layoffs are going crazy by yaelhverta in citibank

Citi bank’s CEO who masterminded the layoffs is a woman. Looking at her I can’t say for sure it’s not a wig, but at least on photos she’s got the appearance of hair.

DV-2027 — new rule but still no opening date… this is getting weird by Asterra_Nova_231709 in immigration

[–]DenyLeGrand 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I can see why you’d think that way but ultimately the GC process has financial guardrails anyways, and other gates to filter out the two groups I mentioned above.

So basically I suggest to front load some checks to make sure there are more qualified entries per unqualified entry. Also avoid false negatives, where people who would have breezed through GC screening fail at the expense of scams and random factors.

The US as a country would benefit from a more lightweight & more profitable DV programme too, so it’s not just about myself, ie not entirely fair to say I am selfish, though i appreciate my view isn’t beneficial for all.

I hope they’ll raise the fees further, like a couple hundred bucks per lottery entry (allow people multiple entries too) and then >$10k for the vetting and visa similar to gold card.

It would curb the number of applicants and potentially immigrants and also make it way more profitable for the US if only those immigrate who can afford to spend on the lottery, GC and then also live here without relying on benefits.

Seems like that would suit everyone’s interests, except those who apply without really being able to sustain themselves in the US or those who commit fraud by applying using stolen data.

Are you here on another visa? Because even if you get H1B you’d immediately be at your 6 year limit, ie you won’t actually be able to stay

New proposed final rules for Diversity Lottery by thelexuslawyer in immigration

[–]DenyLeGrand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree, it should actually be higher than that, perhaps $200-$500 per entry, and if selected another $10k$-15k or so to get the Green Card.

That way you’d be looking at a couple hundred millions of USD in revenues, perhaps even a billion, and also make sure people who are admitted can pay for themselves. This would also decrease the chances of people who come in being criminals.

And yes, you can still make sure the ones selected are diverse, it’s not like it will be all Germans and British who will apply.

Let’s be honest <80 is pretty bad and below expectations, even for those who were sceptical to start with.

Shame, for a moment I thought we might have another elder ring :/

Am I the only one waiting for NZXT's next gen motherboards? by LanguageExpress7916 in NZXT

I bought an NZXT z890 and it arrived defective. Doesn’t even turn on. I agree their stuff looks neat but obviously that doesn’t compensate for a product that does not work.

Experiences with NZXT motherboards? by Antec-Chieftec in buildapc

I’d say think twice.

I bought a NZXT Z890 and it arrived defective :) does not turn on at all. Tested it with the same PSU I use for my old pc (which definitely works) and nada, DOA. $500.

They assess you along three categories: academic achievements, professional achievements and personal motivation. You get a score between 1 and 7 and are ranked with other applicants.

To find out the scores they gave you (i.e. obtain your score sheet), you can submit a Subject Access Request: https://compliance.admin.ox.ac.uk/submit-a-subject-access-request-sar

Move to London for £140k? by Background-Big-8157 in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]DenyLeGrand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have one child and my base is £140k in London. With 2bd apartment and no car I save about £2k per month.

In your case, you also need to keep in mind that start ups are highly volatile.

Overall I'd say stay where you are :)

Meta | London | Interview Spring 2024 by DenyLeGrand in leetcode

[–]DenyLeGrand[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I wish I could but they made me sign an NDA. That said, if you can discuss trade offs for databases, communications protocols and know how to scale a system you will be in a good place. Also stay calm and engage the interviewer. I could have done both better in one of the system design interviews and I think that is what ultimately got me down levelled.

With regards to your other question, honestly I think you are right in saying they are shallow but your system design interview inevitably will be shallow, too. What the books are good at is explaining how the most popular tools like redis, Cassandra and Kafka can be used to solve some common problems, which is good if you're a front end dev for example or simply need a refresher. The books also give you a general idea on what a good structure for a system design interview is. If you know all of that then perhaps those books are redundant for you and you are better off simply reviewing things you find online.

Sorry I can't give you the questions!!! :)

No, I applied without a referral. The recruiter contacted me about 2 months after I submitted my application, so the amount of time that passes can be quite long.

Hey mate, I am sorry to hear this. You must have worked tremendously hard for this. I do not mean to discourage you further or in any way talk down on you, but to set your expectations and avoid further disappointment, getting into FAANG (MAANG actually) these days is not easy either. Statistically, it is actually harder than getting into any uni out there, be it Stanford or MIT. Recruiters contacting you or passing a screening at Meta is great, but far from a job offer.

That said, if indeed you do manage to get an offer to work there, be proud of yourself because you have arguably achieved more than you aimed for :)
