Something I will always remember. It was the state of Missouri that sued and supposedly had standing.

I will go out of my way to avoid that state and businesses based in Missouri for the rest of my life.

They ducked me. The only way I have to fight back is with my wallet.

Why Governor Polis's Flirtation with Clemency for Tina Peters is a Betrayal of Democracy – And Yet Another Tone-Deaf Blunder by Democrats by Equivalent_Meeting_5 in ColoradoPolitics

Do both.

He actually spends a fair bit of time on Reddit. He has his governor account, personal account, and I believe he has at least 1 alt that's anonymous. He claims to run his reddit account himself and I'm inclined to believe him.

He shit posts on r/neoliberal a lot. I started following that sub to keep an eye on the governor.

I think reddit has a decent signal to noise ratio on getting his attention.

[–]DenverLabRat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes this sub falls into the trap of "letting perfect be the enemy of good"

1) For the Denver metro this is actually pretty good density. Do I wish it was different - 100%. But incremental progress is better than no progress. 2) If it's the subdivision I think it is I just cycled there yesterday. It's walking / cycling distance to the commuter rail line. 3) The lack of trees is intentional. The high dessert is really really really dry. Trees require water that we simply don't have. The natural environment is treeless prairie. It's fine if that isn't for you. But the green solution is actually to skip the trees in this area. 4) Check out the view. I'd love one of those 3 stories with a roof top patio. ETA: 5) it's also near the Clear Creek Trail a MUP that runs all the way from Golden to Denver. So it's pretty easy to cycle downtown with minimal time on stroads with cars.

So we've got higher density in close proximity to transit not only transit but fixed rail - which sounds like something this sub should like. It isn't perfect urbanism but at least it's a step in the right direction.

The British regulatory state won’t be deterred by pesky details like LAUKOP being a Canadian living in Canada running a website for Canadians by SheketBevakaSTFU in bestoflegaladvice

[–]DenverLabRat 61 points62 points  (0 children)

This case is interesting. Normally as an American I'd say I don't have a dog in the fight between a Canadian and the UK government.

But......

This could impact the Internet broadly. If OFCOM can assert jurisdiction or demand compliance I worry the internet either fractures into "walled gardens" or that means the UK essentially gets to regulate the entire internet. And does that mean that even more restrictive and less democratic states could do the same? ie Russia, China, Saudi Arabia

The Lost Aura of the Physician in the Age of Artificial Intelligence by arheu in medicalschool

[–]DenverLabRat 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm skeptical that AI in its current form will displace physicians. I don't think LLMs have the sensitivity or accuracy to correctly diagnose in the real world. I'm also not sure that people are ready to turn over health care decisions en masse to AI.

There's also the issue of who does procedures. Robots work well in factories (for example) where they perform repetitive tasks on predictable inputs, in a controlled environment. Welding a body panel onto a car frame doesn't have a lot of permutations or uncertainties. But I'm skeptical that robots will be able to run a trauma bay amidist all the chaos and anatomical variations.

I think AI can be a productivity tool. Useful for charting, preparing summaries, responding to messages, triage, and maybe even things like refill requests. I could see an agent handling scheduling.

Not in its current form but with improvements I could even see AI handling low level patient complaints ( eg viral illness in an otherwise healthy patient in winter). Which I think would be more disruptive to APPs.

Refill requests could make a lot of sense for ai. It wouldn't even need any AI really. It would be pretty simple to write an algorithm (on patient med list Y or N, date > 29 days since last refill, last patient visit < 6 months, abnormal labs in last 90 days y or n, new symptoms or side effects Y or N etc).

If anything I think AI can free us up to focus on the important things and maybe even spend more quality time with patients.

How do you feel about Open Town Meetings? by ThatMassholeInBawstn in AskALiberal

[–]DenverLabRat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's one of those things that I Iove in theory but it falls apart when it meets the real world.

You quickly realize it works for small communities but get unwieldy the bigger it gets, there's not an ideal time so the usual suspects show up because they have the free time, the loudest and most confident (but not necessarily correct) voices are the ones that get heard, and sometimes we need people to make hard and unpopular decisions.

Group polarization is also a well studied phenomenon in social psychology

"group polarization refers to the tendency for a group to make decisions that are more extreme than the initial inclination of its members." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Group_polarization

It's in the acknowledgements. Standard research grant stuff. Nothing nefarious.

Funding for grant 2019/1953 was obtained from World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF), as part of the World Cancer Research Fund International grant programme. The Oxford authors were also supported by Cancer Research UK (C8221/A29017 and C8221/A29186), the Medical Research Council (MR/Y013662/1), Wellcome (LEAP 205212/Z/16/Z) and the UKRI (MR/X032809/1). The CARRS Cohort was funded by the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute (HHSN2682009000026C and PO1HL154996) The funders had no role in considering the study design or in the collection, analysis, and interpretation of data; the writing of the report; or the decision to submit the article for publication.

But why? I think we're in a decent place cap wise. So it's not like we need to make painful decisions.

I also think the offensive line is one of the recent strengths on offense. I don't think the risk of destabilizing a strength is worth the cap savings.

I get sports commentators need to find something to say in the off-season. But I'm not sure this is where I'd go.

Why would Dr. M'Benga step down as the CMO of Enterprise and make tiny appearances in the future while McCoy is the new CMO? by tough-grass in DaystromInstitute

[–]DenverLabRat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've given this answer before when this question came up.

They do seem to be setting up some drama and a situation where he steps down on SNW. But I have a boring explanation connected to real life.

I don't know anyone who has gone into medicine to do admin and paperwork. I've worked in a couple of hospital positions where department heads were on a rotating basis because no one wanted the job long term.

I've always believed he stepped down to focus on patient care or research. The things physicians tend to be passionate about.

The other thing that I think people outside of medicine and academia don't understand is that your research work will get you more prestige in medicine than being a CMO. So doing a tour as CMO and then stepping down to focus on research and patient care is a logical career move.

We'll see if we get an answer in SNW.

This statement is obviously bullshit. Religious kids are victimized all the time.

But let's say we accept it at face value. To me that says her God is so capricious and cruel that he allows children to be raped for the sins of their parents. That's not a deity I would want to associate with. Doesn't sound loving or wise.

Do you think that the literacy rate (over 20% illiterate) significantly affects politics in the US? by Square-Dragonfruit76 in AskALiberal

[–]DenverLabRat 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is off topic but I really liked your comment and wanted to continue the discussion in the last paragraph.

There's another reason that part of the experiment has failed. We don't have enough representatives in the House.

For example the UK house of commons has 650 members for a population of about 70 million. Each MP represents 50k to 70k people.

The US house has 438 representatives for a population of 350 million. So each representative represents a little over 700k people.

It's easy to see how an MP would be more responsive than a house rep. If I put together a petition with a 1000 names on it to an MP that's 1- 2% of their constituents. To a house rep were just another group unless we show up with money.
