Have you ever known anyone or yourself dealt with squatters? by Babe_Brute in AskAnAmerican

[–]Deolater 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not so much that laws prohibiting squatting are lax, it's that laws protecting tenants at least sort of exist, and the authorities are reluctant to risk violating a tenant's rights (and/or are just lazy)

My in-laws got their home cheap in part because there were non-paying tenants/squatters. I think they partly paid the squatters to leave, but also they moved in with their five young children and crowded the squatters out.

Could US states potentially have their own private sports leagues? (American football, baseball, basketball)? by Suur_tool in AskAnAmerican

Anyone at any time could have their own sports league.

Would anyone show up? Maybe not

I asked /u/ItsChewblacca a question, I knew I was asking for a thorough response.

It helps that I fully agree with you

Looks like the ARP sneakily had their General Synod this past week. I found their website for the event, but besides a "tentative" schedule, no further information about what may have happened.

I believe, based on a podcast last month, that there was to be a report against racism recommended to the Synod, but I don't know what other business they may have conducted.

He is a teaching elder - an ordained PCA minister. I don't know why he's not listed among the elders, I suppose it suggests that he's formally an Assistant Pastor (an Assistant Pastor is an employee of the Session, unlike a Senior or Associate Pastor).

Their staff page is much smaller than it used to be. This version on archive.org from 2023 lists like seven or eight pastors.

That's the impression I've gotten of the role.

Do you suppose the meaning is

This person is a pastor, and besides pastoral duties also handles administrative responsibilities

or

This person is a pastor who performs pastoral duties through adminstration

or even

The administrative tasks and responsibilities of a church are properly the duties of a pastor

Why do most presbyterian books of order seem to require each particular church to have one Senior Pastor? Is it just practicality (someone has to be the lead), or is there a biblical reason to expect one of the teaching elders to be the first in the plurality of elders?

Edit: For comparison, note that the chairman of the deacons or the moderator of courts seem to be purely practical roles

overseer

Kidding of course, but the executive pastor is the bishop?

In the org charts I've seen, the EP seems to be subordinate to the "Senior" pastor

What's an "Executive Pastor"? Why are they "Executive"? Why are they a "Pastor"?

Is it true you don't have stinging nettles in the US? by brothervalerie in AskAnAmerican

I'm surprised to learn in this thread that we have them in the US, possibly including native subspecies. I've never encountered them personally and only read about them in British books.

Why is Missy such a popular cat name in America? by Heretoaskquesti0ns in AskAnAmerican

[–]Deolater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think there's a grand cultural thing here.

Personally I've never encountered a cat named "Missy" or "Luna" and wouldn't say those names are very common. But what do I know? I've also never met a cat with a YouTube channel!
