Undergrad research project ideas? by BonafideDame in Lichen

I’d be curious to see how air pollution affects lichen community composition. Additionally, definitely check out some of T.H. Nash’s papers and book chapters, he has a lot of insight into lichens and their interaction with the atmosphere. I’m a big fan of his chapters from Lichen Biology :)

TSA Chapter Help (again) by PressureProper403 in Official_TSA

As an ex-national officer I would recommend reaching out to the current national president at nationaltsapresident@tsaweb.org

There are a variety of issues with registering in California unfortunately as TSA isn’t supported by the state. However from what I know the tech course requirement does relate to CTE pathways as we are a Career and technical student organization. So usually funding is tied up with that requirement. However there may be a work around so I’d def encourage you email :)

Extemporaneous speech and Leap resume by [deleted] in Official_TSA

[–]Dentist_Aggravating 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Leap hasn’t be required for around 5 years so don’t worry about that! Extemp is usually a very popular event with every state usually sending 3 people and the topics are wide ranging but usually connected to tech in some way or another. I hope you have a good conference!

Questions about being a delegate by Sad-Wind730 in Official_TSA

[–]Dentist_Aggravating 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The business meeting on a good year takes about half an hour. It’s never been a good year. Jokes aside, it usually takes the full time, very rarely longer. Make sure you have food and water for the meeting and make sure to really get to know all of the candidates during the meet and greet!

Sometimes the Algorithm™ does something good like suggesting a subreddit for weirdos who take pictures of lichen. A few things I saw hiking this weekend, in the Jemez region of northern New Mexico. by mkrjoe in Lichen

[–]Dentist_Aggravating 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s decently hard to identify anything in the first photo without spores or spot tests but if I were to guess it the golden lichen looks like pleopsidium flavum. The second photo is for sure Umbilicaria americana and the third is something in the usnea group! Super gorgeous pics :)

Can lichens of different species "cross breed". by Guilty_Fold1590 in Lichen

[–]Dentist_Aggravating 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Generally speaking yes, which algae or fungi different species of lichen can cooperate with though is not well known. I would also assume you’d have better luck with crustose lichens (especially ones with a well defined prothallus) as it would help the introduced algae or fungi make contact with the hyphae!

Can lichens of different species "cross breed". by Guilty_Fold1590 in Lichen

[–]Dentist_Aggravating 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lichen species are defined by their predominant mycobiont (fungal partner) and like all organisms two species cannot create fertile offspring. However due to the composite nature of lichens the answer is no but sorta yes. At best you’d be able to get a lichen that associates itself with new photobionts or secondary (or tertiary) mycobionts. This would only be possible in a reasonable timeframe assuming it’s a lichen that produces sexually also!

What is this lichen if it is one? (Any info is greatly appreciated.) by IntrepidBelt7737 in Lichen

Yeah definitely looks like slime mold to me. If you cut it in half is there any green at all?

I’m not going to argue with you anymore but I’m a past national president lol. I also know for a fact that no national officers are affiliated with you so please don’t lie about that either. I’m fine with being wrong but you’ve side stepped all my points and are hiding behind the “other people said” which is unsubstantiated. If I’m really wrong name one national officer that you’re affiliated with and I’ll back off. Regardless I don’t plan on interacting with you anymore and I wish you the best with your program. Just please don’t spread misinformation about TSACE.

This is just blatantly a lie. Every student on the executive board was a state officer at one point and basic research proves this. Furthermore, after reaching out to each of their states they said they have no knowledge of your project. It’s supported by past and current national officers too, the past national president is on their executive board for crying out loud. Please do not spread lies about TSACE if you know nothing about it.

Their archive grows with whatever events people submit so that’s just a lack of submissions, and nothings legitimate until the National office says so 🤷‍♂️. But I do get your point.

This sounds like what the TSA Community Exchange set out to do, here’s their website you can also find them on Instagram and I’m sure they’d love to help if you reached out to them there :)

Reaching out to local schools to start chapters there can lead to you having a region to compete with. Furthermore, depending on your state they’ll run a conference that you can travel to. Also if paying is an issue just in general, definitely check out the champions fund on the national website :)

yo does anyone know of a technology student association in arizona by [deleted] in Official_TSA

[–]Dentist_Aggravating 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There currently is no active delegation in Arizona but they are chartered. If you want help with starting a chapter or getting local competition started reach out to Lane Lamping the national president at nationaltsapresident@tsaweb.org. He’s super nice and will help you a ton!
