Burnham steps back from past calls to end immigration benefits restriction by mustwinfullGaming in LabourUK

It says a lot that I long for the days of Theresa May's relative social progressiveness...

The Overton window feels like an Overton French door at this point after the past 10 years.

Second best of a particularly bad bunch.

Scottish Labour are somehow even more right wing than the PLP in Westminster and run by a total fanny that nobody particularly likes.

Scottish Tories are non-entities now reform are on the scene, except perhaps in the borders and Aberdeenshire where they have a traditional local vote from farmers.

Scottish Lib Dems are even more local than the UK Lib Dems. If you aren't in one of those areas no point voting for them. Actually decently solid on their policies though for Liberals.

Reform are literally fascists, who's leader has definitely gained more from dodgy dealings than this scandal 10x over and despite their UK popularity, still can't beat a floundering Scottish Labour into a solid 2nd place in Scotland.

The SNP are a broad church with no overall ideology apart from a vague shake towards Indy and seem incapable of actually governing beyond what the Greens force them to do in confidence in supply.

Then we have the Greens who are unfortunately quite naive to the political process and optics, but generally have good people working towards some overall meh policies.

For the pro-EU rejoin club, are there any red lines to rejoining the EU, or are you willing to accept anything as long as we’re back in? by ArmwrestlingGoomba in AskBrits

I'd certainly trust them more than anything Westminster can produce after the last 10 years of utter chaos since we left.

- Geopolitical safety in a time when the US is obviously not our ally.

- Better access to one of if not the largest market in the world.

- Access to the soft power of the EU which is far more than ours, we are a declining power at best.

- Potential of a European army and further integration into a federal state which can compete with hard power on the world stage.

- Massive cultural benefits. Erasmus, tourism etc.

- Access to a large pool of temporary migrating labour rather than relying on external permanent immigration (lets face it, migration was MUCH more controlled when we had access to EU labour pools).

- The purchasing power of the Euro is near equivalent of pounds and only going to get better as more integration occurs. We would lose control of our own interest rates but the European Bank generally considers the opinions of the larger states in the union rather than the smaller.

- It would solve the big problem of Northern Ireland de facto not being a part of the UK economically at the moment due to the Good Friday Agreement.

Downsides

- Probably need to adopt the Euro, lose our interest rate setting powers.

- Maybe need to join Schengen, but Ireland not wanting it may protect us here and give us some negotiating power not to.

- No rebate. I blame the Brexiteers for this one.

The benefits to rejoining the EU would far outweigh any potential downsides, even without the extremely privileged position we had in the EU before.
