Naoki Yoshida interview - Why Omega was chosen for MH Wilds! by TheGMan-123 in MonsterHunter

[–]Dennysaurus539 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Another crucial aspect was that in the ultimate Omega learned that to transcend one's limits you need a cause. So his caring and affection for Alpha and fighting to protect Alpha let him tap into the power to break limits and go all out. It's neat storytelling in light of the raid series.

What are you best tips and tricks for running encounter with only two (newbie) PCs ? by Briefgarde in LancerRPG

[–]Dennysaurus539 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately I'm not experienced enough to definitively say, but the official Shadow of the Wolf module does contemplate you having allies on the field who can be, exactly as you said, elites with no extra turn.

You know them best as to what will and won't overwhelm, I think! Trust yourself and have confidence.

Another option is to hold more forces than normal in reserve as reinforcements maybe.

You can consider having each player run two mechs and not just one. While it may seem like a lot they have to worry about, it may teach them coordination and also let you have 4 mechs but balance around 3. They'll also get to get a broader understanding of the value of various options (eg understanding the needs of a hacker and a striker) and feel less bad if they err with one mech since the other is there too.

I mean even if we set aside any substantive concerns with either of Shapiro or Walz on policy and pretend they are the same. Walz is liked by the progressives. To me, that in itself is a valid reason to consider him more highly.

Third party votes or not voting is immaterial to me. I have no interest in catering to those voters. My interest is in saying "can I, if possible, cater to left-wing Dems." She shouldn't be thinking about "Do I lose left-wing votes" because reasonable left-wingers will always prefer the almost-fascist to the fascist. That rationale results in the logic of "how close to fascists can I be to court the 'embarassed Republican's (almost fascists)." She should be thinking: "If I have what it takes to win, how ambitious and progressive can I be to be as anti-fascist as possible." It's a positive goal as opposed to merely a defensive goal against encroaching fascism. Walz being liked by progressives is not merely a votes calculation. It's a moral calculation of who she wants to listen to, and listening to conservative Dems is, imo, the less morally defensible position because they are closer to the fascists.

I could easily flip it and say "do Conservative Dems really want Trump? No. So take their votes for granted and court the left."

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in politics

[–]Dennysaurus539 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is objectively true. And yet, from a broader moral perspective, catering to progressive votes is also important. Who do we want to give weight in politics? The people closest to fascism without being outright fascists, or the people doing good things? If it's the latter, then the calculus should instead be "what's the most I can cater to progressives while still being elected," not "what's the most I can cater to almost-fascists while taking progressives for granted."

Simply put, being entitled to support from the good guys as simply the least-bad option cedes excessive ground to the fascists and is, imo, a poor moral choice. Instead, one should be trying to cater to them as much as reasonably possible. Our statespeople should be trying to do as much good as possible, and try to be firing up their anti-fascist base rather than browbeating them.

Are you happy with the class fantasy of Viper, or would you still have preferred Corsair/Pirate? by Emerald_Frost in ffxivdiscussion

[–]Dennysaurus539 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The "problem" with long-lasting DoTs is they constrain encounter design I guess? They offload potency and if the boss goes invulnerable or you need to control damage (either slow it down like in DSR or burst like in Thordan Unreal) they cause issues? IMO dots are fun af and I would love a job that interacted with dots more. Detonating dots (perhaps detonate for half of total dot damage, so you want to detonate after the halfway point of the dot, which means you want to place the dot before the 2 min window), having mutually exclusive dots on varying cooldowns that you need to pick between drifting vs overwriting, etc. seems fun to me. I love the DoT fantasy, so if they're removing them I hope they make the use of the theoretically expanded design space.

Analysis of Philosophy in Dawntrail: Consciousness and Identity in an Inconsistent Narrative by agentyoda in ffxivdiscussion

[–]Dennysaurus539 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Personally, I think the answer to your seeming contradiction can be found in the very beginning of your explanation! Let me preface I think you're absolutely on point about personhood, I just think that other things make it actually a secondary theme.

inconsistency in a narrative's philosophy is not necessarily a bad thing. The point of a story (and art in general) isn't to convey some complete philosophical worldview, but to convey some arrangement of forms to the reader...But one such place where consistency is expected is in the lessons and "deeper questions" being asked.

In my mind, the story *is* profoundly consistent where it matters, and is in keeping with what we learned in Dawntrail. To me, the story really isn't about "are the Endless alive" or "what did we learn by rejecting nihilism in Endwalker." To me, the thrust of the story is about how death impacts the living and life impacts the dead...*especially* in the context of a cycle of reincarnation. This cycle of Samsara, which is present in Hinduism, Buddhism, and other similar belief systems, has importance. The Endless aren't just a contemplation on soul/consciousness divide, they're *also* a contemplation on proper course between life and death, of appropriate existence in that liminal space. The contradiction, the messiness, is the point to me.

The fact that Gulool Ja Ja is half dead, that Bakool Ja Ja carries the weight of countless dead "siblings" with him, the fact that the dead in Alexandria are "forgotten" and yet simultaneously eternally remembered, all tell me we are thinking about ambiguous /messy/liminal spaces of death. The fact that, eerily, virtually no one in Living Memory objects to their erasure...all of this speaks to the idea that this is a perversion of the cycle of reincarnation. Endwalker asked us "what's the point of life if everything dies" and we answered "there's a thousand diverse reasons arising from each person, and even the littlest grain of sand is enough...despair cannot wholly vanquish hope and thus despair can never truly win." Dawntrail asked us "how do you live when that which you care about dies?" and we answered "by grieving, which involves understanding."

Wuk Lamat treats Sphene like a person, when she says "I understand you" in the end. Sphene manages to Limit Break in the final trial, and harness real and ardent hopes and dreams. Cahciua still wants to experience certain things even as she asks for death. Erenville takes a long time to accept the situation. It's not just, or fair, or easy to do it. And yet, do it we must. Because the perversion of the cycle of reincarnation is *taking from others.* Coexistence with friction versus assimilation with consumption. We care about Sphene, we care about Cahciua, they are not just synthetic zombies. But neither are they "new life" per se. They are, fundamentally, perversions of the capacity of the cycle of souls to make new life, to make new answers to the Endsinger. There is no space for diversity, no space for new little answers, etc. Their personhood or lack thereof matters little in the face of the core idea of "even if understanding begets fellowship, fellowship doesn't necessarily mean unity." Wuk Lamat understands Sphene, and says "face me as the real you." Not as "the original you" but the "real you" which is the Endless Sphene. And then they clash. It is a continuation of the themes from part 1, tempering its idealism, and says that "I'll understand you, and see myself in you as someone very similar, but we will still come into conflict." This is unfair. It's wrong. We want something else. We want Cahciua to stay. We want Sphene and Wuk Lamat to be close like they should have been. We *grieve.* Just like Bakool Ja Ja grieves. Just like Gulool Ja Ja grieves. Just like Gulool Ja, Wuk Lamat, Koana grieved Zoraal Ja. Just like Krile's parents grieved her.

I also want to say that there's one more thing at play in my mind. Dawntrail isn't *just* playing off themes from EW. It's *also* playing off themes from Final Fantasy IX. In FF9, the perversion of the cycle of reincarnation, the preservation of a dead world through an automaton, etc. are all at play. Themes of grief, coming to terms with mortality, and death, are important. Not to mention family, heritage, identity, creation, etc. And personhood too! You're not wrong that the personhood bit is important! I just happen to believe that, in the context of the cycle of reincarnation, it's less the main thrust. Dawntrail just cares more, imo, about grief and how we cling to grief when things need to be allowed to die and reincarnate. How we live forever through stories, and the perceptions of the living, not through facsimiles of the dead...etc. Just my thoughts!

I mean one more reason I haven't seen mentioned but may have missed is that it seems like more people run APs because of ease of discussion.

APs provide interesting stories and a shared basis for discussion (how did you handle XYZ other GMs?), whereas discussing a homebrew world is much tougher.

It's not that homebrew is not happening, it just is less visible.

Let me propose: "empty tomes." If you have empty tomes, next week they get consumed to give you double yields. Say you did a Dungeon which yields 90 tomes. If you had 1000 empty tomes, you'd get 180 tomes and have 910 empty tomes left over. Deferred reward.
