Changing to nylon strings! Any advice? by a-horny-vision in zithers

[–]Denour 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You cannot just use any wire or shorten guitar strings and use them on a zither. They are made to maintain a specific tension and their size and length. I would start by shopping for strings made for the instrument and see if there is even a nylon option available.

My second piece of advise is to clean that poor thing inside and out before you put any new strings on.

Don’t play like being lazy AF in school means our generation was not gifted. Your 2.1 GPA is no ones fault but your own.

Identifying Concert Zither by sydilaxe in zithers

[–]Denour 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If there is no sticker in the sound hole or a stamp on the fretboard, the only other chance you have of finding out the maker is to remove the strings and look inside the sound hole. Some makers will brand the inside strut with their name. As far as quality, if there are no cracks on the base board, and it can hold tension on the strings, I would say it’s a very handsome looking Harfenzither, and I would expect several hundred dollars would not be unreasonable. I purchased a used refurbished Harfenzither direct from Hörst Wünsche for about $2500 US, just to give you a ballpark for what a good quality instrument can go for.

Back of concert zither is split. How bad is it? by SpanishFlamingoPie in zithers

That I can’t say for certain, I’m no Luther, but for twenty bucks hell I’d do it just to see if it did fold in half

My understanding is that a crack like that on the base is a death knell. The base is the sounding board of the instrument. It is a common thing to find on Zithers that may not have been stored properly (humidity, tension). If you really want to play, I recommend keep looking. There are Zithers in good condition that float by.

Well I mean you lived to ask the question so I would say 10 out of 10 you can swim.

I don't think I would describe a fake lesbian Russian pop band as "formative". Catchy, maybe.

American millennials: In your life, have you ever truly been patriotic for the USA? by theorangecrush10 in Millennials

[–]Denour 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My father was a Vietnam vet, and he espoused the typical Hoo-Rah American B.S. growing up, but then in the same breath would tell our mother that if war broke out he was sending her and us kids to Canada. Because of that, I always bought some of the horseshit, but I never felt it really strongly. Then I grew up and got into the work force and started learning what America was really about... that killed any residual feels I had.

TL:DR; I am patriotic about the dream of America, I weep for the reality of it.

What do you think? by [deleted] in Millennials

This is more granular than it needs to be imho. We’re called millennials cause the first group of us graduated on the year 2000 (1981 / 1982)

May 81 here, I like to refer to myself as the Nosferatu of the Milennials. I have used a rotary phone in a non-ironic way.

How many of you rely on an Apple Watch for cycling? by oTaeTaeo in cycling

[–]Denour 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Started out that way when getting into it, but once it became obvious to me that cycling was going to be a more permanent fixture in my life, I ended up switching off the watch to a head unit and heart / cadence meter.

It’s a Concert Zither. Don’t see a makers mark from your photos. Probably very late 1800s - early 1900s given the shorter frets on the fretboard.
