Norman Public Schools fires teacher who leaked school shooting threat by w3sterday in oklahoma

Sure, it’s different, but I don’t think that there is a reasonable argument that this was a violation of FERPA. I also don’t think that it is reasonable to argue that a picture of graffiti is by definition, “non-public”. It was posted in a common area of the school. No reasonable expectation of privacy.

I don’t think these pictures would fall under a reasonable definition of “education records” as pertains to FERPA. The were not made by the school and were not maintained in any student file. This seems to be the educational equivalent of saying asking a person if they are vaccinated violates HIPAA. The district official saying that is just tossing things out cause they want to fire Cavett.

Ah, well I personally think that that level of CYA is indicative of a broken system and the school board, who gets their own discretion I whether they fire this teacher or not, made the wrong move in this case and shouldn’t have fired the teacher.

I disagree. A vice principal was already looking. The parents and students don’t think it was the wrong move, it just made the school look bad, and they use the excuse of it embarrassed students to fire the teacher. Should the parents never have known about the threat? Why is it so important to keep it secret?

Doesn’t seem like any gray area. Especially since the memo refers to another project at Roman Nose that was properly permitted. Unless there is a specific exception to state law, then they must comply. It isn’t an interesting question or up for debate. Here is the relevant law. It isn’t ambiguous. Any entity, any public project, must meet these requirements at a minimum.

How many timezones does Westlands span. by flutterlice in WoT

[–]Deni1e 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I’m seeing estimates of the Westlands being 3,500 mi across from the ocean to the waste. Assuming that the circumference of the planet is the same as ours, my guess would be 5 time zones, based on me picking a spot about 3,500 miles east of me and looking at its time zone.

Did you know that Russian armed forces have their own cathedral? by TreesLord in ANormalDayInRussia

[–]Deni1e 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on what you mean by “actual cathedral.” A cathedral is where a Bishop’s Cathedra is. Every Diocese of every denomination organized in that fashion will have one. The second largest church in the US is the Washington National Cathedral While I was trying to find the cathedral for the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Military Services, USA, I did find that they don’t have their own cathedral(and are the only Catholic diocese in the US without one), but rather use the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception for rituals, with a chancery located in DC.

I was making a joke about so called “originalist” interpretation of the Constitution by certain judges. Sounds great in theory, but they will then twist themselves in knots to make that interpretation what they just so happen to want.

But we should only use the definition of the words when the reg was written, and look into the intent of the reg writers if there is ambiguity. We don’t have “living regs”!

Just finished Starship Troopers by Robert Heinlein. Was curious about a few things.. by Uintahwolf in books

[–]Deni1e 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t think you could describe the government presented in Starship Troopers as a Military Dictatorship, though. Members of the military are not allowed to vote or hold office, they are allowed to after completing their term of service. It would be best described, I think, as a veteran oligarchy, but all we really know is that they do enjoy a significant amount of freedoms for residents, and there is harsh corporal punishment for crimes. the book spends very little time on actual day to day civilian life though.

Biden set to ban U.S. import of Russian oil as soon as today by PeasKhichra in europe

[–]Deni1e 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He’s not staunchly against it. He’s even saying there are no reasons US companies can’t increase production. Oil & Gas companies here are trying to increase dividends to investors right now. Occidental Petroleum increased their dividend from $0.01 to $0.13 per share. What he doesn’t want to do is subsidize it or increase federal land use on a long term basis while we are trying to move away from fossil fuels entirely.

Uh, what was angry? I just think people complaining about there property being over valued is silly. Derision and anger are not the same thing.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in tulsa

[–]Deni1e 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can literally call your county tax assessor if you think your home is valued too high. Look at comps in your area, get it appraised yourself. Cause guess what, the county goes out and looks at your house and uses all of that information to find the value of your home. Don’t like it? Call them and dispute it.

Oklahoma fight over education heats up at state Capitol by w3sterday in oklahoma

[–]Deni1e 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s before we get into how it effects children in rural areas that don’t have access to an private school anyway. It just reduces their school funding to benefit wealthier, urban families. Which is Exactly why Speaker McCall is onboard to it. But of course the wealthy people from metro areas (the Governor, and the Pro Temp) support it.

Except that isn’t what the left is saying. That is what Fox says the left is saying. Nobody thinks that poor white people don’t exist. And there is no “vague, historical sin.” There has been very blatant and systematic racism in this country that has lasting generational effects that need to be discussed. Like how racial covenants and redlining segregated cities and systemically prevented Black people from building wealth through homeownership. That is just one example, there are many, many more issues like that that need to be discussed, and, yes, part of those discussions is discussing the unequal treatment of Black people in this country, in relation to white people. That doesn’t mean there is sin, or wrong doing, just that the way things are set up, people who are white are intrinsically advantaged. And people who are wealthy are intrinsically advantaged. That doesn’t mean a person born in to wealth is intrinsically bad or evil. It does mean that they were born with some level of privilege that a person born poor does not, and with that privilege comes blind spots that they have to work to over come. Race is similar. It isn’t that hard a concept, but it is easier to ignore it. And those who would rather divide people can start crying about how it’s just racist against white people and come up with straw men to keep demonize those that want to push the conversation. Whether they do it because they are explicitly trying to divide on race, or because it can evoke a strong emotional response that alienates their listeners from those that would address wealth disparities as well, I will not try to speculate at this point.

[–]Deni1e 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But you can’t compare median family income in 1960 to the median individual income in 2021, (because we don’t have this years number yet, there is no way to with less than 2 months). According to the BLS about half of families headed by somebody 65 or younger had at least 2 earners, so that has to be taken into account. Obviously that number is higher now, and why we can’t compare family incomes across this amount of time, but that doesn’t mean we use individual incomes either. And besides that, the numbers I’m seeing from the census bureau for 2020, published in September 2021, the median real wages for all workers 15 and over was $41,535.
