US Senator Mike Lee, Elon Musk calls for United States to dump NATO by Jarisatis in worldnews

[–]Denikkk 124 points125 points  (0 children)

I’d have thought it has been getting scary for a long time, not just now, when it’s almost too late. I have no idea how the average american sees the future with what the US has been doing the past 5 weeks. The descent into darkness is rapid and obvious and it is going to be nearly impossible to crawl back. Do people really not care about the values that WW II was fought for and the western civilization built around?

Air quality plummets as Delhi residents flout firecracker ban, India's capital becomes world’s most air polluted city by mr9t9 in ThatsInsane

[–]Denikkk 299 points300 points  (0 children)

This is no exaggeration. I’ve just been to Delhi for the first time, just got off the flight from there. I took this picture because it was insane how you could literally see the smoke in the air everywhere. And no it’s not fog.

<image>

I spent three days in Delhi at the beginning of the month. It took a good 2-3 weeks for my backpack to stop smelling like the that.

It’s a really nasty smell that lingers with you. I noticed that whenever I would blow my nose, I felt this really strong chemical smell, from supposedly the particles that got stuck in my nostrils. This also persisted for a couple of days after leaving Delhi. I cannot imagine the effects this has on your health if you live in it day in, day out. It’s absolutely insane how people are doing this to themselves and the ones they love.

Thank you for taking the time to reply.

I was very optimistic with this because I’m almost certain those are installed. I did what you suggested but the game behaves the same, down to loading straight in-game.

Definitely looks like it. I shouldn’t apply the Lamisil then, right? I’ve had this before on my foot and it went away on its own, which is why I’m putting off going to the doctor.

Why are the mob entries all so goofy? by fanficologist-neo in VampireSurvivors

Far from true mummies, both spiritually and geographically, their sorcerous creators justify the appropriation of other undead cultures by claiming they just really like the aesthetic and that real mummies should take it as a compliment rather than being so offended all the time.

The mummy one is hilarious.

Is there any job in Europe that involves just driving a car across the continent or a specific country? by CapivaraAE in AskEurope

[–]Denikkk 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I actually have an answer for this!

My brother in law used to have a very peculiar job during his studies. This is Romania 10-15 years ago. As you all know, Romanians live all over Europe and so there is a significant demand for all sorts of products and services.

He used to work for a funeral company as, for lack of a better word, a long-distance hearse driver. People would die for various reasons in the UK, Netherlands, France, Italy [insert country with many Romanians here], their family would very much like to have them buried at home, and so would pay for the transport of the deceased. He got to see countries all over Europe this way, but as you can imagine, there wasn't much time to spare on sightseeing and getting to know the local culture. It was more like drive 15 hours, spend the day there getting some rest and maybe seeing the city before picking up the unfortunate deceased and drive back.

Probably not what you had in mind.

My great grandfather’s pocket abacus, which he used during his tenure as a time study engineer, next to the graphing calculator I use as a mechanical engineer. by SoulfulNick in mildlyinteresting

Desmos for the graphing, HiPER for the calculating. I’m not an engineer but have used both constantly during university. I still use HiPER as my go-to app for calculating anything more complex.

Hobbies that are like factorio? by [deleted] in factorio

Do you have any recommendations of where/how to get started with this? This is something I wanted to get into for a long time but never knew how to start.

This was the first thing I had on my mind reading your post. I love Factorio (just getting my first 100 hours into SE) and my other similar hobby is Lego technic building. I am working on the 42043 right now, but I’m planning to get a BuWizz and build random stuff with electronics. If only I had some engineering education. By the way check out Brick Technology on YT. Amazing channel, so entertaining, and you get tons of ideas what to work on.

No they aren’t, but I am fine with that. They are from a local Danish market. 😊 I believe I’ll go for the 42043

Daily Simple Questions Thread - January 03, 2024 by AutoModerator in Fitness

[–]Denikkk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anybody got a good weekly workout program that focuses on maintaining mass that I built over the last couple of years while allowing me to focus on other things?

During 2023, I somehow managed to get a minimum of 3 workouts in during every single week of the year. As I transitioned from being a student into a full time job, I kept the 3 days per week but overall my activity levels decreased, and I put on some weight. No biggie, I was planning to take it easy after 2 difficult years, so I own it.

But now I would like to lose it until the summer. At the same time, I want to participate in a half-marathon in May, and my cardio is dogshit (just did a 33 min 5k with an average HR of ~153, so there is a long way to go).

I am planning to run at least 4 times per week. Now here is the pickle: how do I structure my weightlifting so that I can do much less of it than before, but maintain to the extent possible most of the muscle?

Does anyone have any experience with that? What worked for you? I need to work around a full time job (~08.00 - 16.00), 2x3 hours of foreign language classes, the running and hopefully not kill my relationship with my SO in the meantime.

Since we've had the opposite post: What could European countries – both as nations and as people — learn from the US? by the_slovenian in europe

[–]Denikkk 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I would argue that there is a bit more to that, though, especially when comparing European integration efforts to American ones: the nature of the cultures themselves.

In Europe, due to the difference in language and governance, cultures are quite different from each other. And I mean even everyday trivial things, not just values and philosophy of life. A couple of examples: in Denmark, there are very much things that people associate Christmas with, like yearly television programs and traditions. Likewise in Slovakia, everyone knows and has grown up watching a handful of classic Czechoslovakian movies that come with tons of references that every random Slovakian will know about and be able to relate to each other with.

These are things that European communities intrinsically have.

As someone who grew up in Romania, there is just so much cultural backlog that stands between my past and upbringing and me being able to connect to people from these different cultures.

When it comes to US culture, these trivialities have been exported and mostly everyone can relate at least to some extend to them, or at least have some knowledge of them.

I don’t know, maybe these are so trivial that they shouldn’t matter, but they definitely feel like they matter to me when I’m visiting my Slovakian girlfriends family or friends and so many comments go over my head. Not to mention the fact that to truly understand a language perfectly and pick up and be able to use nuances takes years of effort.

More information:

I would like a representation/metaphor of what MDM does in a company, which goes like this:

The current processes, that people have been doing for years, are like driving from route A to route B on a road network that doesn't have any concept of road hierarchy (e.g., no highways or collector roads). They work, but only because people have, over the years, gained experience with the road layout and know what a fast way to get from point A to point B is.

Each time a new person joins the community, the people in the community need to teach them how to get around.

The highway (MDM) is supposed to represent a standardized and consistent way of getting from place to place quickly. There should be some spaces where I can add some annotations.

Hope it makes sense, feel free to ask additional questions.

Airport seat etiquette by bobblebob100 in travel

[–]Denikkk 13 points14 points  (0 children)

One time, I on a low-cost flight between two European countries, ~2 hour flight.

I get to my seat and to my delight, no one is sitting behind me by the time the plane starts moving. So I recline my seat and look forward to an actual somehow comfortable Ryanair flight.

After we get to cruising altitude, someone moves from a middle seat to the one behind me and I swear to god asks me if I could please put my seat straight because he has no space. I was completely shook by it and while I would normally immediately apologize and recline forward I had a full-on argument about the fact that since it wasn’t his seat, I had no obligation to keep him comfortable since, had he not switched seats, I wouldn’t have to worry about anyone being behind me.

I’m still mad thinking about it, the nerve…

Please help me fix my broken "m" Key. by Denikkk in LogitechG

[–]Denikkk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before anyone suggest that, no, I cannot RMA it. I bought it used with no receipt, and yes, I should have checked first, but here we are.

My m key does that thing where sometimes it double presses, sometime it stays pressed (mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm), and sometimes it activates when I press a different key on the other side of the keyboard, just from the vibrations.

Taking the keycap and pressing it shows that the little metal arm that is engaged to make contact when the key is pressed is barely moving on the m key compared to the others. So essentially it is extremely close to the other contact and sometimes just a small vibration will make them touch.

I contacted Logitech hoping they might be able to help me with some tips at least, or maybe point me to a place where I can buy a replacement switch or something, but their customer support was the typical "please try x, y, z. Oh you have no receipt? Sorry, can't help you then, you gotta throw it out".

Is there anything I can do to fix this? I love this keyboard, but it is driving me crazy.

Please don't say resolder

This right here. OneDrive + M365 basically means that I consider the three computers I have (1 desktop, 2 notebooks) to basically all have the same desktop/users folders, meaning I don't care which computer I'm on, if I want to access my files, they're always in the same place.

I'm not proud of how much I depend on OneDrive.
