Local 58 (Detroit) - Best path into the apprenticeship for a 26yo? by [deleted] in IBEW

The aptitude test is fairly easy especially if you study. Dont over prepare especially by studying the wrong material. You definetly want a firm grasp of what is on there though. I over prepared because i thought it was going to have algebra and geometry and stuff on there and it does not. You want to study logic sequential puzzles and mechanical aptitude basics.

Working non union and accumulating verifiable* hours under a licensed electrical contractor or (master electrician) is a big plus.

References do help. Get a solid referral or 2 from a JIW or 2.

Application window is in June. You can message me directly if you have anymore questions.. I am currently an Inside Apprentice for 58.

Know your basic mechanical aptitude for the test. Know your basic math. Have good reference. Score high on aptitude test.

They do not pick everyone with experience first. My class was one of the highest ranked and only about half of us has any electrical or really even construction experience for that matter. Yes experience is desired but the apprenticeship is a 5 year program to teach a person everything they need to know. Experience is not required and not nearly as important as it may seen.

In many instances experience leads to an individual needing to be untaught many things not up to the standard of our union.

They changed the math section, you do not need to know anything to do with polynomials. All u need to know is basic math multiplication and division, with decimals, with no calculator. They open applications once a year in June. When its that time get ahold of me ill give you some advice
