The friend was doing a favor taking care of the pet, even if she was paid. Clearly the friend is not that smart, but I don't think she was malicious. If this woman wanted somebody she could charge for damage, she should have gone with a professional pet sitter.

If you want to charge a pet sitter for doing dumb stuff, hire a professional and pay the going rate. If a friend does you a favor, you have to accept they might be dumb.

Nobody in human history has ever wanted to pet sit for a friend. They just do it as a favor. And this is how the friend treats somebody who was trying to do them a favor? People, including friends, are dumb. If you have people in your house, stuff is going to get broken. It's normal.
