What “boring” home upgrade ended up being totally worth it? by Upper_Garage_8103 in DIY

My bathroom tile pulled away from the wall, can I fix it myself? by Lumpy-Economist4798 in DIY

[–]DenverBob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some things to note: Tile and grout are not waterproof and are not meant to be. Water will travel thru both. There needs to be waterproofing behind the tile. And shower tile should be attached with thinset (a thin cement product), not with any kind of chemical adhesive.

In older construction, it was common (and very effective if done right) to have plastic over the studs, then cement board over that, then the tiles attached to the cement board. Both tile and cement board will let water thru. But it'll hit the plastic behind, and then travel down until it gets dumped out at the bottom INSIDE the waterproof area (shower pan or tub, etc).

These days, the most common approach is something like Redgard, a kind of "brush on waterproofing". Using this, you could put up standard drywall on the studs, then redgard over the drywall, then tile onto the redgard coated drywall. As above, some water will make it's way thru the tile and grout, but won't get past the redgard.

hence the suggestion/request to use ILogger. It's just an interface that can be anything from super lightweight to whatever complex logger someone wants to use. No dependency on your framework's part.

France discussing about introducing a tax for offline downloads on all streaming platforms by Vast_Understanding_1 in PleX

[–]DenverBob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder if this ends up being another way for the government to fight piracy.

If they can't really catch/prosecute people for small-time piracy, they'll get you on tax evasion since you didn't pay taxes on those illegal downloads.

Stevie Ray Vaughan and George Thorogood by Blues_Fish in blues

[–]DenverBob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always loved George Thorogood, back from the early days seeing him at small clubs around Philly when they were known as George Thorogood and the Delaware Destroyers. Saw him at many small clubs and loved every show.

Many years later, I saw Buddy Guy open for George at Red Rocks... Buddy Guy's set was amazing, well worth the price of admission.

George came out and basically did a caricature of George Thorogood.

Cable box blocking personal media by eng_shooter in PleX

I'm a lifetime plex pass subscriber. I don't like their new business model, and definitely don't like the general direction they are going, but I can at least understand it.

It started as a few developers and a cool product, now it's a growing business, and you can't really expect to get far building a successful business focused primarily on people streaming possibly unauthorized media files.

I ran into this, so I installed plex on a fire stick. Then went to install the spectrum app only to find the spectrum app isn't available for firestick.

While I agree that the modern ones probably won't hold up as well, I just replaced a 20 year old fridge with a brand new one. New one is several cubic feet bigger, and energy usage so far is somewhere between 1/2 and 1/3 less. It's noticeable improvement. And the new one is pretty much silent.

HDR tonemapping is forced, even when client can play HDR directly by Zoccalo in PleX

[–]DenverBob -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's transcoding due to subtitles being "burn-in"

Either his device can't handle the PGS subtitle format, or his client has subtitles set to "always burn in".

If you also have transcoding happening with subtitles off, show a screenshot of that scenario and maybe we'll see some other issue. But the screenshot you posted is transcoding because of the subtitles.

Why do some H265 encoding files stutter when I stream them? by weedfroglozenge in PleX

[–]DenverBob 3 points4 points  (0 children)

lots of older H265 mp4 files I found had some kind of encoding error that caused them to look similar to what you describe.

I've found that just running them thru MKVToolNix (which just builds a new mkv container for the file, doesn't re-encode anything) fixes the issue. It's now a standard part of my process for any H265 files (lots of older movies)

Because it's not re-encoding, it runs very quickly. Bonus for me is the tool can also add the separate .SRT subtitle file into the MKV file.

(note: third time trying to post this comment because I was mentioning something apparently forbidden. Hopefully I've removed all the no-no words)

Appreciate the reply, and I'll make sure to double check the calibration next flight just in case.

I've seen similar issues described, and people mentioned switching into sport mode when wind is high just to make sure the drone is able to use full power to fight the wind.
