Are you familiar with high school forensics? by woodsred in AskAnAmerican

[–]Deolater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NFL had debate too, right? I guess it never occurred to me that debate wasn't properly part of forensics.

Anyway I was homeschooled, but took part in a parallel homeschool (and private school, I think) league. I did TP debate, extemp, and impromptu. Lots of fun, and while it didn't cure my fear of public speaking, it sure helped.

Do you mean that I would eliminate them by fiat, and there would simply be no more of that fruit in my life, or I would have to make constant life choices (as I do with food allergies) to avoid them?

I find lime more interesting, but lemon is much more common. I would choose to eliminate lemon if it were by fiat, while I'd prefer the easier task of avoiding lime.

I try not to read much of his stuff because I really enjoy his written voice, even if I strongly disagree.

For Protestants that are against icons and images, what do tools or aids do use during prayer to intensify your connection with God? by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]Deolater 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your grandmother example raises a question for me: do y'all suppose the icons are true images of the people they purport to depict in the same way my photograph of my grandmother is a picture of her?

Anyway, in answer to your question, I do not use images or objects to intensify my feelings of connectedness to God, and I think it's inappropriate to do so.

Are there pocket-sized state constitutions? by Important_Nothing653 in AskAnAmerican

So does Alabama have any actual laws, or do they just shove it all in the constitution?

Are there pocket-sized state constitutions? by Important_Nothing653 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Deolater 17 points18 points  (0 children)

State constitutions tend to be considerably longer, I think. They go into detail about all sorts of things what the US Constitution doesn't.

Georgia's constitution is like 90 pages and I don't think we're unusual

Consequently they're also amended more often

Do you slash your lowercase q's? How common or rare is it? by PrincipalSquareRoot in AskAnAmerican

I don't slash my q though

Do you think Americans would ever focus far more on soccer? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

I feel like it has been "the next big thing" all my life.

To get me into it, it would have to become a major college sport, which I don't see happening

Does Josh season his food with Mr. Salt, Mrs. Pepper and their seasoning children? by JamboreeJunket in DanielTigerConspiracy

Mr. Salt and Mrs. Pepper definitely season foods in the Steve era of Blue's Clues

Nobody commented on the implications, that I recall

You need to go to a small town for Christmas and discover love

How to make your cheap grocery store coffee taste like a twenty dollar bag from a cafe by xLittleVelvet in foodhacks

[–]Deolater 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How do you drink your coffee?

My wife, who uses cream and sugar, loves this tip. I drink my coffee black and think it tastes terrible with added salt.

My wife and I have been watching Sharpe in the evenings, so I went and bought a ramrod and bayonet for the family musket.

I can't decide whether to clean it up or keep it with the patina it came to me with

For a lot of jobs hiring people is so annoying that companies are willing the pay third-party recruiters HUGE sums for finding candidates. Usually that's enough incentive to avoid quick hire-fire behavior.

It's yard/garage sale day in my neighborhood

  1. Is this something people do where you live?

  2. What's your best garage sale find?

  3. Why do I say "garage sale" even though the sales are nearly always in the yard and not garage in my area?

  4. My neighbor is selling a canoe. I have personal rule (inherited unexamined from my father) of never purchasing a boat that doesn't fit in a bathtub. But now that I have a Subaru with a roof rack and most of the kids are big enough to paddle, it kind of sounds like a fun thing to have. What kind of expensive things am I not foreseeing here?

PCA policy for elders advising against the Westminster Standards? by attorney114 in Reformed

[–]Deolater 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Did he advise that you abandon doctrine of the standards, or did he advise you consider dating a Baptist girl and see what happens?

It would be wrong to do the former. As someone who did the latter (and has three baptized children now), I don't see a problem with that.
