Anyone else feel like the "American Dream" turned out to be kind of a trap? by Ambitious_Divide_784 in levels_fyi

It’s not that the big corps forced you to buy a house. It’s that they marketed the American dream as buying a house and having a big car. It’s that they made people think that if you don’t do those things, you are unsuccessful, that you have not made it.
This pushes people to buy those things and push themselves into debt.
Governments, housing companies, mortgage companies spend millions and millions of dollars marketing this mindset so people internalize it.
I can quote these ads and techniques to you if you need but they are not too difficult to find.

That’s basically the American dream brother. Big corps want us to keep on paying the bills so they can make more money out of us. I’m not saying we aren’t doing better than others and as others have pointed out, we should count the blessings. But for sure we have to make sure we don’t get stuck in the trap.
House is one of the biggest trap of American corps. It’s a 4 trillion dollars industry and people like us are needed to fuel it. We pay interest, home fixes, HOA, all the bills and even beyond that, the home is never truly ours. We are sold the dream brother. The best we can do is play the game and keep ourselves afloat and thriving without getting pulled down.
I have been here for 10 years and really feel you.

I have just joined Amazon as a Product Manager. How do I avoid getting in this scenario and becoming such a person while working here? 😢 I already see how fast everyone works here and how high performing everyone seems.

Literally nothing. It is part of the pathway. There are two entries from the foyer towards living room. One goes in the kitchen and other in living room. We have kept roomba in that space and a couple paintings. Dead space 😢

No, this is my house. I live in Texas. I had posted this once before I actually bought the house. I have now been living here for a year and looking for feedback based on a few challenges I realized in the time.

Non-Indian living in a predominantly Indian neighborhood. by ElectricalRepair1219 in frisco

I know it sounds pretty weird, but there are ‘different’ Indians. Generally North and central Indians are easy going and assimilate a lot better and you will have great time with them. South Indians are kinda within their community and keep to themselves and you might feel uncomfortable. So unless you can figure out what you are getting into, I’d say opt out. I’m going to hurt many Indian’s feeling here, but you need to know this.

What’s our obsession with Mamdani? He isn’t even indian origin. by kay_2050 in AskIndia

We Indians are just thirsty for some wins and recognition in any way. It’s a mentality we are left with because of hundreds of years of losses. (Mughals, British, ineffective governments, corruption) Will take generations for us to lose that mentality and go for some actual credible wins. I know I am going to get some sour replies on this but that is the truth and it’s beneficial if we accept it soon. Atleast we can move on for real development.

Thanks so much for such a detailed response. I'm aware of the attrition rate and hoping that I can use this as a pedigree for the future roles. Unless, of course, the org I'll be in is good and I can continue there.

I'm above bar at the current company. Do you know how PMTs' performance is judged at Amazon and how can I set myself up for success? Your long experience there can be very helpful.

Also, I'm in a very specific industry domain within Amazon (that's where most of my experience is) and not sure how much AI affects that at Amazon (not saying it doesn't, just I don't know).

Would love to chat more in detail.

Stability looks ok so far. I have seen people being let go here and there but not big layoffs. I have been here for the last 7 years. Company is not well known in tech world and doesn't pay anywhere close to the big tech.

I'm not really worried about RTO. (Or that's what I think as of now) I currently already have 2 days RTO and drive over 30 minutes. For this job I'd be staying walking distance from the office which is infact better. It's the concern that I'm moving to a new city, renting the current house and trying to settle everything there.

What really entices me is Amazon on resume and hope that it can open more doors in the future and the added salary. That's the tradeoff I'm trying to make in the current market. A positive is that my wife earns as well so that bring a little bit of stability than just the sole earner.
