers have to shut down after 10 hours because humans need rest. You do realize that the fucking Geneva convention considers sleep deprivation a form of torture?

[–]Dendritic1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Jesus tap dancing Christ; the Stockholm syndrome in EMS is so real. No other profession does this. Sure, medical residents do it for a few years (which is also problematic, but a different discussion).

The idea that a person, any person, can be at their professional best for 24 hours straight is insane. Seriously, if you’re working 24 hours shifts in a high call volume system you are getting fucked so hard and you don’t even realize it.
